- Basically I'm just going through a lot of NES games very quickly. I did most of the games from letter A-D. (I skipped sports games and games I have played in-depth already on stream) These are not really reviews, it's a joke. I'm just screwing around playing games. EPIC stream. now if anyone says to play/have you played “insert title” you can be like check out this stream haha
actually he did not play one of the best NES games ever in C letter, Crisis Force, what a plonker
@@agauerm he didn't play any Japanese Only games
@@TalonfromtheRC yeah, he could have played Lagrange Point too which is awesome, everdrive is able to play it already.
Some of those games were a real D to the A.
Over 5 hrs of this and the constant plays he's been doing, Mike is high on life, i envy him for that.
25:31 I love Mikes "Gilligan's island face" ^_^
Yes, finally a new good video to sleep to.
Yeah, probably one of the few Mike Matei vids you can sleep to. This dude has woken me up so many times from screaming "FUCK!" when he's actually trying to beat games lol
@@avagueblur That would be a good alarm sound.
I Feel the same way. I rewatch these videos all the time
Captain Skyhawk is one of my favourite games on NES and I really hope that you try the full game out for a James and Mike Monday or a play through. Quick tips: the bottom left is altitude. Also, if you hold down select and either left or right while flying in the blue stage and the red stage, you can do a barrel role to slow down the level. On the sea levels, fire the secondary weapon at the hard to hit plans to get a homing missile attack that can help get you more points towards an extra life. On the space dock stages, line up your plane directly with the middle of the turning platform. Finally, upgrade your cannon first. It’s a fairly difficult game, but it’s well worth it when you beat it!
I remember enjoying this game a lot! I revisited it, probably in my 20s, and got the hang of not crashing on the more overhead-view levels and figured out the controls for the different missiles, bombs, etc. Then it was a lot of fun and I finished it!
I remember a boss (maybe the end?) that was like a living space station with an eye/s, I think.
Having to enter your bases rotating dock was interesting, too, if at first a frustrating insta-kill. Good tips! 🙂
Yep, the last boss is that giant red space station with the giant eye in the middle. The two island levels were always my favourite! Great game though!
Mike: let me give you the low-down on 8-eyes... First off... you probably DO know how to play it, it's just bad. The controls are much stiffer than Castlevania, the feel of hitting enemies doesn't connect well... some bosses just don't follow patterns making them confusing.
In each level (region of the world) You're attempting to get to the boss to capture a Gem. Hidden within each level are 4 Health power-ups to increase your health bar, and a Hint scroll. After beating each boss, you get a new sword that is super effective against one of the other bosses (kind of like Mega Man) but weak against all the other bosses. Your sword is replaced with a new sword each time you beat a boss.
The trick is to us Cutrus the bird to strike at walls and platforms to look for powerups. Killing enemies will cause brown or white crosses to spawn... white crosses replenish are like Castlevania hearts, giving you ammo for sub-weapons, brown crosses replenish health. You may ALSO find "S" bottles which fully restore you, usually before a boss fight.
Switch puzzles are used in most levels, where you need to guide Cutrus to hit a switch while having Orin stand by a door.
One level in particular, Africa, is a horizontally repeating maze, and kind of sucks. Once you beat all 7 surrounding houses, you go to the middle one for a boss gauntlet and then fight the final boss. After you beat the final boss, you have a puzzle where you need to place all 8 Gems on a grid to beat the game... better hope you found ALL of the Hint scrolls mentioned above for where Gems are placed, otherwise you can't beat the game!
Beating the game gives you a password: TAXANTAXAN which unlocks hard mode
I struggled through it as a kid and beat it without a guide... don't bother with this game. I have HUGE nostalgia for it... but I just hate replaying it, lol
i wouldnt call it bad, it's not good either, it's in that "meh" zone to me, least somebody tried to make something different.

I don't have popcorn but I have dried mango! Thanks for all that you do for your community and the retro community Mike. Your streams and VOD's get me through the work day.
This is a GEM Mike, memories flowing through and through. Thank you
the look of pure pain while playing gilligans island 😂
"Hi, I'm an asshole because I play Color a Dinosaur all day."
*plays every nes game but that game all day
This is so entertaining, continue this! At the 01:23:46 mark, magic happens. Also at 3:26:30 - watch your speakers.
Your review on adventure island games...hit hard on me personally.
Great comedy Mike. I have watched you and James since the early days. Thanks for keeping us laughing throughout the years. Keep up the good work Sir!
@Michael Dulong lol
holly shit I almost died laughing on that bowling game xDDD
Skipped Dragon Spirit! Never seen you played that, Mike!
😂 Bump ‘n Jump has such comic gold to mine: the name itself, seizure-rific title screen, insane speeds of the vehicles (the SLOWEST your car can do is 80kph!!) where a produce truck is able to go faster than 240 kilometres per hour/149miles per hour, crazy-fast (more than Indycar?!) acceleration/braking , killer kale/cabbage/Christmas trees/whatever, a gi-normous woman at the finish line, etc.!
Looks like a legit fun game, too.
...
Also: “Crunk ‘N Drunk”. 😁
Thanks, Mike and all! I enjoyed this.
I've never seen anyone beat Deadly Towers, ever. Would be curious to see you play that one.
There have Been Speedruns and like the previous Commenter, it can be beaten. The Game has Too many variables that make it infamous.
I watch these over and over.thanks mike
I remember playing Black Bass at my grandpa's house as a kid. ah the memories.
Great game!
I remember playing with my grandpa’s big black bass as a kid. Ah the memories.
That was a good game
Both my Uncle and Step-Father were huge fishing fanatics when I was young and they rented that game and took over my NES for like the while weekend!
I didn’t play the NES BB but BOY, did I rent and play the scales out of Super Black Bass for SNES! Should’ve just bought it for the $ spent renting. I just liked it a lot. Good mems.
Loving these! This might be my favorite content on your channel... Really cool to see all of this stuff.
Its awesome to see you go over these games, you played a few i got as a gifts growing up, like Castelian. Man i put alot of time into it only to continually realize how crappy it was. Its funny to see the crappy games we put alot of time in as a kid.
To add on to Kevin O'Connell's post regarding 8 Eyes:
Another troll move the game pulls on you is that the level select icon starts on Arabia (you have to hit Select to change levels), which as far as I know is the hardest level, excluding the House Of Ruth. The easiest level to start with is Spain, and even that will wreck your shit if you aren't practiced.
The best way to kill bosses is to have the correct sword so you do double damage to them (and the only the time you ever get to change your sword is when you get a new one from a boss, so you'll really want to know the correct weakness order beforehand), and keep them stun locked with the white crystal sub-weapon while trying to sword them as much as possible.
The bayou Billy review is pure poetry
Which one came first? Bump and Jump or Autopia (racing game) in The Adventures of the Magic Kingdom? They’re very similar.
Bayou billy is such a good game, played the heck out of that one, it got everything, shooting parts, fighting parts, diagonal and horizontal action love it.
Would love to see this with other consoles! Love the vid =)
2:45:00 that music is incredible. masterclass. one of a kind
Did Mike try this with Sega Genesis or Master System? Now there's a few interesting ideas for Marathon Streams
3D-Worldrunner was in 3D with the glasses on NES, Mike. If you hit select, it will change to separated colors that the glasses would put together for a faux 3D effect.
How do I get this ever drive thing so I can play everything?
Buy the thing, put games in it,put it in your console, boom your playing!
Hey Mike, are you going to review or do any runs with any Sega Genesis games soon??
This makes me laugh and really helps me get through a stressful work day!
A little sad you didn't play Base Wars. I know it's a Baseball game, but you also get to fight to the death with robots.
Wtf
Yes! I liked that one! When you’d steal a base or other things, one of your robots would fight one of the other robots! Humanoid robots, Tank-body robots, (I think) Unicycle blade-wheel robots; maybe other kinds, could all make up your baseball team! Fun!
I’ve never been super into sports games, so not a lot to compare it to but this one had a solid, good feel to it, I recall.
thanks for doing this really interesting to hear your thoughts on all these titles
For Amagon, I believe it's "select" button that activates the power up mode after you collect that icon.
i should try it again sometime
@@mikematei for sure, it isn't a great game by any means, but I always had an interest in it and would rent it regularly as a kid.
oh shit!! Mike you took me back with that Dynowarz game. I completely forgot about that game. It was a guilty pleasure game i played as a kid. It wasn't great by any means but it was NES game, i didn't have many....5-8 games at any given time, so i pain stakingly played through. I wished you played a little more. The memories came flowing back. This why your channel rocks! It like a trip down memory lane everytime
I'm starting to think that Mike doesn't like Gilligans Island.
3D World Runner is a great game, I owned it back then and never beat it... gets extremely difficult. Honestly seems like your type of game if you give it a chance in that it requires practice, skill, and a bit of memorization. Also, you're supposed to hit the pipes for powerups.
He was way too critical on games that have aged so well.
I loved Cowboy Kid when I was younger. I never see anyone talk about it, it was nice seeing Mike play it for a bit.
His expressions and reactions on bad games is priceless 😂
1:39:47 "Hey there momma, I'm uh...busy now so uh, call me back there uh huh." Fuck, all you wanted was to cross space to call Elvis, wtf is LJN this lazy? Was he busy? Who knows but I know this, that clip of Yngwie during that bowling video made me laugh so hard I shook the room. You guys rock...also hope James is coming along with his guitar teachings.
Would really like to see Mike play the binding of issac afterbirth
He recently did a video on that game
Holy fucking shit... He NEVER played Captain Skyhawk before? That's an all time classic. It's tough. But once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. I even managed to beat it as a kid. Fuck the supply drop missions though. Docking with the space station is the best.
"Something better here, come on NES!" And that music starts.. Rocky and Bullwinkle xd
Heheh..... cruising along at 55 mph in Al Unser Jr Racing. No that was not the beginning of the level in Amagon, it's pretty distinguishable. Yeah i don't know what the hell that thing is in Athena either. LOL you were dead consistent every time in Championship Bowling, that's why you left those splits (and you picked 3 of them up)! I have to keep adding more to my comments as this goes on. This is pretty entertaining stuff
What happened to Anticipation and Arch Rivals?
Keep up the good work Mike! Really enjoy the content you and James put out.
2:40 Honestly not bad 3D graphics for the NES era.
if you press select, it switches to 3d mode, the visuals get fuzzy and you need to wear 3d glasses. that really ahead of its time
8 Eyes is a bit of a trick to play, but it has its high points, once you get into a level or two, or at least I remember it being like that, been ages since I last played it. An interesting live stream, so interesting to see all those games Mike. =^.^= Also, on Dragon Strike, you can hit the enemies on the ground, but you have to switch altitudes to do so, you aren't fighting on one level on the maps of the game, and you have two breath weapons, alongside claw attack for when you fly low over ground enemies, I found it to be a fair challenge of a game, those other AD&D games were very hit and miss, The Heroes of the Lance was particularly headache inspiring, Pool of Radiance made very little sense as well, took a ton of time to get through those two games. x_X
Abadox is hard as balls, but it's pretty awesome. There are some vertical scrolling levels later on. You just have to make sure you have full power-ups and not ever die.
arkista's ring is really fun, but it's short :) glad to see you didn't completely hate it
1:23:38 - Sly making an Athena Tree reference here? (1:03:42)
"If you have nothing going on for like 20 years, then you play this game." 🤣😂
Anyone know how he’s playing all these games? Is it a emulator?
using an everdrive cart
@@raabm5292 what exactly is an everdrive cart? Sorry for the dumb question.. is it like a cartridge with a lot of roms that you use in the NES?
@@wyredaftsquall Yep, it's a cart in which you put an SD card with ROMs on it, then play them on the actual hardware.
@@MosoKaiser that's cool
In Al Unser Jr, if you go into the sound test and look around, you'll eventually find a sound that says, "fuck".
Watchin' Mike's first TH-cam Premiere, starting live in 5 minutes. 30-second NES game reviews, with games starting from A-D.
Mike is the most obnoxius person on TH-cam and still I find myself coming back to view these videos. I bet my life savings that Mike was the kind of kid who screamed "F U mom, I'm FN playing!!!!!" when she told him "Dinner is ready honey".
BREAKTHRU was the first NES game I ever beat. Incredible memory! It took me all night into the morning but I did it haha!
What are you playing these games on as in system?
nes
Darkman was an ok movie and it would definitely help to see the movie to understand the game
What engine are you planning on?
on an actual nes with a cart loaded up with roms, no emulator
@@thepun3721 That's cool. Is there one for SNES as well?
@@graciegj63 yea, i they are called everdrive. a lot of classic systems have an everdrive, there isnt any games on them, u hafto load those up urself
@@thepun3721 Ok,thanks for the info. :)
this is awesome! keep it all comning dude!
Thanks...I had fun on this video..a true Stone Groove
Mike, Dragon Warrior (and as a series) is my personal favorite turn based RPG. Definitely recommend you give it a full playthrough.
Is this some rom collection on cartridge?
Dragon Warrior was a great game. I got it free with a subscription to Nintendo Power.
That honking in bigfoot was the most annoying thing ever. I wanted to find the nearest puppy and destroy it.
Come on man, Darkman is a cult classic from the 90's. It even had two sequels. I remember being a kid and my friends were so excited about this dark and gritty movie... that nowadays you can classify as expensive and really entertaining schlock. Sam Raimi directed it! Liam Neeson starred the first, and the sequels where starred by The Scorpion King himself. Pretty fun times.
8 Eyes is a off-brand Castlevania clone so I'm a bit surprised you didn't like it. I owned Captain Skyhawk and Demon Sword too, both decent games and very playable.
Air fortress is actually one of my top nes games, you should stream it mike, you'll really like it! :)
Mike u are awesome man, have u ever played startropics 1 and 2
2:23:55 WTF?
What happened with the steam?
I made it through all 5 hours. I hope you make more of these "30 sec" reviews going through the remainder of the alphabet.
1:33:55 hey Mike, is almost october (4 years later, but october xD)
Looking forward to the game's, Kings Knight, Little Nemo, and The Goonies 2 for Mikes long angry rants on these games.
@5:07:28 that’s the same exact dragon from Little Sampson😂
You doing an Amagon playthrough would be pretty awesome
AD&D Dragonstrike ain't bad, but ya definitely gotta know what you're doing to enjoy it lol
In the game World Runner you suppose to push select and put on 3D glasses I had the game in my childhood
Just in time hope everyone enjoys the show 👍
I loved the episode where you had G.G. Allin on.
Heyhon Puds that was probably one of the pay-per-view episodes with a strict rating on it for explicit material and graphic content. 👽
YOU SKIPPED CRYSTALIS! That's my favorite game on the NES
I streamed the entire game. I skipped some games i have entire playthroughs of
@@mikematei Oh snap! I need to watch the VOD for that stream then! Thanks for the reply!
I waited for the entire list to come out onto TH-cam..and now I have 20 hours to watch.
Love this idea. You look like you're in physical pain playing some the A games.
Alfred Chicken reminds me so much of the Bart bird from the Simpsons😂
Back to the future four, where they go back in time to stop the movie, and the entire movie slowly fades out the entire hour a la the picture of Marty’s family
So....I've found that going through the NES library is like looking for valuables at the city dump....you're going sift through a ton of $#!+ before you find something good or just worth while. XD
With Hydlide, at _least_ you heal up over time! At _least_ they did THAT right!
Or maybe that's jus-- I played it on an Emulator, so maybe that's just a hacked feature.
Omg I haven’t seen Captain Skyhawk in such a long time...
It's a good game
I remember having it and thinking it was good. It was nice that it switched from the more top-down levels to the behind-your-jet Afterburner ones (which I preferred).
It’s an amazing game! One of my favourites! Some tips, hold select and left or right to do a barrel roll on the blue and red stages to slow things down. Also, upgrade the cannon first. On the water levels with the hard to hit planes, use your secondary weapon to fire a homing missile. On the space stations, do not press left or right. Instead, gently tap up and down until you are perfectly lined up. This game may provide a challenge, but it’s worth playing for sure. You will definitely feel a sense of accomplishment when you beat it.
Danny Sullivan Indy Heat does look like a decent game. I mean, It's an Off-Road clone with pit stops, but it still seems like it controls well and could be a blast with 4 players using the Satellite/Four Score.
The Twin Towers appeared in alot of NES games.
Time Warp, John Doyle 2:59:44 😂🤣
Mike's reaction at 25:21 is priceless 🤣
I don't know which music was more painful gilligan's island or rad gravity lol
1:46:34 - Do they really say the f-word or was that just edited in?
That Tom Sawyer game looks like a cross between goodies and the carnival of Bart vs the world
Watched this live from the beginning to about the 3 hour, 45 minute mark. Now time to watch the rest.
demon sword is a quality game. fun strategizing with the items. definitely one you wanna get into
TH-cam you failed me again. I'm just now getting notified about this. Only 5 days old, the best part is the E through J episode came on time.
