started painting at age 75 - doing botanical but am interested in portraits. I have researched a number of artists and finally hit pay dirt "Alphonso Dunn". I am ordering your books and spending some time watching your videos til the books arrive. thank you. Jean Saccoccio

I have never drawn anything but stick figures and blobs. However, I am an avid art appreciator. I decided that I wanted to maybe get into something artistic just a a meditative, relaxing endeavor. I stumbled upon your channel by accident, and it is the best "accident" I have ever had. You have inspired me to get a drawing pad and just "experience". I have a strong science background, and although you are artistic, you are so methodical and analytical with your approach that it really resonates with you. You are a phenomenal instructor, and you make it seem so doable. I truly appreciate all the time and energy that you have taken to upload these videos. I can tell you LOVE what you do, and you are unselfish in your desire to teach practically. You are definitely making this Caribbean sister proud!!!

I'm not completely new to art, but I always love going back to the basics and you are an amazing artist, so knowledgeable and offer great techniques. Love how you simplify the process. Thank you👍👍👍 I am finally feeling more confident with proportions.

Alphonso, I've been working my way through your tutorials for the past 6 weeks and just wanted to say thanks for all of the hard work you've put into them. I've tried countless drawing tutorials in the past but never found anything that resonated with me the way your instruction has. Your a natural teacher, excellent communicator and an amazing artist. My drawing is improving dramatically, thank you so much!!

I must admit that I feel a but numb for discovering this channel only now... I have wasted months! :'D I am not a beginner when it comes to drawing, or drawing humans, but I have been struggling a lot because of inefficient practice methods (or at least the progress hasn't been as fast as I'd like). I have found plenty of good and valuable new ways to look into drawing humans especially through your channel, the progress has been pretty much instant. If I could afford, I would definitely buy your book. Don't take it off the market any time soon, I shall have it one day.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, vision and remarkable teaching skills with us here! ^^

Slant" for ear is new to me. He is simply uncommonly good at this drawing thing. I feel totally empowered by his instruction and the promise of advancement in an area of stagnation for me... decades of stagnation! I can tackle Loomis in early edition paperback with full confidence that I can stretch these lessons to drawing anything using his "Simple shapes method."

I have not drawn or painted since the early nineties. I became ill and handicapped and it was almost impossible for me to study and continue painting, I'm a firm believer that drawing and oil painting go hand in hand, you can't get better in one without getting better in the other.I am new to your You Tube site, and find it a true revelation , a real "ureka" moment. With your style and professionalism you have injected excitement and desire to continue my studies with you being the backbone of my endeavours. I want to Thank you very much and will follow you diligently.

With regards to what you said about knowing the standard head, *repetition is the key* to remembering the standard way of drawing a portrait.
Your idea reminded me of one of my late father's elementaty school students who he inspried. My father taught her this and she was able to do beautiful portraits. She even did some anime. All using the portrait drawing techniques you are showing in this video. Last I heard, around 2019 she was doing some outsourced artworks and was able to buy a drawing tablet to use to do her art works. She was I think, in grade 9 or grade 10 at that time.

Thanks for telling us this. I'm at a frustrating stage of my art journey where I'm seeing improvement but am still learning fundamentals, so I have so many ideas of what I'd like to draw, but don't feel capable or advanced enough to draw any of it, so I needed to be reminded that I should practice anyway. As always this video is everything I needed. I can't wait until you have full courses. I've been learning and bought courses from many very skilled artists and big names but I'm 100 certain one class with you would get me so much further than I am, because every one of these videos does.

For anyone scared to start having fun because of lack of skills:
I have kept myself from having fun with art to get the fundamentals down for about a year. I was studying so much and not doing what I liked, that i lost my passion for art, i forgot what I even liked to draw anymore and I burned out. Now, 7 months later, I'm finally slowly getting back into it and trying to let go of the pressure i put on myself to succeed. It's good to strive, but don't let it go too far like I did.
Don't take yourself too seriously and have fun :)

Love this series, is it continuing? I’d love to hear your take on 3/4 angle drawing!

Alphonso Dunn Really glad to hear that. I found your technique of building the face around the size and position of the eye much more engaging that many other guides that often focus on the head shape first, and I’m struggling with 3/4 angle drawing from imagination without a template of sorts to adhere to. Looking forward to your take on it!
