    If you're going to heat shrink the wires I suggest using a western union splice technique

    Thank you Jimmy. This is the point I've been at on my model railroad now for a few months. Now maybe I'll begin balasting and scenery now that theres a decent tutorial.

    I'm digging this video series. When you first referred to IPA at 7:02, i thought you were talking about beer. I never touch the stuff myself, but there are those around me that do.
    And, I'm very inspired to begin work on my first layout since my first failed attempt at the end of the last millennium. Thanks for this!

    I spent the first four weeks in basic training (US ARMY) with my helmet either taped on or doing lots of push-ups for my helmet coming off. Helped me lose weight doing all those exercises, mainly push-ups. I can laugh now. Start of 5th week I got a new helmet that fit.

    Lol, Sorry had to laugh at about 14:40 when you said wet water :). Water generally is wet. :)
    Great video series. Watching it 2 years later and enjoying it. The content is relevant still, no matter when it is watched.
    I have seen some people dilute the PVA in water for that top coat as well.
    For the electrical, I usually use the heatshrink that as solder inside it so it actually solders the connection inside the heatshrink

    Jimmy you are correct. Ballasting track sucks. But when done correctly adds so much to the scene

    Merry Christmas ..... Hats are important to those of us who have perfect heads ( bald) after having a spot removed years ago my Doc told me put a hat on because I dislike sun screen. I picked up some great tips enjoy your vids

    I have a big head just like yours. I don’t like hats and that is a good thing. I enjoyed watching you work through the challenges of adding ballast. You would think that some one would invent a ballast machine. Have a great holiday season. See you next year.

    Enjoyed the video but I was surprised you said nothing about ballasting the turnouts and points which is the trickiest part imo.

    • @DIYDigitalRailroad
      @DIYDigitalRailroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very very true. I only ballast the sides of kato turnouts, but I want to cover turnout ballasting in its own video because it's that tricky!

    I've used a cigarette lighter on heat shrink tubing more than once.

    Question about foam board usage. I'm in planning stages of a n scale layout. The foam board I'm thinking. 1" -2" thick board as my layout will have a narrow boat canal. The foam would allow me to carve the canal where I want it ? And does the foam, when glueing track and roadbed down, offer and sound deadening qualities???

    • @DIYDigitalRailroad
      @DIYDigitalRailroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Yes to both. I would draw your canal out with a sharpie and use a utility knife to cut it. Foam does a good job of deadening sound, especially when combined with cork roadbed and/or ballasting.

    Jimmy, Why do you use white glue(I assume Elmer's school) as opposed to Mod Podge that i have seen other TH-camrs use?

  • @bobsturgis4674
    @bobsturgis4674 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jimmy question,why not use the 50/50 glue water for the ballast? Enjoyable video,to you and your family and subscribers.Happy Holidays,and be safe.🚂🎋✌🌍

    • @DIYDigitalRailroad
      @DIYDigitalRailroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use the straight white glue to start because it doesn’t run. The 50/50 is used once I soak it with the wet water.

      I use woodland scenic spray glue so easy no mixing dries in about 24 hours

    Awesome video bro. Very informative.
    Isopropyl alcohol is difficult to find because of the chinese wuhan flu.
    Wet-water works okay for now... But takes forever to dry.
    Merry Christmas everyone!
