I'm glad you put this series together in one video! It is great to have a single video link to share with someone if they are looking for layout-building ideas or examples.
I love your project video, thank you! At 16:30 was it not possible to thread the wire with the track sleeves from underneath the board, so that you could keep the connector attached?
Just getting started in model railroading. After seeing this video, I’ve decided to make my first attempt a 2’ x 4’ layout to get my feet wet. Thanks, a lot of inspiration here.
So many years and I found it just this morning. But there's a slight error. I cant really imagine this thin pineboard to be 1 foot thick as your written measurement suggests ^^ not even 1" 🤣 .. Anyway keep up your fantastic work and those videos coming.
So great that u provide this info. I have a ton of new Lionel’s but just don’t have the room to do what I really want to do, so thanks to your show I went and ordered a kato stater set, blue bonnet Santa Fe. I remember u know people that would buy Lionel’s, if u could repeat their names would greatly appreciate, I live in Nashville area, TY!
Thank you for a really good video compilation aimed at first time model railway builders. I enjoyed watching and will be using some of the ideas for my OO guage analogue shunting yard that I am building.
Loved this projects and lean somthing new each time I watch it, for a fun project how about a 1x 4 or 5 ft n scale switching with kato track and full blown sceanery ,that would be great for us limited space guys, keep up the great work
Great video Jimmy. I'm an OO/HO modeller but I might just see if I can find space for this - one loco and some stock shouldn't break the bank. I'm also a big fan of longer videos which I watch whilst working, so this was right up my street. Thank you!
Thank you so much Jimmy for making this layout! You are my inspiration! I already made this if you remember from one of your coffee and trains episode. You are amazing!
Great compilation, Jimmy. I enjoyed this series the first time around, and it's still enjoyable. However, the DCC++ system you described 2+ years ago has, as you know, been superseded. You might consider providing links to your later videos in the comments, so new channel viewers won't be fooled by the very recent upload date.
for anyone who wants to do this layout but wants to use steam, I have comfortably used 2-8-0's on the same radius. You might struggle with anything bigger, I think you could realistically get a pacific or smaller onto it
Just a random thought that occured to me, why not use track "nails" or something else to secure the track, caulk seems a bit bad if something went wrong with the track; a section got torn up, warped, that kinda thing
As an addendum. for anyone who wants to do a bigger layout with Unitrak with ballast. I think I cracked the code by studying Japanese layouts. Simply don't ballast the centers. White glue along the sides avoiding the tops of the ties. Then spoon the ballast along the edges. Once dry a ballast color rattle canned or airbrushed onto the whole thing then painting the tracks and ties as normal with a brush. Shockingly looks better and is way faster than poking and prodding ballast in the shallow tie relief.
I thought this would be interesting to watch, learn from and get some new ideas for a small 1st layout. Instead, I'm I'm watching and enthusiast electronics video on DCC Train control. This was, I thought, an entry level 1st layout, This level of electronics and computers is WAY above the entry level person's interest and most likely capability. The time would have been better spent describing a few DCC systems and illustrating the difference between DC and DCC controls. FYI I am an I.T. professional and am very familiar with these concepts and terms, but the average Grandpa or maybe single parent is not. These people want to get something going for their train enthusiast child, not spending hours learning what to most, are advance computer and electronics terms and concepts. Yes you can just skip past this but why not follow the K.I.S.S. principal on a first layout video?
Why have most of the TH-cam started going to over a hour long. I have a life and have enjoyed your programs when they are around 20 minutes long. I watch maybe 10 different programs so if they go over 20 minutes than I will not watch. After 20 minutes most of the videos become boring and you almost need to put an IV of coffee in your body besides drinking it.
Watch time is more important than views on YT, so having some longer videos can help with your channel. Anyway, this was a series of short videos he put together so people who want to watch the whole series will have everything in one video and actually save some time since it is trimmed up to take less total time than watching the individual episodes. It is easier to watch the full build process this way. The shorter individual versions are still available on his channel page as well for those that want to watch the series that way.
This is a full compilation of the entire project. I will still be producing mostly shorter videos. These are for people who want to watch the entire project in one video.
@@DIYDigitalRailroad I setup a library so I can go back and watch. So far that works out. But to sit and try to watch anything longer than 20 minutes I get bored and fall asleep. Oh well, I will just bypass any videos over 20 minutes, I had to cut back on TH-cam like Sparky, bnsf5169 and a few more. Even outdoorgearreview has got so long. Than on top of it, the program starts to get very interesting and pop goes a commercial and you loose your train of thought, it gets frustrating.

This is exactly what I am looking for to get back into N Scale Railroading...at 63 years old.
Im one ahead of you and im doing that too
I wish I was this smart to do something like this.
I love your project video, thank you! At 16:30 was it not possible to thread the wire with the track sleeves from underneath the board, so that you could keep the connector attached?
That was very helpful to us newbies❤
What a helpful video, TYSM!
This is still probably my favorite layout build series on TH-cam. Succinct, insightful, and exceptionally well-presented.
Just getting started in model railroading. After seeing this video, I’ve decided to make my first attempt a 2’ x 4’ layout to get my feet wet. Thanks, a lot of inspiration here.
What an excellent video that can be applied to any scale

This series is what brought me to your channel - Good Memories 👍😀OperateOnOperator
weird.. I just completed watching all the individual videos yesterday =) thanks for all the great information

I’m planning on building a layout soon. This video is helped me see how to do it. Thank you :)
PLEASE BRING BACK YOU ETSY SHOP!!!
(Great video as always)
Excellent presentation; I'll be back!!!!
Have you ever found one combination of base green paint that works or looks the best on plywood as a base color to build up from?
I might be a little late but those Tamiya connectors can be taken apart to thread them through the base.
As much as I enjoy most aspects of your videos the highly technical computer part is absolutely baffling this old man.
hi there where can i purchase the large clumps that look like bushes on the hill from?cheers

What gauge was the main black and red bus wires?

Muito legal 😊❤. Amo a Norfolk Southern
What was the cost for this?
Do you use a 1k resister on all lights for buildings etc?
He said that in the video, yes.
👍👍Very nice!🚂🚂
Water and flour mix works wonders
Hi Philip here me and my girlfriend are doing my layout similar to yours but in 00 scale is that ok let me know I've got n scale train to.
what is the biggest loco you have run on this layout?
How did you do the 3d rendering at he start of the video?
Looks like scarm
@@ivovanzon164 Thanks yes not heard of that before :) Sad it's windows-only
For the road surface: ever tried Juweela road surface on roll? That uses miniature stones to create a realistic surface
So, at around 39 minutes, you say you wire the leds in series. Shouldn't they be in parallel?
Just a random thought that occured to me, why not use track "nails" or something else to secure the track, caulk seems a bit bad if something went wrong with the track; a section got torn up, warped, that kinda thing
Track nails don't work very well with form board. I use homosote which track nails are easy to install and will hold.

What are your resources for Japanese layouts?
Can I ask why you chose 1” foam as opposed to 1/2”? The 1/2” is cheaper but I wondered if there was a reason for the 1”. Great video!
I believe that homosote is the best and is mush better than foam boad. It is the quietest and can be screwed to the plywood.
Can you make a road by putting down either black tape or put down a different color tape then just paint it?
Tape wouldn't be a good idea because it will come up over time
I got a very easy technique for ballasting Kato
Great. Using power tools like a circular saw wearing sandals
Fun fact you can build multiple 2x4 sections and use them to create larger layout
I would lose it trying to figure out the electronics !
I would pay someone to make me one of these for a Ho train.
