Love your tip of lowering your own expectations and being patient. I'm a musician and nobody even thinks of becoming a pro musician overnight, yet as a photographer it's often overlooked that it takes practice, patience and rubbish to become good.

Sage advice Gary, I think trying to hard to emulate Ansell Adams, have not got a massive plate camera, use M4/3, bit of a diff! Plus, our landscape,s are a bit tame compared to the Rockies. Manual absoluteley on landscape, but on street say you need a semi auto mode say A, to capture the "moment".
One advice I always give, although many dont follow, is study technical aspects a lot and at home. The best way of eliminating technical concerns is dominating it. Once it happens you will think of creating and never more think about how to do. Break the rules if and only if you tried it first. Dont use breaking the rules as an excuse for mistakes. On the other hand, do not create artificial rules or concepts of good photos because someone is doing something you dont know how.

G’day Gary. I’m a 75 year old West Aussie, I’ve been learning photography for three years, I’m in a local photography Club with lots of great advice and help. This video is without doubt, the most OUTSTANDING tutorial that I’ve ever watched. Thank you for your honesty and your attitude without any apologies, Gary, I’m yours. Hang on Gary don’t go away. Gary in my day, it wasn't a rule and it was called "the theory of the intersection of thirds". People of my era didn't much bother with rules and when all is said and done, rules just make life more complicated. We did however put in all the work and practice and I burned mountains of film, most of it ending up in the bin. Many of the big names went through the same process. Today though, there are many more techniques available to the working photographer than we had and some marvellous images are produced. You have shewn us some stunning work Gary and I always enjoy watching your efforts in these videos. For me the transition to digital in 2016 was a very difficult process because the medium is so very different to film.
It's quite strange how people struggled with the transition to digital. Maybe it's because I was quite a techie person? As long as you're onboard now though :) Cheers John 👍👍
@@GaryGough It's because its a completely different medium Gary, film reacts to light differently and different films reproduced images differently to each other. The digital cameras don't react to light in the same way as film and the difficulty stems to that ingrained ability to know how a particular film is going to react to the prevailing conditions. Getting a sensor to record the scene as you want it to is extremely difficult and it requires a powerful computer and software to get that final image.

I'm a horsewoman , I'm 56 and have been riding etc since I was 5 and totally get what you are saying about not becoming good overnight. Great advice Gary, I've been photographing for about 7 years now and find still that every day is a school day . Always learning as every photo is a different photo regardless of whether I've been to the same location time and again.
#5 - find the bad things in your image - that struck a chord with me. I've always looked for the good things and then discovered the bad things after going back to process my images. Thank you!

Indeed, tips 7 & 8 are most important. I just told my University students this analogy with watching TH-cam videos yesterday. I told them that they don’t learn Chemistry from watching my recorded lecture but from going into the lab and doing it.

The one I liked best was to revisit a location when you are disappointed with an attempt. I had one instance very recently when I was shooting with an unfamiliar lens. I was using it incorrectly and some images were not pin sharp. I resolved to revisit the location and try again. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks gary , makes perfect sense , my biggest tip would be, make sure your lenses are clean. amount of times early on , my images were ruined by poor lens maintenance .Keep up the good work. Always enjoy your work.

Awesome video! I subscribed a few weeks back. I’m so glad I did. I am a late bloomer having picked up photography during the shutdown that also coincided with my retirement. I know I will never be a great photographer starting at 66, but I’m going to strive to keep getting better by learning and practicing every day. My wife has said my hobby has become my obsession. I am watching this tonight on the Tebay services near the Lake District and I’ve been on a three week road trip and I’ve just driven back from Glencoe after being at the Isle of Harris and on the skye and now ready for five days in the Lake District. I agree with every tip especially the manual mode ie, in Glencoe today in the shot three brackets two stops but because of the white water of the cascading river it was way over exposed so it was far easier for me to Andrew expose the shot 2/3 of the stop under as I know my Sony A7riii ( sorry Gary please do not shout at me as I moved from Canon ) could handle the dynamic range and bringing up the shadows as the two stops over was no use easier in manual for this moment keep up the good work Rob

Hi good vid, sound advice for beginners. I would add really starting to see lots of work from good photographers - visit salons, galleries, exhibitions. Look at what is deemed 'good' Vs what you like and try to understand what and where differences are. Then learn to deconstruct an image that you really like to better understand how it was constructed. Then practice and practice some more. Eventually bring it all together and try to pre-design your 'ideal' image in your head before selecting the best background, subject/model, lighting, viewpoint, as well as the many tech elements that you now understand will help you deliver your desired concept. But do understand that like any life skill it takes time and it's not mostly about kit. I have been a photographer for 40 years and recognise one never stops learning.

I don’t even know how to shoot in aperture priority! Manual is so much easier to me. Many of my photography friends shoot AP and I felt like I should too, that I was missing something, but it makes me crazy. I wanted to tweak settings all the time. Manual all the way 👏👌

Agree totally re the semi-auto for street. I tend to lean towards shutter speed priority though 👍👍

The MTL5 bought in a kit from littlewoods catalogue 1978. Set me off too..though not to your dizzy heights.
