Alan Wake would definitely be interpreted as a mage in the process of awakening in the WoD. American's Nightmare could represent him experiencing a quiet. I haven't played the second one so I don't know. I don't feel like Jesse from Control would be a mage, I would interpret her as someone possessed by a spirit of either the Weaver or the Wyld, although I think the latter is more likely.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is actually just the result of a major failure by the Technocracy, with the angels being something that broke through the front lines and warped consensus to the point were mechs were (mostly) paradox free. Shinji is a mage undergoing awakening inside a collective Technocratic project to "fix" consensus.
Polaris might be a Gaian spirit ( or a spirit of the Gaia analog from its dimension) making her a Kami at the start of the game, but the board is obviously a weaver-spawned incarna. The clarification process likely couldn’t be completed due to the tactical necessity of leaving Polaris intact (to counteract the hiss) leading to much more free will than normal. I think the bureau of control is sort of a weaver version of Pentex, having started as a mortal organization before being co-opted by the weaver. OOPs are likely fetishes.
In Trepang2 you are an enlightened citizen or a Hit Mark based on how much ridiculous shit happens in that game and how powerful you are for whats supposedly just a guy with a gun.
There is a moment in the show where Hannibal could have preformed rhapsody and that is the episode where an artist serial killer is trying to create a grand piece of art where he has sewn the corpses of his victims in a manner where the tones of their skin makes an eye but he is unable to finish the work for multiple reasons until Hannibal gives him “inspiration” to become one with his work and helps the “artist” by sewing him in the center of the eye acting as the glint in The Eye of God.
Couldn't it be argued that Hannibal's grooming of Will could be a toe into Rhapsody? Turning a mage into a killer, changing reality into a killing field, wouldn't that be a magnum opus? The power that would take could certainly burn Will out forever and Hannibal would never be hungry again.
Ever since I saw his video about vampire I was curious but when he went with mages and changelings I think he may have passed along those brainworms :P
You too? I watched all his lore videos but I've never played a table-top RPG and found his content accidentally. I love listening to people talk about subjects they love.
Finally, someone with my same genre of brain worms. Not around Hannibal specifically. Just around seeing WoD (and all kinds of other properties) potential in every piece of media I’ve ever consumed. Crossover brain.
Okay so the "will is a mage" part of the video is by far the best explanation of mages and enlightend scientists ive herd and explanse how enlightend scientists can do ther magic without seeing it as magic wiach was a bit hard to grasp for me for a while :3
This video finally drew me into a World of Darkness thing by appealing to my inner Hannibal fan and goddamn I have been MISSING OUT this shit is dope and I would absolutely LOVE more deep dives into 'unrelated' media that can be explained via WoD
Broke: "hey guys this is my slasher chronicle dont read too deeply into Mandible Vector and Bill Mayhem." Bespoke: "DING DONG REALITY POLICE OPEN UP!!"
As someone who also compulsively compares things to WoD lore, the first minute of this video makes me feel so seen. Hopefully not by the eldritch eye, but, I take what I can get.
11:41 the Technocracy didn't as a whole so much dislike the theory as they "disproved" it. I mean, it did work, devices based on etheric science functioned because their makers believed they would. But the Technocracy decided that ether wasn't consensus viable because it had been in the cultural zeitgeist for centuries but still hadn't become part of consensus. They demonstrated this by performing an ether "experiment" in front of sleeper scientists to see if it would work, and the fact that it didn't proved that even after centuries in the public eye, ether was too far-fetched and adjacent to superstition to enter consensus and so they would stop pushing it. To sleepers, this looked like an experiment that disproved the existence of ether.

Oh, oh I hate that. One of the most important scientific experiments in the history of science reduced to a conspiracy? Fuck that. I hate how anti science WoD has been at times. If magic existed, scientists wouldn't be denying it, they'd be studying it, working out its laws and coming up with theories of the nature magic.
Yeah, I think I love this content that can be defined as “Seeing supernatural stuff in shows where lots of things shouldn't work the way they do, but WoD magick gives it a kind of explanation if you see characters as Splats”!
@OrmylLP That's only a small part of Demon, and depending on the backstory, Lillith and Lucifer are big players as to why the world became what it eventually becomes. And even then, most demons don't even know that the Morningstar is on earth, just sure as hell he wasn't with them in the Abyss. Though, I'm not opposed to seeing his explanation of the different Mage Crafts. Cause even with his videos on the Traditions and Technocracy, there's still a ton of Mage content that it would still feel like scratching the surface (but Demon is the last of the main gamelines of WoD he hasn't done a video on yet)
As a long-time WoD fan who loves Mage lore and adored your Changeling video (and who immensely enjoyed Hannibal during its Air-years), I have to say this is a masterclass in lore application.
For a long time, I was the DM for a horror D&D game where the players were all teens in a school "ghost hunting" club where they learn that their small town is host to a number of paranormal terrors and I love applying new WoD lore I learn to the canon I set up back then. A couple of the kids' parents turned out to be members of secret government organization called the Magical Suppression Bureau who would basically find anyone any time that they discovered how to do magic and either recruit them or (if uncooperative) kill them. There's a view of them in a WoD context as this sort of mage conversion tool of the technocracy. See, they teach that magic is just another area of advanced physics, just some area of the tech tree we decided we shouldn't put points in to. "I know that you think you're casting a spell using your soul's power of will but it's actually just a simple application of Rune Theory. Faith healing? No, no, that's the Magic of Light and Ice, an entirely scientifically explainable phenomenon that the Catholic Church believes was taught to them by God."
Let’s not forget Horror movie characters as WoD Archetypes. Freddy Kruger is a Specter, Micheal Myers is a rogue Hunter aka a Slasher, Chuckie is a mage who put his soul in a Doll
thank you for keeping hanibal in the zeitgeist there is literally nothing tv show wise i want more than to see will and hannibal go at it one more time

I haven't seen the show, but my girlfriend (who introduced me to WoD) has and it was quite enjoyable to watch through this with her interjecting with explanations of all the plot you were referring too and her takes on the motives of supernatural orgs and such.
I would never in a million years have thought to ask for this video, but I greatly enjoyed it and would love to see more like it if inspiration strikes in the future!

If you're looking for other media that can slot perfectly into WoD, Person of Interest is an excellent choice. It would be spoilers to explain every way it slots in, but from the premise, it's basically a crime procedural where a Virtual Adept and a Euthanatoi get a vague target every week to save from or prevent from committing a major crime. The gimmick being that they're just given the target, not whether they're a victim or perpetrator. But it swiftly gets more conspiracy and cyberpunk than that.

o.o .... Okay, I've barely even started this, and I have no idea what you're talking about, but Mikelsen's Hannibal Lecter as some kind of Fae lord changling is the actually _extremely_ fitting, nightmarish-yet-fascinating concept that I never knew I needed to think about. _Tell me more_ 😂 **gets the popcorn**
Changeling is one of the more difficult settings in World of Darkness to comprehend xD I have been into WoD for quite a while and I still don't really get it, Vampires and Werewolves are much more understandable xD However, from what I can understand, this video is entirely accurate to the setting. Quite an easy introduction even, as it explains concepts of Changelings with easy to understand examples!
I don't know much about Hannibal, so I checked the wiki for some of the character talked about here. The second line about Abigail is literally "She is a skilled hunter and has a knack for manipulation, much like Hannibal. ". It writes itself!
Okay Burg. Just so you know. I love the show Hannibal, and this might have been the most interesting thing I have ever listened to, and I have listened quite a few times here. This was so intriguing.
I as a vampire, our coterie needed help taking out a Nephandi, our choices of seeking help were The Celestial Chorus or the Cult of Ecstasy. We went to the cult, we came to the conclusion that they wouldn't try and evaporate us on sight, luckily we chose right.
I know next to nothing about Hannibal or World of Darkness, yet I found this video very intriguing. It goes to show how good Burger is at explaining and extrapolating different media into this strange, but 'makes sense' sort of head-canon mashup
I actually have played Hannibal in a world of darkness (revised) game. Though mine is based on the mostly on the movies (Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and some ideas in Hannibal) and a bit of the info on the books (mostly what is mentioned about his past). That being said I didn't have him as a changeling instead he was an Old Clan Tzimisce and a Koldune. I also played him in Vampire the Requiem as a Spina. This being said I am also bringing him back in another VtM revised game I am presently in again as an Old Clan Tzimisce. If you are wondering why this clan Lithuania in World of Darkness is hot bed not only for both kinds of Tzimisce but also Koldunic Sorcery.
I sometimes get (pathetically) incredibly frustrated with analyses of the tv show Hannibal, especially when they take a (in my opinion) far too literal and--to borrow from this video somewhat--BANAL way of viewing things, essentially ignoring & stripping off the flesh of all that trippy-ness, style, & artistry from the series, and leaving behind the bones of what is a pretty boring police procedural in their wake. Fortunately, every once in a while, there comes along an absolutely gloriously batshit interpretation like this to help restore my faith and hope in humanity lol. Seriously tho, this is a god tier take and I fucking love it 👻
1:01:49 Twin Peaks, Fire Walk With Me, and The Return ☕️🥧🌲 All of these, to me, are extremely world of darkness. The original run of the show even aired during the early era of WoD.
Okay, joined late so I'll rewatch now! However, let me also repeat my reccomendation from the end of the chat! Johann Liebert, from Naoki Urasawa's Monster. GREAT Thriller series, even if you aren't usually into anime. Unique style, great story, and it plays in Germany!
Funny story, after warch this video i went to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. As i was watching it, I started comparing the Beetlejuice franchise to Wrath the Oblivion. The Beetlejuice franchise suddenly make a lot of sense when you see the parallels. Beetlejuice is literally running an illegal Guild. The reason he gets away with it is because he is unofficially protected by the Grim Legion
Can’t wait to watch this as it’s about one of my favorite TV shows of all time. Haven’t been watching you lately but glad to see you touching on a topic of interest for once.
oh i adored this!!! huge hannibal fan and huge wod fan as well, so this was such a treat! i'd so be down for more in this vein. it's honestly a really cool practical application of the wod too for those of us who haven't played games in all of the various wod ips, so i feel like this helps bolster my understanding of how they all could come together into a complete World in ways focusing on just one doesn't quite meet.
I knew MtA existed, but seeing this video I am reminded of Dirk Gently's BBC America series, the second and sadly last season. I won't risk spoiling any of it but I encourage you to see it (again) with some WoD lore in the back of your head, man what a treat! You can almost feel the Technocracy being summoned into existence
i also have a tendency to do the weird crossover things with media i like, for example one could argue that the persona series (maybe even mainline smt, idk) is also part of the world of darkness, specifically mage. the personas are their avatars and the series as a whole has themes of human cognition. hell, in persona 5 the whole world of mementos may as well be concensus itself. the weapons you buy in that game are just replicas but in the world of mementos theyre fully functional because people believe theyre real.
You convinced me of Hannibal as a possible True Fae or a very powerful and very messed up changeling. But I’m still convinced Will is more a Hunter than a Mage, especially if he was a part of the VASCU with the “Teleinformatics” endowment to review crime scenes and interview Slashers.
This was a very fascinating video! I loved the way you worked in the little hints of lore explanations; it made things much more digestible than the deep dives (which are also fantastic, don't get me wrong, but the density can make them difficult for people just starting out). This is the kind of thing I might send to someone who was only a little curious about the World of Darkness, and wasn't (yet) ready for one of the deeper videos.
Man I haven’t looked into any world of darkness in quite a while but I LOVE Hannibal and so this video has crossly inspired me to dive back into both of these things
I love this video, the reframing of the Hannibal series as genuinely supernatural is very interesting, the history of the Technocracy and the profiling of characters in the grander lore of WoD is fascinating, but I do have to note: Wow these TV Show characters REALLY fit these Fey Archetypes that are based on Story Character Archetypes. Almost as if these TV Show characters were based on Story Character Archetypes!
Just got up to the Francis Dolarhyde section, and yes there is a canon dragon kith, found in the book "Kiths of Arcadia", for C20. The Dragonkin are changelings originally formed from the pre-human dreams of the dinosaurs and the WoD race of the Dragon Kings (or Lizard Kings if you wish to be boring). The Dragonkin obsess over their hoards, their revelry is to spend a night sleeping, or an equivalent amount of time resting during the day, atop or surrounded by their hoard, very much in the same vein as Smaug in the Hobbit. Their frailty is linked to this, as if the hoard is ever burglarised, the Dragonkin must pass a Willpower roll (Difficulty 7 for a mundane item, 9 for a Treasure) in order to not go into a blind fury and reduce their equivalent to Esgaroth to steaming rubble. The Dragonkin also has a far greater memory than other Fae, gaining an extra dot of Remembrance for free, and being unable to botch rolls for Enigmas or Gremayre. As dragons take many forms, so too do the Dragonkin, gaining 5 chimera points towards certain extra abilities or features you can find in folkloric dragons. Francis Dolarhyde's particular hoard may be artwork but being utterly twisted, instead of just keeping the artwork, he consumes the pieces, not just to gain Glamour, but to ensure the hoard is always with him, as it is now a part of him. He can't perform the Dragonkin's unique Revelry like this, but he never needs to suffer from his Frailty either; thieves cannot steal what he has already eaten.
would you ever consider looking into Pathologic? Because Artemy from there could be a number of things, and Daniil is very clearly a mage that got thrown out of the Technocracy/a hunter on the verge of awakening (Clara is probably a changeling, pooka probably)
Had to actually watch the show before I watched this. Absolutely loved it. Would 100% like to see more of the different series that can be interpreted as WoD. Also, my brain got very twisted seeing Burger wearing the Cumtown shirt. I miss that pod a lot.
This was a blast. I had a decent helping of the WoD brainworms warping my interpretation of films and shows when I started playing NWoD back in college so I greatly enjoyed this.
When I saw the length of this video I thought, "maybe Burger is taking it easy"... But, DEAR LORD, this video is a dense and fascinating look at a piece of media through a most interesting lens. PLEASE, do Demon next. Or another video like this where you take something with a slight fantastical bent and really put it through the WoD lens.

Seriously tho, this is a god tier take and I fucking love it 👻
I would watch a 12 hour video of this, need more Hannibal content from our boy 🙏
Damn the weavers got you good, now you can never escape the patterns in the air
You know it’s gonna be good when he busts out the whiteboard
1:01:49 Twin Peaks, Fire Walk With Me, and The Return ☕️🥧🌲 All of these, to me, are extremely world of darkness. The original run of the show even aired during the early era of WoD.
I fully agree, those mfs seemed like some novel type of fae
Yes exactly. I'd love to hear Burger's translation of Twin Peaks. Thank you for reminding me.
Oh yeah, Johann is definitely something.
Who knows what, but not human.
You spread a generous amount of glamour with these videos Burger, thank you so much x
This was my favourite fan theorying nonsense 10/10, no notes, just make more of this 😂
This was a blast and really put a cool spin in a show that was already fantastic. I might do a rewatch through this new lens. Thanks, Burger.
Can’t wait to watch this as it’s about one of my favorite TV shows of all time. Haven’t been watching you lately but glad to see you touching on a topic of interest for once.
My boy Gwydion on camera looking aggressively bisexual
This was fantastic.. Using WOD as a lens to view other media is probably my perfect YT vid.
This was such a fun little thought experiment. I would love to see more of it.
oh i adored this!!! huge hannibal fan and huge wod fan as well, so this was such a treat! i'd so be down for more in this vein. it's honestly a really cool practical application of the wod too for those of us who haven't played games in all of the various wod ips, so i feel like this helps bolster my understanding of how they all could come together into a complete World in ways focusing on just one doesn't quite meet.
I'm so glad that other folk also do this type of thought experiment.
great video! i allways saw show hannibal as a malkavian but i dont have much knowledge of changelings and your arguments make lots of sense
He is far too lucid for a Malk.
Will, he is definitely more insane, but with Hannibal? It's pure, ruthless calculation.
0:41 no, No Burger i do that too.
I knew MtA existed, but seeing this video I am reminded of Dirk Gently's BBC America series, the second and sadly last season. I won't risk spoiling any of it but I encourage you to see it (again) with some WoD lore in the back of your head, man what a treat!
You can almost feel the Technocracy being summoned into existence
thank you for the sidebar for us hannibal fans we are very happy to be here
i also have a tendency to do the weird crossover things with media i like, for example one could argue that the persona series (maybe even mainline smt, idk) is also part of the world of darkness, specifically mage. the personas are their avatars and the series as a whole has themes of human cognition. hell, in persona 5 the whole world of mementos may as well be concensus itself. the weapons you buy in that game are just replicas but in the world of mementos theyre fully functional because people believe theyre real.
You convinced me of Hannibal as a possible True Fae or a very powerful and very messed up changeling. But I’m still convinced Will is more a Hunter than a Mage, especially if he was a part of the VASCU with the “Teleinformatics” endowment to review crime scenes and interview Slashers.
Owod V. Chronicles of Darkness (the latter is certainly my preference, but this video is about the former)
There is a show called Evil that I think you would enjoy but it would probably be alot easier to label but still enjoyable to see what you think.
We so need more of this, it fills me with glamor
Gotta thank this video for causing me to binge the entirety of Hannibal. I am now rewatching it, and I understand it significantly better.
This was a very fascinating video! I loved the way you worked in the little hints of lore explanations; it made things much more digestible than the deep dives (which are also fantastic, don't get me wrong, but the density can make them difficult for people just starting out). This is the kind of thing I might send to someone who was only a little curious about the World of Darkness, and wasn't (yet) ready for one of the deeper videos.
very fun :D now going to watch the rest of this channel.
Man I love your videos keep up the great work
As someone who doesn't know anything about WoD I am on board and completely sold.
No but genuinely, that was very intricate and detailed!
Man I haven’t looked into any world of darkness in quite a while but I LOVE Hannibal and so this video has crossly inspired me to dive back into both of these things
This is the first of your videos I've ever seen and I adore it
I love it! This is the exact conversation i have with my friends all the time. I would love to see more.
Have you ever heard of the book night circus before, I read it not too long ago and the magic in it lines up perfectly with mage
When I saw this title I thought he was gonna be talking about "Kindred the embraced."
I did see that show though I have it on DVD
@@TheBurgerkrieg Think it would be interesting to do an analysis?
appreciated this, gives me a way to actually apply all this lore i've learned. like a framework. also was fun to watch.
This was so fun, I’d love to see more stuff along these lines. Honestly GREAT inspiration for a chronicle lol
I selfishly wish you did more like this World of Darkness media translation. I have listened to this a ridiculous amount of times.
This made me watch Hannibal! Thank you sir!
Fascinating.
Now do it in the context of Shadowrun. 😏
Will is a unconscious adept, Hannibal just has some variant of HMVV
I love this, actually. I would be down for more, even if other shows don't fit as well. You made me want to revisit Hannibal.
I love this video, the reframing of the Hannibal series as genuinely supernatural is very interesting, the history of the Technocracy and the profiling of characters in the grander lore of WoD is fascinating, but I do have to note:
Wow these TV Show characters REALLY fit these Fey Archetypes that are based on Story Character Archetypes. Almost as if these TV Show characters were based on Story Character Archetypes!
You have finally convinced me to watch this show.
That was such a fun video, I was only vaguely aware of vampire the masquerade and its assorted spin off games. But this makes so much sense
Thanks Burger :) SO much of this fits perfectly. Would be interested in seeing more media analyzed for WODness
Very cool video, it's interesting to see this kind of strange theory that recontextualizes an entire show.
Aaaah!!!! ❤❤❤ I love both WoD and NBCs Hannibal. I'm so excited for this video
This show was and still is great.
would you ever consider looking into Pathologic? Because Artemy from there could be a number of things, and Daniil is very clearly a mage that got thrown out of the Technocracy/a hunter on the verge of awakening (Clara is probably a changeling, pooka probably)
I was hesitant but I absolutely adore this video!
OK I'm actually sold
Pretty interesting vid! Was a neat way to concept game rules/lore into these examples. Also I guess I need to watch Hannibal now :P
Absolutely loved this video. Would love to see more things in this format.
Really enjoyed this video and would love to see more like this. It's inspired me to rematch the Hannibal series.
