Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Painting The HasLab Razor Crest!

  • Adam and Norm examine the HasLab Razor Crest playset and spend the day experimenting with different types of paint finishing to add extra layers of detail to this beautiful model. From adding brown rust to a random selection of panels to specular highlighting, we turn The Mandalorian's ship into a canvas for freeform weathering using our favorite paints. Here's how even a little bit of work can transform plastic into battle-worn steel or carbonite. This is just the beginning of our fun with this model!

    I love the design of this ship. It's one of my favorite ships from any franchise. I hate to say it, but it's neck and neck with the falcon at this point. And, that has to be one of the best sculpts for a toy I've ever seen. That's the ship I want to fly around in. Park it and camp out somewhere for a while. It's like they looked at the ship from Space Balls and said, _Ya know what? They were kind of on to something there with the flying space Winnebago. Let's show 'em what that would actually look like, but, let's make it an AirStream._

    Another fun thing to do when you have old-looking decals on something that's paneled like this one, is to paint over the decal on one of the panels with a shinier "newer" looking colour. That makes it look as though that panel has been replaced recently but nobody went to the effort of repainting the design that used to be there.

    The shot with Adam using the rub and buff on the engine interior is just spectacular. To see a well painted toy turn into a really well painted toy, in seconds, and that’s before the wash and rust. And the confidence he has to just do it all at the same time. I would take a day to just do that one part.

    Adam, I might have missed it, but did you talk about going down the rabbit hole on a project like this?
    At what point do you have to step back and say, thats enough? I have always had a major problem with that.
    Another thing a lot of people forget about toys/models like this. We only get to know one version of this ship. It is not a one of a kind "in universe" The shipyard would have built many of this class of ship and all of them will have weathered differently. Imagine this ship having been owned by Sabine during Star Wars Rebels, and how she would have painted it.
    During the prequels I always wanted to see more of the ships we knew. Seeing the falcon when she was shiny and new was neat, but seeing a squadron of them flying into a battle to help out would have been awesome. (Yes, I know its a freighter, not a fighter)

    Drybrushing should be decreasing pressure with every wash that is mixed more in the highlight color. First pass: heavy pressure 40% highlight color. Second pass: medium pressure: 60% highlight color, Third pass: light pressure: 80% highlight color. Even Adam isn’t doing it right all the time. It isn’t just 1 pass

    Adam in the future you might want to try taping off areas with a soft edged tape. You can buy them or you can roll the edge of regular masking tape to achieve the same result. That model from hasbro is truly incredible for a mass market item. We are truly living in the golden age for prop replicas and scaled models thanks to all the independent makers and now hasbro. Calling items like that ship merely toys would be a massive misunderstanding of what they have achieved here.

      @ARFF1Tampa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can easily just use a straight edge (old credit card, ect.) and airbrush most of the panels by hand without even taping most of them off.

    Using a high gloss black as a base really brings out the Spaz Stix chrome.

  • @ronzufelt1428

    Awesome weathering. Spas stix chrome looks a lot more chrome over gloss black. Then buff it when dry.

    • @Ryotsu2112
      @Ryotsu2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I don't know if he was going for a super mirror chrome look, but you can get that using the Spaz Stix backer paint as well (it's a really high gloss black). Once you spray the chrome over that, it just accents the already mirror gloss in the black with great results (for those that don't know).

    Norm, you couldn’t have picked a better partner in crime to throw down some custom love on your Haslab RazorCrest... So many RazorCrest owners wouldn’t dare customize their brand new Haslab project... BUT of course, they don’t have Adam Savage as a buddy neither....Great video. Love watching the two of you brainstorm and immediately go to town on that beautiful piece of plastic goodness.Thanks for that & ☮️

    Great work!!! love watching your tutorials . Have you considered adding dings and dents with scorch marks on them? I used to add them to fronts of tanks and war machines as anything used has the straight angles nicked and battered,. I used techniques such as mini drills to make billet holes as well as hot tools to melt and distort surfaces. Thanks again for the videos

    Adam. You and Jamie were absolutely great to your fans. I remember when Jamie gave my son and I a tour of M5 Industries during a 2 week break in filming because Discovery Channel's insurance couldn't allow it and we'll never forget it. Jamie even took us upstairs. My son still has your green postcard signed in silver ink. I was quite proud of locating M7 before they put the gate in. The big yellow sea crate for all your explosive testing. RIP Grant.

    It's kind of amazing how intentional the colors inside the engine look after after a seemingly random application of different finishes.

    I wouldn't have dared to touch such an expensive toy myself, but it was interesting to see what all those techniques can do to a model.

    • @ARFF1Tampa
      @ARFF1Tampa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if you were going to keep it and display it, you can easily make it much better. The legs aren't even fully painted. And, the bigger the model, the easier it is to do. Like when building car models, I like to think of it like "I'm building a complete model of an engine". Not "I'm just building the engine part of a model".

    How realistic is it that a space ship would be made with a material that could rust? One of my minor annoyances with some scifi. Have fun guys It does look great. =)

    • @3v3rb0t
      @3v3rb0t 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look at shuttle boosters. Sometimes the cost isn't worth it to paint or go in and finish. Working with stock metal, the shit rusts instantly before you even get it delivered. Then going in and trying to sand. You might clean it up and coat it, but it's not unrealistic.
