    What do you think is the most important part of the drum set? The kick or the snare?

    • @tottemusik

      The "kick" lays the foundation together with the bass

    Kicks provide the core pulse of a groove whatever genres and need to fit to the bass effectively - as you show us how to do so well. Snares depend more on genre. I prefer lighter skip snares that fit into the overall rhythm rather than stand out as an 80s crack!
    Great videos so clear and well paced. I do notice you sometimes use plug-ins not in Logic. Appreciate, if possible, to indicate Logic alternatives. I am new to Logic so trying not to get into 3rd party plug-ins at the moment!

    Just my opinion. If you are EQing bass for an gospel or RnB track probably playing a 5 String, you would sure need to allocate some lower frequencies specially if the track as lower notes on the low B string like open B, C, E or their halftones.

    Great video. Everyone should watch it. But it bothers me that people aren't learning to mix through experience.
    One question. Why are you bottoming out the low end in both the kick and bass? Might make sense for an electric 4 string but certainly not an electric 5 string with it's fundamental notes going all the way down to 31 hz.
    Keep in mind real acoustic instruments will have lower and upper harmonics. To fall guilty to high pass madness. On a real acoustic kick the upper harmonics (go up to 2 khz) would push through your mix.
    Anyway great video. Being doing this for years. I can tell you it works very well but don't over do it. In other words no more than 4 db cut or boost. I would stick with 3 db.

      I do this all the time. But I figured it how to do it myself years ago. I wish the damn video had been around 10 years ago. I was doing pro mixes for big labels and mixing the kick and bass was pain in the ass. Eventually I came up with The Fat Man's Double Notch. But I was told later pros have been doing this since the 70's. As soon as fully parametric 3 band EQ came out it was real easy. Now you want fun and challenge. Try this on 1963 tube Ampex 7 band graphic equalizer. Good luck!

    Hi, on the whole I like your videos and find them interesting but please, please do not encourage people ( especially newbies) to mix with their eyes. The ears are all that really count. When I went to school ( a long time ago now) we were taught that we see with our eyes and hear with our ears.
    I was once working with a student who told me she could never hear the eq, after watching her try to eq (something) I realised she was trying to hear with her eyes. I told her to put her hand on the eq and close her eyes. Suddenly she could hear the changes in the eq. We tend to be visual animals and need to learn to listen properly before anything else. The modern graphical interfaces on everything do not help new engineers learn.
    Sorry if this seems a bit like an old fart rant but I just wanted to make the point.
    P.S. keep up the good work though and thanks.

      This is so true. I think a turning point in my engineering life was about a year ago when I listened to music on mushrooms trying to hear the individual frequency ranges. That alone gave me the single biggest jump in improvement I’ve had so far

    Cowbell. Always the cowbell. You can never have too much cowbell in any genre. Even ambient and choral. If Bach had used a cowbell in his B Minor mass it would be far more popular. Having said that, maybe the Kick/snare are the most important? Maybe its genre specific?

    • @masteringcom

    Can you explain how to decide whether to use sidechain compression on the bass using the kick as the input key vs. the space allocation method you are demonstrating here?

    • @thr3way
      @thr3way 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i‘d say u should generally always create space for the other instruments or in thid case the bass. i normally sidechain the sound i want to stand out more than it does after i‘ve eqd it. i‘m no professional tho

    • @hammincheese1310
      @hammincheese1310 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thr3way ok thanks. Yeah I think it makes sense to EQ slot whenever possible because it's then part of the static mix and doing as much as possible in the static mix is a good thing. After further consideration I think that ducking is more a stylistic choice. I have messed around with it a bit since posting here and it tends to be too noticeable (i.e. pumping) for my taste (my stuff is not pop/dance genre). I guess I would need to be more subtle with the amount of compression to rectify that.

    how to know about where freq must boost on Rbass?

  • @AudioReplica2023
    @AudioReplica2023 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I figured out its everything about arrangement. Learn how to pick the correct kick and bass sound will save you a lot of time and head aches when mixing.And Sir...that Rbass is a secret weapon ...LOL. That little plugin works wonders on low end. A lot of people reach for saturation plugins but that Rbass is the best thing as been created for dealing with low end since it keeps things pure and clean. 👍🏽 Another thing I have seen and have work for me when deciding what would go in the sub area vs the low bass area is seen the parts as whats is more busy sounding. If the kick is too busy sounding makes more sense put that in the bass area instead of the sub area and vice versa. But again , everything comes down to the arrangement. If both parts are busy sounding and both parts have a lot of low end ...then you have to think more on whats the style of music being played. Funk , pop...ballad, rock. Every genre has its own place for Kick and bass. But if none the options works ...chances are one of them have to be re recorded. Thats why is so important to know and plan ahead what you trying to accomplish with the song. Ex; if its ballad ...then use a ballad bass sound not a funk bass sound. lol

    Disagreed with approach #1. The bass should occupy the lows.

      @@SeriouslyDaniel I just saw this for the first time after a year and freaked out because I thought my account was hacked. Whew! What a relief some God-fearing theist hasn't hacked into my account the way Jesus hacked into my heart!

    You talk too much and don't go straight to the point which gets boring, do more practicals instead of talking 85% of the time

      I find this with most tutorials on here. Im not slating the makers of the videos but all the talking gets boring far too quickly before things get interesting. I end up not watching the videos all the way through as all the over talking melts my head
