Aerospace Engineer from germany spending his evening listening to an english professor from the states talk about One Piece. The internet is truly beautiful.
Hits harder when you know that one of the beautiful themes of One Piece is of legacy, the importance of passing things on. Recall also Dr. Hiriluk's last words to Dalton; "When does a man truly die... It is when he is forgotten". As long as there is at least one to carry on a legacy, these things cannot be stopped and will never cease to be. Because of Robin's will to live, Ohara has not truly fallen yet.
I think the way Franky and Robin's stories intertwine is just excellent. Franky's declaration that "existing isn't a crime!" is just as much about his own ships as it is about Robin's life.
It is important to note the lesson, that victims of propaganda are not immune to propaganda directed towards others. Ice Berg was the victim but was also a propagator for another propaganda directed towards Robin, thus teaching us that no one is immune to propaganda.
Don't know if you have not noticed. But when Lufy and Zoro said they did not hear Usopps words, it was a play on what Zorro said. That "if the first words we hear from him are not an apology, we will set sail without him". This way they could stay true to their words and give Usopp a few more chances.
Yees. And it also happens in Orange Town, Luffy and Zoro pretend they did not see Boodle, the mayor who treasures his town, cry. I don't think men crying is shameful but I still think its a nice gesture, maybe a little of a contradiction but whatever i like it
@@matheuspastorelli3925 They acknowledged the cry but didn't want to hurt his pride and conviction. Some cultures (including Japan) still see men crying as a sign of weakness, and by not acknowledging the tears they didn't hurt his pride. And remember, One Piece is aimed towards kids and teens, who sometimes revere ultra-masculine male characters. By "not seeing the tears", Oda tells us that it's okay for men to be crying and if you have someone crying in front of you, you shouldn't poke it as it is a sensitive topic for men. As a male, I could totally understand this gesture. I know it's a little bit odd, some even called it toxic, but it is part of male masculinity (at least for me).
@@azkarusydan6039 I maybe wouldn't even link it to masculinity. I have friends, both male and female, who have directly told me in the past that if I was to find them crying that I should leave them be until they can pull themselves together. It's good to give people their space and preserve their pride sometimes, if you are sure that they don't want help
The opening monologue brought tears to my eyes, it’s truly heartening to see that others can recognize this beautiful story for the masterpiece that it is
I personally love how Luffy’s heritage is just drop so casually. Most other series would’ve spent time built up the suspense, the mystery, and make a big deal about it when it was reveal. But here, it’s like “Oh, Luffy’s grandpa is a marine hero? Well the fist of love is the more pressing matter here” and “Oh by the way, your father is the world most wanted man, but you shouldn’t know that so forget it.” It’s simultaneously hilarious but also a nice way of showing that Luffy is special because of who he is, not his heritage and it’s not “in your face” about it either. It’s also in line with the theme of freedom to pursue your own path and loving others in spite of different believes. All three generation of the Monkey family has their own ideals and believes and even if Garp isn’t exactly happy of the paths his children took, he still love them all and while he does try to make Luffy a marine, he still respect his path as a pirate and only take action out of obligation and nothing else. Something that will be a very big deal for him in a later arc but I won’t spoil it for you.
I want to give a shoutout to Kokoro, the middle-aged depressed woman with a drinking problem who steps up to the plate when given a chance to defy the tragedy that hurt her so badly, and becomes one of the most heroic figures in the story. I think her character writing and accomplishments go really unsung since they're not at the direct center of things, but she's such a great part of this wonderful saga and I feel like she's worth highlighting!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasyHer English voice actress in the anime is so talented as well. One of the reasons I stuck to the dubbed version even after studying :)
@@Hawkcam1996 I know Oda uses her appearance as a gag, but I always felt that treatment of her was pretty harsh. Not all heroes are conventionally beautiful!
An important lesson from Enies Lobby and Water Seven is the idea that nothing is inherently good or evil just because it exists. Franky's boats, knowledge of the Ancient Weapons, and Robin herself - their existence is not a crime. It's what's done with a weapon, with knowledge, and with your life that matters, but no one can be judged guilty for simply existing as they were made. Any authority that says otherwise is dangerous.
💯When I 1st watched this arc, this exact message jumped out to me and blew my religious indoctrinated mind. Made me realize the world is not black and white
That, plus the theme around mental health and self-esteem/self-worth around Usopp and Robin, both for quite different reasons, where Usopp feels weak and cowardly compared to those around him and fears being tossed away, and Robin's survivors guilt and constant betrayal by those around her. These themes just make for such a strong arc
Shank’s meeting with Whitebeard is one of my favorite scenes. He shows how imposing Whitebeard is in such a short time as well as building up Shanks, Blackbeard and Ace.
When I finally found out what blackbeard was planning from jaya to impel down to marineford I just had this jaw drop moment when I realized what shanks was doing on whitebeards ship, he was the only one who knew
Merry's funeral made me cry in the manga but it was even sadder in the anime with all the background music and all, when Merry said "Sorry..." it's like the floodgates of my eyes were opened and I just cried.
For me, Usopp's arc was the defining feature of this saga. From his insecurities coming to a boiling point when the crew decided to get a new ship and his following leaving the crew to him having to take on a secret identity to even bear being around the crew to Sanji giving the speech to him about how everyone has different things they're capable of and we can only do our best within those boundaries all the way up to him finally throwing down the mask and being able to talk to Luffy face-to-face to give him the last bit of encouragement he needs to defeat Lucci. Usopp is my favorite Straw Hat, and this is the saga that cemented that.
Usopp's arc has been so beautiful! He is probably the most relatable Straw Hat (if we're all being honest) in that he feels insecurity about being around such high-powered crewmates and so wants to contribute. And he does contribute!
@@PokeJoshNY Personally, I’d say it’s Robin’s arc that defines this saga, since the entire saga was about her sacrificing herself for her friends, partially because she wanted to avoid the heartache of what she believed was the inevitable betrayal she’d experience from them(since that was all she knew) and then finally realizing she was wrong about her friends and having an epiphany that she finally found the friends that Saul had told her she’d find some day. It’s why “I want to live!!!” is my favorite scene in all of One Piece. But I can see an argument for Usopp’s arc being the defining feature of the saga too. Both arcs were front and center in this saga, and both arcs were beautiful to witness.
The best part of Oda's writing is how he can go from making us laugh, to making us cry so fast. Enies lobby is so amazing in the fact that the stakes are so high, yet there are some of the best comedic pieces in there to alleviate the reader/watcher from the sadness.
It Makes you Laugh It Makes you Cry it Makes you go "Holy Shit!" these are some of the Words Matt Owens said to Oda during the interview for making the One Piece Live action.
Now that you've finally met Garp, I can tell you the story behind his dog mask! Back in the day, before One Piece began serialization, it had a couple of pilot chapters: Romance Dawn v.1 and Romance Dawn v.2. In the latter of these pilot versions, Luffy receives his hat not from Shanks but from his grandpa, who even then had the same design as Garp. Once One Piece began serialization, Oda used the dog mask to hide Garp's appearance and bamboozle readers who might've recognized him as Luffy's grandpa all the way back when he first appeared in Coby's cover story. The bamboozling goes even deeper, since the whole reason Oda used Luffy's grandpa in Romance Dawn v.2 in the first place was so people wouldn't be thinking of Shanks, who appeared in v.1 and would go on to appear in the actual first chapter. These are the kinds of games he plays with the reader. Well anyway. There's also a little translation thing from when Ace and Blackbeard are talking that should be mentioned, since the official Viz translation got something wrong there that's going to be plot relevant eventually. In the Viz version Ace tells Blackbeard something to the effect that "you've been around a long time", but what he literally said and what both fan translations and some other languages (I originally read this in Finnish) used was closer to "you've lived twice the life of a normal man", which of course makes no sense since Blackbeard isn't all that old. What does it mean then? Speculate while you still can! It will make sense... eventually.
I feel like it's a reference to Blackbeard's double life, one of being a "loyal" son of Whitebeard, and his true life of being an opportunistic weasel.
pretty sure the line "you've lived twice the life of a normal man" was more to the effect of "you've lived twice the life I have" Ace is 20 around when he said this and Blackbeard is 40 yo, thus he has live twice as long as Ace. Ace follows the line with "There's no way you don't understand the situation" implying that his older age would've got him to wise up and understand what was going on
What I love about One Piece is that the panels that I have burned into my mind, the ones I remember fondly with a mix of amazement and excitement, are beautiful character moments, not fights. The "I want to live" panel, the defiance of the Strawhats against the World Government, and many more to come.
It’s a small moment in the grand scheme of things, but I’ve always loved how despite Zoro putting his foot down with Usopp having to apologize and Luffy agreeing with him, both of them pretend not to hear him until he he finally does. It lets them stick to their “if the first words out of his mouth aren’t an apology” while also showing how desperate they are to actually have him back.
@@grennbalze Idk, the English dub is pretty dang good too. Robin's VA for sure kills it with her "I want to live" even more so than the original, imo. Both a great honestly.
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy and we still don't know the reason Enies Lobby become nightless island. But in the recent chapters we got a clue about how the hole in the ocean appeared.
You've hit the true point of no return, Philip! Give the anime, both Sub and Dub a look for this one, Both actresses killed it. Absolutely nailed the delivery.
Oh man the going merry’s funeral is everyone’s first time crying over a boat and anyone who did isn’t afraid to admit it 😂 love how you eloquently explain your emotions/reactions to the series, keep it up my nakama ✊
Robin’s I want to live scream was the first thing in all of media to make me cry from pure joy. I was beyond happy to see this person struggle with the will to be alive while feeling like she’s worth nothing only to finally realize that she doesn’t want to die, she wants to live and be free and happy. It hit so close to home for me and I never thought reading could make me feel like that ever
The weirdest loop ever, me getting into Malazan because of your videos and then seeing you getting into One Piece, which I've been following since 2003-ish.
I love that you mentioned Zoro's insistence on Usopp's apology! A big part of this saga is Luffy learning to be a better captain after the falling out in early Water 7, and Zoro stepping up in his role as vice-captain is such a key part of why he's able to do that. Looking forward to your analysis of Thriller Bark, especially the character of Moriah and the dangers of the New World!
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy not wanting to be an anoying person but doing just that. There's a detail that Luffy's Crew doesn't actually have a first mate, Zoro sometimes is assumed to be the captain or vice-captain by others, but the crew itself doesn't have an hierarchy, and I enjoy that a lot. The only one exception is Luffy, who is the captain, and this saga being so important on his development of understanding what that means, and how much weight it carrys. (this is mentioned in a SBS)
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy It's not. It's just that the crew instinctively knows to follow Zoro whenever Luffy is unavailalbe. That's why the readers consider him the unofficial First Mate. He fulfills the role without actually having it.
Yees. And i love how they agree they will only accept Usopp back if the first thing that he does is apologize but until his apology they pretend they couldn't hear him. It also happens in Orange Town, Luffy and Zoro pretend they did not see Boodle, the mayor who treasures his town, cry. I don't think men crying is shameful but I still think its a nice gesture, maybe a little of a contradiction but whatever i like it
It's so good to have a writing perspective on one piece. The theories sometimes get so over the top that it's easy to forget the power of Oda's writing. Keep doing what you're doing.
When it comes to Luffy's intelligence, he's an idiot, but after time, his emotional intelligence has grown to be as powerful if not MORE SO than his battle intelligence; that's why he's one of my favorite protagonists. Speaking of which, you might have already mentioned this, but we almost never hear Luffy's thoughts, which makes him more of an enigma and is very unique amongst manga protagonists
Finally, this is THE arc that always solidifies a true One Piece fans love for the story. When you see what kind of incredibly deep story Oda is able to craft below the surface of this seemingly silly pirate story. Congratulations for making it here, and good luck on your journey through the rest of the grand line 🙏
I love these videos. The closest I can ever get to experiencing the joy of One Piece for the first time again is watching somebody else experience the joy of One Piece for the first time
It is so satisfying, having followed your One Piece journey in its entirety, to see that the months of hype you were subtly spoon-fed about this particular section of the story were not met with disappointment. Yes, it's fantastic, and the good news is that One Piece fans may have varying highlights, but we all agree that from here there aren't really any 'lows', per se, just passages which are more one person's cup of tea than another's. Oda is deeply consistent, and that's how we can read all the way to the peak of this literary mountain without feeling the sort of immense strain non-One Piece fans imagine it will take. It just never stops being good, so why stop?
My favourite implication about shooting the flag and declaring war on all of the Navy is the notion that Luffy is willingly taking on a larger burden than Robin so that she won't have to fear being one any more.
Robin is absolutely my favorite Straw Hat. I was watching a panel from comic con or something with some of the English voice actors of the anime, and Robins VA said that people have come to her and told her that they decided to live because of Robin and this arc. Just thought that was a beautiful little tidbit that made me love Robin even more.
I happened to start one piece at the same time as you, and also happen to be going through the story at the same pace as you, so it's been awesome always having someone with whom to, in a way, discuss what I've just watched. Thanks!
I love teachers that actually enjoy to watch something that most adults would find cartoony or childish, it just makes me think of how fun as a professor you must be in front of your students. I love this channel because not only does it review one piece, but I can also learn educational things as well from you, best of both worlds! Thank you Professor Philip. ❤😅
@@giyuutomioka5760 Thank you for your kind words! I think people, no matter how old, should try to keep their sense of fun and adventure alive. All the best!
Without spoiling, theres a character later in the series who’s philosophy intrigues the entire community, especially their opinions on justice. I can’t wait to see your breakdown of his ideals! Keep up the great work!
Holy shit, Franky becoming a Dismantler because of his trauma made a lot of sense, I don't know how I never realized that ! - btw the reason why people didn't want to you to check out the live action was, because they decided to reveal something way earlier and Oda originally revealed "x" during this saga. You could watch it now if you wanted. Also it's prob a good time to do so anyways because the next saga is quite large.
I love these mini arcs that fill in the world while still progressing the story. Loguetown, Jaya, Post Ennies, and many more to come are one of my favourite aspects of One Piece.
Robin yelling to her mother, all she wanted was to hold her hand and walk down the street, hits me so hard. It reminds me one of the most important thing for others, especially kids, is just to be there with them
I almost cried the moment I thought about Luffy ordering Usopp to destroy the WG’s flag in relation to his moment protecting Hiriluk’s flag on Drum Island. Oda is so genuinely great at using these character beats consistently to make moments like this feel like they matter so much more
Glad you got through Enies Lobby :D It's a really amazing arc. I like to believe it's a major turning point in the story as well since, that declaration of war against the government was such a huge moment. I liked the whole theme of gods vs demons and monsters in this arc especially due to how Robin is declared the Demon Child and how Chopper is a giant monster but also with Zoro and Sanji's devil themed techniques. The arc is littered with tiny other stories about how the bonds go deep with these characters from Sodom and Gomorrah's valiant charge to Oimo and Kaashi finding out the truth about Dory and Broggy. Though these beats pull a lot of weight on you as a reader Oda still manages to keep things fun and light with so many other ridiculous moments. My favorite being, Kaku... having the most fitting yet most hilariously creative devil fruit in the story... O_o His power being the catalyst of Hana Arashi existing. Also Nami's new proficiency with her climatact leading to her first time being a competent strategist and fighter in her own right and her own style. I also can't ignore the mastery of how Oda navigates through all these fights going on simultaneously with some fights affecting another. Whew... this ending in the most emotional moments so far and new revelations just... whew. I remember reading this in high school and folks are still dissecting and analyzing every little part of this amazing story. Welcome to the "I cried over a boat" club! Sail on!
Ennies Lobby is my favorite arc, not because of the fights (even though I enjoyed their individual fights), it's because of the emotional moments. Robin's "I want to live" is so impactful especially when times are, but her "Take me to the sea with you" showed me that she had a home, because for some reasons "the sea" has become "the home of the pirates" to me. So now, for the first time in forever, she finally has a home. And I'm so glad that she has a home now
So happy you finally reached this point! Water 7/Enies Lobby is one of those points in this story that really opens up the world and gives us a better idea of what the story of One Piece is leading towards beyond a fun treasure hunt. It's a part of the story i've come to think about a lot more overtime. This saga is really a coming of age for the crew so I just want to mention just an additional layer of symbolism that the Going Merry represents from a story perspective. Oda doesn't really hide it either. Up until now crew and the story was just sailing around merrily hunting for their treasure, literally going merry. With the changing of the ship at this time we can see that our crew has a little more instore for them than just their own goals and we start to get a glimpse of their true purpose in the wider narrative. Nothing more fitting than the Sun to quell the great darkness of the World Government and whatever bad pirates are out there! Hope you find even greater joy reading the rest of this story!
I've been enjoying your talks for a while now, and I gotta say, you're really lining up with everything I've thought about the series, but also bringing in great insights from another perspective, like the naming from hindu mythology. Keep it going man, I'm glad you enjoy the series, and I'm sure everyone will help you continue on your journey!
Man I love how me as a One Piece Fan who is cought up to the story, find myself happy and excited for another human to get further into the story. Everytime you say something, that I have already more information on, I can't wait for you to explore it and see your reaction, haha. You're just begining this amazing journey, there is still so much incredible stuff to explore. Oda is truly a one in a century stroryteller in my opinion. And i love how this story is just made for this medium. Like Lord Of the Rings is made for the epics that is a huge book or the big screen, One Piece makes all usage of the power that the medium of manga/comic has. The lightheartness, humor but also the emotions this story transports through this medium is just in a league of it's own. So happy you're enjoying it, I'm looking forward to the next few videos, especially when you'll hit the Marineford Arc!
Its so enjoyable listening to your thoughts on One Piece. The Background as an English Professor is perfect for articulating the many details in one piece that can be overlooked. Thank you for the effort to describe these Arcs!!!
Occasional watcher here (subscribing now) and I just want to say that your one piece journey is exceptionally satisfying to me, second only to Merphy's journey a while back. That intro made me tear up. Sir you are one of those people who make this story even more beautiful with deep analysis and insight. Please brace yourself for even more adventure and lovely characters. I can't wait ❤
What a perfect intro. And you finally got to my favorite moment in the entire story! I saw the anime and Robin's four words hit me deeper than any fight, joke or other impactful moment. Maybe because it hits a bit close to home but i'll leave it at that. Glad you enjoyed that moment! One thing i noticed when the Straw Hats were standing in a line in front of Robin was how it mirrored the ending of Alabasta. Robin wasn't part of the crew back then, but they all stood in a row with their backs turned to say goodbye to Vivi. Here they stand towards Robin and want to bring her back to the crew. And then Luffy asking Sogeking (who definitely isn't Usopp) to burn down the World Government flag, practically declaring war on the entire world FOR ROBIN is such a beautiful moment. Yep you hit the nail on the head with Franky, he is an underrated but still great crewmate. One moment i liked in the arc was how Kaku reacted to his devil fruit. When eating a zoan fruit, most would assume they'd get a traditionally cool animal. So whenever Kaku says "I love giraffes" to convince himself, i can't help but chuckle. If you want to cry more, you can watch the Merry's funeral in the anime. The music fits perfectly and i honestly was not ready to cry a second time in the same arc. You also explained Franky's arc perfectly. While his arc is sometimes overshadowed by Robin's sacrifice, it is still written very well. Garp was the main reason for why people recommended you wait to watch the live action. Not saying what role he plays in the Netflix live action, but he does show up. Now that you know who he is, you can safely watch the live action. And i recommend you do! Most live action adaptations of anime/manga is usually done very poorly, but that can't be said for One Piece. Everyone can see that the writers and actors love the story, and Oda gave his approval on the actors and story beats. Robin might have done bad things in her past, but she did an unforgivable thing to Franky 😂 Get your trick or treat bag ready. New power-ups, new ship, new crewmates, things are only going to get crazier from here on out! Amazing video like always, see you in the next one.
Saul's words will forever hit me the hardest in the series "no one is born in this world to be alone, the sea is vast, surely you'll meet friends who will protect you someday". It's amazing that people other than traditional manga/anime fans are getting into series like One Piece, booktubers especially. I watch you and Merphy Napier to get more of the perspective on the writing, which imo is the most important. Unfortunately a lot of manga/anime fans don't have much experience outside that medium of storytelling, so they don't pick up on the symbolism and parallels. You're getting to the point where the world of one piece is getting bigger, and now seeing Oda is a VERY intentional writer. What keeps people interested in the story is the world building, and the moments you dont see the straw hats are just as, if not more interesting than the time with the straw hats themselves. I really believe that Oda is second only to Tolkien in world building, and I've been laughed at for that because some people think one piece is a "cartoon" or "gag comic". So happy to be following you on your journey, just enjoy the ride. One piece has a lot of reread value, but there's nothing like the first time, no need to rush. Thanks for the videos and for reading!
@@caseyboyd5849 Thanks so much! I can already agree with you in that I think One Piece would have tremendous reread value - a sure sign of top tier storytelling!
So happy you're loving the series as much as I and so many others did when we first got into it. Your experiences are bringing me a ton of joy through a bit of a dark time in my life, and it's been a lot of fun reliving the series with someone. Something that's a lot of fun to pick apart in One Piece is the dynamics of the Straw Hats, how they interact, and all their small mannerisms. One in particular that you might be seeing right now is Robin slowly opening up to the rest of the crew, going from referring to them by their titles to their names. And one that I adore, since Robin is also in my top 5 of favorite characters, is that she is just as silly and imaginative as Luffy himself. I didn't notice this until long after my time into binging the series, but she uses all of the same nicknames for people that Luffy uses, and it's outright adorable, seeing her open up and let out the inner child that never got nurtured when she was younger. Knowing that this quiet, serious, cautious woman actually has a joyous heart of gold and a goofy fun streak beneath her rough exterior makes her my #1 favorite in the story, too.
Water 7 and Enies Lobby combined are my single favorite story in fiction. It's one of the only stories to ever make me emotional on a consistent basis. It does so much groundwork to relate you to these characters before letting you feel their emotions - not just with Robin but with Usopp as well. Oda tells us that we all have a place in this world, and that you can experience sadness or tragedy without despair.
I’ve been waiting for this video!! Such an amazing analysis as always, thanks!! Such a beautiful moment between Robin and Luffy, where Luffy never imposes freedom, i.e. he understands that freedom and dreams must come from within and that is why he will not save Robin until she wants it, until she chooses to live. Man, this arch hit so hard in the feels!
I've only watched Enies Lobby once, back pretty soon after it first aired, I think. Robin's "I want to live" still lives rent-free in my head. What a powerful moment. I start tearing up just thinking about it.
All of us in the community are so glad to see another come and join us in the fun and in the tears. One piece becomes a story you are genuinely grateful to have started. I'm really excited to see you experience what comes next because it only gets bigger and better from here. Its been really fun :) I remember so clearly times I couldnt help but cry only to burst out laughing with the tears still wet on my face. It's moments like those that make you love the show
Thank you so much! I am definitely feeling the gratitude, the fun, and all the emotions. It's a series that has a lot of important things to say too. All the best!
I love this trend of professors/academic people reading One Piece because in yours analisys we can see the true beauty of One Piece. Because, in the end, what holds this gigantic, creative story, is the themes and its amazing after all those years Oda manages to always stay true to his message. One Piece shaped my view of this world, to fight against injustice and to protect the ones that I love. It helped me in my darkest times because I knew that nobody comes to this world to be alone. Please keep doing this, I really appreciate it. Greetings from Brazil!
One thing I love about the end of this arc that I missed at first is how Zoro and Luffy pretended not to hear Usopp until he apologized. Zoro made it clear that they would only let him back on the ship if the first words out of his mouth were an apology. Obviously, they weren’t, so Luffy and Zoro pretended not to be able to hear him until his apology, making it “the first thing he said.” Been loving your reviews and can’t wait to see the coming arcs!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! You have finally reached the point where One Piece goes from really good to ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and it doesn’t stop! Just know that after next arc the story is gonna be getting a little bit more serious, you will still have your goofy moments but the next arcs will have even more emotional value to them. Also the story will only get better from here so be prepared. I hope you enjoy it!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I have to warn you that you have to avoid spoilers at all costs from here on out, things get crazy from now on and a lot of really important things happen especially in the saga after thriller bark (which is the next arc). I really don’t want some big events to be spoiled for you because it can ruin entire arcs.
So I showed my boyfriend one of these videos and now he’s HOOKED as well!! In case Baratie didn't convince you, in case Arlong Park didn't convince you, in case Alabasta didn't convince you, I always tell people that this saga/arc is where you truly understand One Piece. Three character storylines at once (Usopp, Robin, Franky), the Straw Hats as a crew meeting their first true internal challenge and solidifying as a family, the themes of life and existence, freedom and justice and control, insane action and comedy, and of course, just hitting us in the feels. Sometimes, you it's tough to keep track of everything Oda does in a single arc, or even chapter, because there's just so much. The newest arc alone has like 4 different primary themes for analysis' sake.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it already, but with Aokiji/Kuzan, Kuzan is his real name, Aokiji is a nickname which translates as blue pheasant. The other admirals have nicknames with a similar theme of color then animal, and the animals chosen relate to a Japanese folk tale called Momotaro.
the stretch from Water-7 to Marineford is the pinnacle of storytelling. Not just in Manga, but fiction as a whole. This was Oda at his best. The later arcs have been great ( especially the most recent one), but this stretch for me was something beyond words
Happy Wednesday sir! Glad you’ve reached such a beloved One Piece Arc/considered as one of the best One Piece arcs ever. I hope you have a wonderful day, thank you for continuing to entertain us all and glad you’re loving it ❤
I really recommend going back and watching Robin’s “I want to live” moment in the Japanese anime. Really well done, and the music they play really adds to moments like that. I really recommend going back and watching clips of the special moments from the manga if you are interested in the anime’s way of presenting those moments. Loving this journey with you, keep it up!
The death of Going Merry is still one of my top 3 of most emotional moments in One Piece. Its the next Nakama I really want to see your first impression on. They have my fave Back Story.
When Merry spoke, it hit like a truck! We have been getting emotionally punched by Oda since Water 7, finally we were winning at everything, we let our guard down and Oda sucker punched us with Merry. Whats worse, just this year I figured out a way we probably could've saved Merry Garp reveal is the major thing that we get to know early in live action, so a lot of fans would say that its fine if you start live action now. However, I would say that you hold off for a few sagas more. There is some info that would give us a new perspective on character motivations of an old character we know from east blue, live actions changes it a bit and reveals parts of it early
Mr. Chase...Im, quite frankly, having trouble forming the words to express just how deeply moved within the farthest reaches of my soul it has made me to be able to go on this journey with you, both sharing and reliving the very same joy I discovered nearly 10 years ago born from this magnificent and beloved series. Also...and most importantly...knowing im not the only man of our age to have wept over a talking (somehow) boat in a childrens (not really but the joke works better this way, im old - let me live) comic/cartoon. God bless you, man...truly 🙏👍😅🤣. Damnit I really loved that talkin' boat 😭😭😭. LSS - in all seriousness I discovered with my daughter and eventually fell in love with Luffy and the crew. One of my favorite lines in this saga is when Aokiji tells Robin "Ohara has not fallen yet"
That's a gorgeous moment!
No, YOU are crying!

So true! What a great observation!
It is important to note the lesson, that victims of propaganda are not immune to propaganda directed towards others. Ice Berg was the victim but was also a propagator for another propaganda directed towards Robin, thus teaching us that no one is immune to propaganda.
Wow what a subtle detail. I never really noted that!

Ha ha! Thank you so much. I'm proud to be one!
Welcome to One Piece
Don't know if you have not noticed.
But when Lufy and Zoro said they did not hear Usopps words, it was a play on what Zorro said. That "if the first words we hear from him are not an apology, we will set sail without him". This way they could stay true to their words and give Usopp a few more chances.
Another beautiful touch! Cheers!

CantStop D. Tears
Excellent points here! I look forward to knowing the Monkey clan more!
I totally agree! The panel of her that I shared in the video made me laugh and cheer so much!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasyHer English voice actress in the anime is so talented as well. One of the reasons I stuck to the dubbed version even after studying :)

@@gaberahamlincoln7358 It’s not really harsh if she isn’t offended by it. 😉
Very well said! Thank you so much!
Very effective storytelling!
Shanks walking up the Steps and People getting Knocked out from his presence!!!!!!!!!!! Still gives me chills
When I finally found out what blackbeard was planning from jaya to impel down to marineford I just had this jaw drop moment when I realized what shanks was doing on whitebeards ship, he was the only one who knew
@@LoveYourself-318 yeah this is true but also "Shhhhhh"
@@Nastyn1nja808 oh crap I forgot where in the story enies lobby was haha, hopefully my comment was vague enough
Thank the fates for that comedy! It's such a brilliant combination.
It Makes you Laugh
It Makes you Cry
it Makes you go "Holy Shit!"
these are some of the Words Matt Owens said to Oda during the interview for making the One Piece Live action.
@@Nastyn1nja808 I don't think ice watched that one. Can you drop the title of the video? Is it on YT?
It will make sense... eventually.
Super
Awesome comment i didnt know any of this 😭😭
I feel like it's a reference to Blackbeard's double life, one of being a "loyal" son of Whitebeard, and his true life of being an opportunistic weasel.
pretty sure the line "you've lived twice the life of a normal man" was more to the effect of "you've lived twice the life I have"
Ace is 20 around when he said this and Blackbeard is 40 yo, thus he has live twice as long as Ace.

And there are so many of those powerful character moments!

Looking forward to your analysis of Thriller Bark, especially the character of Moriah and the dangers of the New World!
Zoro = best first mate ever.
@@giovannayamaniha7114 Cool! I was beginning to wonder if “vice captain” was an official title for Zoro!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy It's not. It's just that the crew instinctively knows to follow Zoro whenever Luffy is unavailalbe. That's why the readers consider him the unofficial First Mate. He fulfills the role without actually having it.

It's so good to have a writing perspective on one piece. The theories sometimes get so over the top that it's easy to forget the power of Oda's writing. Keep doing what you're doing.
Balancing humor and drama is a huge challenge, that this arc accomplishes throughout without breaking a sweat
I'm actually amazed at how well Oda does that here!
Sail on!
Well said. So on point!
What a fantastic comment full of great insights! Thank you!
And I'm so glad that she has a home now
I'm so glad too! To see Robin's healing in this arc was a thing of beauty I'll never forget.

Robin might have done bad things in her past, but she did an unforgivable thing to Franky 😂
Get your trick or treat bag ready. New power-ups, new ship, new crewmates, things are only going to get crazier from here on out! Amazing video like always, see you in the next one.
Thank you so much! You said everything so beautifully here! I will be checking out the live action series in the near future. All the best!
"I want to live" and Merry's Funeral hit hard in the Manga but those moments were even better in the Anime.
thanks for the video!
Thank you so much for watching! I'll check out those moments from the anime!
@@ByrneBaby So beautifully said about Robin! 😊Thank you, and my very best wishes to you!
Water 7/Enies Lobby is my favorite stretch of the entire manga, I feel like it’s the first saga that really solidifies One Piece as a work of art
It's amazing. Just amazing storytelling.
Thats my first time realizing Garp says "HE SAID he saw you off at Loguetown" as if they spoke
Seems like they must have -- interesting!
What a beautifully worded introduction, Philip. Love it!
Thank you so much! This story really moved me!
So well said! I love that understanding from Luffy. What a scene!
These videos are simply amazing. Someone eloquently and beautifully sharing their thoughts about your favourite (One) Piece, is simply awesomd
I'm so glad you enjoy the videos! Thank you for watching and commenting!
In the anime, the fate of Going Merry is truly the pinnacle of emotional damage in modern media. I get teary eyed just thinking about it.
Its been really fun :)
I remember so clearly times I couldnt help but cry only to burst out laughing with the tears still wet on my face.
@@Deletaste Many thanks, and my best wishes to you!
That is such a goofy and beautiful moment that I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!
Just found your channel and will be watching every one piece chapter or arc review you do from here on out
@@gtkingly8127 Thank you! Much appreciated! 😊
Thank you so much! I'm ready (not really!) and excited (really!) for whatever comes next!
We both love the way you break down the themes and what not in the show, and not just your voice but the way you speak is incredible!! Just wanted to let ya know, definitely keep making these! (I’m sure you will, lol, but still!!) it is so nice to hear a professional analysis of my favorite show ever!! 💗🥰🫶🏻
Love your channel!
It's so encouraging when people reach out with supportive comments like this, so my thanks to you and your boyfriend!
@@illuminoeye_gaming Well said!
This was a fantastic video. Subscribed. Cheers!
Thanks so much! I’m excited to continue on my One Piece journey. I have some discussions of the series coming up. All the best!
"I'm looking forward to some Shanks here"... I am so glad you feel this way.
the stretch from Water-7 to Marineford is the pinnacle of storytelling. Not just in Manga, but fiction as a whole. This was Oda at his best. The later arcs have been great ( especially the most recent one), but this stretch for me was something beyond words
Hes not ready for marineford 😅
4 words to bring an entire fandom to tears
I can't say those four words now without tears of my own!
Happy Wednesday sir! Glad you’ve reached such a beloved One Piece Arc/considered as one of the best One Piece arcs ever. I hope you have a wonderful day, thank you for continuing to entertain us all and glad you’re loving it ❤
Thank you so much! I hope you have a wonderful day too!
I love that this arc just gets better and better with recent chapters years later.
You'll love it even more later on.
Much love from Pakistan.
@@blitzkki Cheers, and much love back to you!
finally, how ive waited
It's been such a beautiful experience! Thank you for waiting!
I look forward to discovering the next nakama!
When Merry spoke, it hit like a truck! We have been getting emotionally punched by Oda since Water 7, finally we were winning at everything, we let our guard down and Oda sucker punched us with Merry.
Whats worse, just this year I figured out a way we probably could've saved Merry
Garp reveal is the major thing that we get to know early in live action, so a lot of fans would say that its fine if you start live action now.
However, I would say that you hold off for a few sagas more. There is some info that would give us a new perspective on character motivations of an old character we know from east blue, live actions changes it a bit and reveals parts of it early
@@nikgokuhil Merry was such a vital part of the experience up until this point. I’ll miss that ship!
Love your one piece reviews!!! Glad you’re enjoying it
Thank you so much!
It truly is a splendid read and ride and I thank you for sharing your journey, Nakama.
@@TDmaker66 It’s so beautiful that you initially went on this journey with your daughter! Some of my favorite memories are the stories I shared with my daughters. And yes, it’s an honor to be in the same boat with you, nakama - even if it’s a fictional boat that makes us cry.
