As a police officer, we usually get there after the fact and then investigate. Very rarely do we arrive WHILE the crime is occurring. I always teach it’s YOUR responsibility to protect your family. Do the research and get prepared to what you think will work best. Protect your home and your family. No excuses.

It's refreshing to have a police officer come out and tell the facts about response time. I am sure most all officers know this but for one reason or another do not speak up. It does seem to be common sense though many Joe public have it cross there minds.

20-something years ago when our children were young, I thought I heard someone breaking in. Woke up my husband and told him he needed to go protect our kids whose room was right at the top of the stairs. This man said NO and literally hid under the covers. And since he was anti-gun (I grew up with them), I had to go downstairs alone armed with a cheap sword. This incident was the main reason I filed for divorce and then bought guns and train. What man hides under the covers while his children are left vulnerable.

Never had much interest in the AR platform. Was always a handgun and shotgun guy shooting clays. Bought a basic PSA AR about 8 years ago. Shot10 rounds thru it and stuck it in a closet. Never imagined it would come to this point in our country. Two weeks ago I figured I better dust off that AR and learn to use it. Added a good optic and bought a1000 rds for it. Our sheriff deputy friends tell us their response time to our home would be 10 - 15 minutes in a best case scenario. As an experienced competition shooter and life long hunter, I totally agree with every word of your presentation. There is a vast difference between a single prowler/intruder and multiple attackers. My original firearms trainer was a WWII veteran of very heavy combat in the jungles of the South Pacific - my late father, and he would have agreed with you also. Thanks again for your caring, no nonsense demeanor and presentations. I pray people listen to your advice. We do!

As a woman, I've always looked at and lived/trained/invested in being as capable of defending myself/others against threat, to the best of my ability. While I never did have children (A personal choice), I have taught many, many people how to handle/maintain firearms, including my late wife. She was all of 5' 4", 125lbs, wet, and her greatest fear was shooting the shotgun (A Mossberg Model 500). After teaching her how to do so, safely? She fell in LOVE with that beast, and it was from that point on, her chosen 'Go to' platform!
I am something of a babysitter, Nanny, or just the 'Adult-on-the-Scene' when Parents need to be away, so watching over children/young folks is part of my life, too. I will never hesitate to step up and defend any child, anywhere, and Hell hath no fury compared to what I will deliver to anyone trying to cause them harm!
We must wise-up and realize the real world is NOT safe, and we're fools to ignore all the harsh, horrible lessons History has taught.
Good on you, your Husband, for knowing this, and doing what you have done to ensure you/your family's survival!

I grew up in rural Oregon in the '50s. Crime was uncommon but my father kept guns and ammo in the house and even at the age of 10 I'd been taught how to use them. There was a P38 my dad brought back from WW2, a Remington Mod 12 shotgun, and a Winchester 94. But by far the most effective defense was our collie - German shepherd mix doggo. The dog was wonderful with us kids and my mom and with a stranger he was a real threat. A dog is the first line of defense.

I had an incident when I was camping with my family, and we had a few issues with the guy next to us, where we had asked him if he could turn down the volume of his music, as it was getting late. He took exception to it, and started mucking about with his guns, so we decided just to get in the car and just get out and get the tent in the morning. We hit in the car, turned the lights on, and this guy was about 10m in front of the car with his gun pointed at us, and all we could do was get down behind the engine block and hope he didn’t fire. We made it to the police station I think at about 1am, and it was another two hours before armed police arrived.
    Two morals to the story:
1 - Things like this often happen very quickly, when you least expect it. So make sure you have your gear ready BEFORE you need it.
2 - If we’d called the police, it would have been about 3hrs before they got there. Don’t rely on them.

Sheriff arrived 14 minutes later. My mother’s hands were shaking so bad she couldn’t dial a phone. Imagine if I hadn’t initially called the sheriff station. These are the things people don’t think about. How do you know you’ll be able to handle a situation when you’re faced with 4 attackers? You have to know how to control your physiological reactions.

I've obviously never tried shooting through my or my neighbors walls, but I tend to think of hollow point pistol rounds as being stopped by an exterior wall whereas a rifle round maybe not so much.

As a Marine in a house where my youngest is 13. We have all been around and practiced safe handling as well as basic marksmanship of firearms most of their lives. I could not agree with this more. While my Masada is within arm's reach at all times (less showering), my AR (6.5Gren) is no more than a very short sprint. There will always be a minimum of 4 mags of each caliber (9mm, 6.5gren, 5.56nato) stored near for quick access if the need arose. We did opt for a 20ga shotgun though being as my Daughters are smaller framed. The Mossburg 590 7-shot, was perfect for capacity and size for the whole home. It is alternately loaded 00buck, and slug.
I am a firm believer that every American should be exposed to firearm safety in primary school. We need to break past the stigma of every firearm is scary, respect goes a LONG way in safe handling, and use.

The shotgun is ready with 00 buck , my Remington is a 30-06 ! I recently bought a Ruger mini 14 and I bought extra 30 round mags! I have them staged all over the house! So I’m very close to a firearm everywhere in the house! And my wife and daughter are afraid of firearms and I can’t even talk about guns to them! So I’m a lone survivor with my firearms! But if something happens I’m sure they will try to learn fast!

I retired out of the military as an 18X just a few years ago. What I will say is there are ways to give yourself a HUGE advantage over those that are also highly trained. IOT give yourself this advantage, use the right equipment. In other words, cheat. If you have some thermals and an infrared laser/flashlight using bullpup shotgun capable of holding up to 40+1 rounds or a good AR setup, this gives one the upper hand. Do not be afraid to use smoke in your own house... If you have thermals, you will see right through it and the enemy will not. Cheers🍻

There is no proof he didn't say, "I would never invade America, there is a gun behind every blade of grass." and no proof that he did. This has been reported as a quote from Isoroku Yamamoto so many times that to start this quote out with, "he has been quoted as saying" or "he may have said" should be adequate enough for it not be considered offensive or misleading. Until he has a family member or someone that represents his legacy become adamant about it not being something he said, I don't understand why anyone would get in a tizzy about it. If anything, it shows the man was smarter then his government as Americans have historically had a high rate of firearm ownership. Many articles have used this quote and finished it off by saying something to the effect of, "but it may not have been said" or "it probably was not said by him", but even that isn't enough to make the mother hens of academic history happy.
History was passed down by word of mouth and with doodles on cave walls and we don't just throw it out because it wasn't published or because there was a camera available to verify or prove it.
The USA won the war against Japan and as you know, "History is written by the victors." Which was possibly said by Winston Churchill, but maybe not.
So I guess since that quote has no proof, "the loosers of wars are the ones who write most of the history books just out of pure spite", but don't quote me on that.

One thing that I've learned in 20+ years in the US Military, is that "Situational Awareness and a having a Basic Home Defense Plan" IS 3X more important than the type and quantity of the weapons you have for home defense. 'Firepower' is only important WHEN the Shooting Starts! The first thing You need to do is, "Look at Your Home and property from the Intruder's Perspective is paramount." Keeping in mind that Criminals these days can use common software tools like 'Google Earth' to assess and pre-plan their Attack on Your Home. Once You have determined the ways that a Criminal would likely enter Your Home', you can start figuring out how You should go about defending Yourself in each situation as well as, the details of WHERE & HOW.

Very good point. After watching some tutorial shows about self and situational awareness. Reading @bravofighter below, 20 feet is not safe. I see people walking out of Walmart unaware of their environment. Avoidance and a plan as you suggest and preparation. My comment about castles, the Shoguns castles differed in that they a designed kill zones and dead-ends in what appeared to be safe areas. The reason the castle wooden part over hung the stone was gaps for archers. As General Buford at Gettysburg said, I can see what will happen before it happens and he chose the high ground. And you would know better, but I picture if something happens and multiple strangers try to defend, it would already be like an unorganized route of retreat, no continuity. I could only hope someone like you is there.

In Canada, we are seeing a spike in home invasion “teams”. 5+ individuals kicking in doors then terrorizing the occupants - usually seeking quick cash and car keys - but physical harm as well. Please lock and reinforce your doors when you’re home. Give yourself the time you need to access your defensive tools (which, in Canada, sadly, is highly restrictive). And no matter what tool you use, train - even minimally - to understand and to be competent in its operation.

Had this happen to me about ten or so years ago. I owned a townhouse that was a rental property. The girl was affiliated with MS13. I had my life threatened and they told me they were going to kill. I only had a handgun at the time. One night 30+ showered up to do just what they said they were going to do. I was the only protector of my family (parents and grandmother). We got lucky that night that when they saw me armed and in the second story window that they ran. The next day I bought a Glock, AK and an AR plus a Mossberg 500. Oh the cops, took them 45 minutes to get to me. I also live in the city. A big story with the police too. They didn’t believe me until they passed the case to the gang task force. They then believed. We still live with the thought of them returning.

One night at 0100 in the morning my dog went ballistic, turned out someone tried to kick in the door of the single mother right next to me. I figure my dog barking scared them off. Thing is, I was so bleary from waking up that I didn't take my pistol with me to investigate the door. 30 minutes later when I was woken up again by the dog, I went to the door ready for a fight only to find a local deputy wanting to take a statement. 100% not only having the means but the mindset to be ready to defend yourself is critical.

I am an old man, but I'd like to point out that most of this discussion is about which firearm will give you an edge. Let's discuss that edge. Drink less, so you sleep lighter. Crack your windows so you can hear what's coming before it hits the door. Dogs and security systems help. BLOCK the doors you don't need, at least at night, so there are fewer points of entry. Set up barriers that will make noise, like a pile of cans. Do what you can do to enhance your chances in a firefight, THEN we can discuss which gun gives us a further edge.

Learn where to lube and how much. For combat rifles, they re-lube every 500 rounds and why they are so easy to take down in the middle of a firefight.

I’m a former Marine and I retired after 29 years as an inter-city Police Officer.
I agree with others that say you must accept the responsibility for your family’s safety.
Mike, you make good content. But I think this video is one of your best yet. Especially considering all that is going on world wide, as well as the potential of issues domestically.

As a fellow guntuber, I just want to say "thank you for making this video knowing you wouldn't be monetized. I was wondering where the ads were until I saw the banana mag on the AK. You really are doing something good with this video by talking to as many people as possible and let them know their G19 isn't going to stand up to 4 dudes with semi-auto rifles.

Having worked in ERs and Level 1 Trauma Centers most of my adult career, with a strong penchant to GSWs (Gun Shot Wounds), the magnitude of difference in contrasting the Wound Dynamics in what I call the TMOI (Traumatic Mechanism of Injury) from a 9 mm round vs the 5.56 is considerable. Most A-Zone / Midline Head-Cervical 5.56 GSWs, die in the field. I’ve had several 9 mm GSWs to the heart ♥️ stop by the ER, 2 weeks later as they were being Discharged. The ability to “Reach out & Touch Someone” is certainly a significant Tactical Advantage. Dr. Hull,MD. ⚕️🇺🇸

I wouldn't want to take the chance of being shot with a 9mm hp though. And even if you get a lot of guys shot with 9mm in the ER and they might live - at least they weren't doing much anymore. I mean they were in the ER. Much better than a sharp stick I would say.

I have taught my ex wife and my kids everything they need to know about firearms. They even have license to carry too. It is better being safe than sorry.

No offense, but I have to say that's pretty awesome. I've been using firearms for 60 years (starting from when I was 8) and I don't yet know everything I need to know about firearms. But it is great that you taught them, presumably what you mean, enough to be safe using them in their own defense and/or defense of your home and family. Everyone should do that. My children all grew up using guns safely at the range; none of us are hunters or have been in gun battles. I used to hunt but found I was a lot more successful if I did my bulk meat hunting in the aisles of Sam's club.
