🚨 DISCLAIMER: I played with the game’s “modern” control scheme which is broken. I am told if you tough it out with the original controls it is possible to traverse obstacles. But yeah, blame me for using the updated controls like it’s my fault they were added to the release.

The issue people have is that you say the remaster sucks.
You could have been more nuanced.
The modern control scheme does indeed not work optimally, however, several people have played through the game and managed to make it work.
Looking at the clips you chose to put in the review, you are willingly ignoring the information the game is giving you.
At the training course in Lara's Home, the first jump is a standing jump, as Lara says, but you choose to make a running jump, which does lead to not being able to complete the next jump without stopping.
The walk button is your friend in this game, cause it makes Lara not fall off edges, and you can look where and how far a jump will be. Making it easier for you to decide to go for a standing, running or running+grab jump.
The remaster is clearly aimed at people that played the game in their youth, and most of these remember the tank controls and (maybe with some frustration) accept that.
I'm a Tomb Raider fan (yes, even Angel of Darkness), and I think the remaster is about a 7.5/10.
The modern control scheme needs work, there are several texture issues, some objects aren't always solid when they should be, and I've come across several other (small) bugs.
But we are getting 3 games (with "rare" expansions) and a nice graphical update for 30$, in today's Gaming market, I think that's fair value.

@@AngelBatistaa The modern controls need a patch. You will not get an argument from me about that. But that is a problem only if it was the only option to play the game - and it isn't. In fact, there is a viable, perfectly functioning alternative - which is specifically designed with the grid system and precision jumping in mind. And those controls are perfect for this type of gameplay - and not difficult to learn at all if you just listen to the instructions from the tutorial areas. But the guy in the video is just flailing around and ignoring everything Lara is saying. So, you can tell how much effort the guy put into actually trying out the game.
It would be similar to me trying to play Civilization or chess... flailing about for 10-15 minutes while ignoring all the tutorial messages and then saying those games suck. You should at least familiarize yourself with the gameplay mechanics before you make a judgment on a game.

The moment you title your video "tHe ReMaStEr SuCkS" you lost credibility. I'm a gen z and I love this 100x more than the modern Tomb Raiders, and I swap between both control schemes. Neither one is broken. Maybe you're just trash at gaming in general?

    • @AngryAtlantean
      @AngryAtlantean 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@AngelBatistaaYeah, and the problem is the games weren't designed with 360° movement that modern games afford.
See, one method of getting the first secret in The Caves level requires you to backflip onto the slope and then jump towards the ledge to grab it.
The modern controls don't let you backflip normally because of how the 360° movement works. To backflip with modern controls, you need weapons drawn, which neuters any action save for shooting.
There's a reason many modern games have auto grab mechanics and auto climb mechanics, and that's in part because modern control schemes don't offer the precision tank controls do.

  • @CritStanley
    @CritStanley 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +68

New Players that haven't played the classic Tomb Raider games before, Vaughn and many others who share his opinion that the control scheme is broken and unusable are incorrect and here's why:
Vaughn has an example in video 3:05 of why the controls are "broken". But the reality is that he is actually demonstrating he doesn't know that Lara has a standing jump that is shorter than her running jump. He fails this jump over and over again, because he kept attempting a running jump instead of just walking to the edge of the platform and doing the shorter standing jump.
The modern control scheme may be awkward and their implementation not as fluid as they should have been, but they *still successfully follow the same jumping rules as the classic control scheme.* Had Vaughn _paid attention_ during the Lara's home tutorial level, he'd know this. But he didn't. Instead he "reviewed" a game he played less than an hour of and condemned the whole thing as broken without even trying to get used to the readily offered classic control scheme.
Further proof of his lack of understanding the game, he thought the 180 spin move was a dodge move.

I don't usually comment on TH-cam videos but this remaster was never designed to be a 'modern game for the modern day gamer', it's a remaster of the original classic Tomb Raider game that many of us grew up on. If that's not your cup of tea, that's fine, and it just means this isn't the game for you. It doesn't make it a "bad" game, nor should be referred to as 'Tomb Raider Remastered Sucks'.
This remasters actually exceeds the fanbase expections in terms of gameplay, graphics and performance. I don't think it's fair for you to say that it 'tarnishes the nostalgic adventure of Lara Croft' when you admit that you didn't grow up playing the original games, apart from TR2 which you rented and admit you didn't get far on.

    • @VaughnJogVlog

The issue is that very few games measure up to how we remember them. Movies are much more accessible. But many gamers don’t go back and play an old title until it’s reissued on modern hardware. There have been games I played well after their time and found them to be perfectly suitable. But most, especially early 3D titles suffer. Tomb Raider Anniversary is a far more accessible outing for players who need today’s control schemes. I anticipated something closer to that with the modern control scheme option. I realize people played this on a PS without analog sticks and were fine with it, but for me it was like playing with limbs missing now that I require more control.

As much as I apprentice challenge, there are modern conventions that make returning to a game manageable. If you have a lot on your plate and can't recall what to do next when you return to a game a week later, it's good to have some kind of guidance. The old approach worked when a player didn't have access to hundreds of games vying for his attention.

@@UnchainedEruption sorry but they dont... the newer tomb raiders are more story driven, with clear indicators of what to press etc... not bad games, just different
the originals are more about the puzzle game play, the f around and find out approach, hence no save anytime and no autosave option back in the day. And little in the tutorial other than the very basic controls, part of the puzzle was learning the controls.. real consequences for your choices, pressing the wrong button could mean a death. traps can instant kill you.... more risk = more reward....the game loop was explore, die, start level again, explore a little bit more, die again... repeat x number of times, find a miss-able save crystal, save, repeat until end of level, save, repeat
the experience of exploration is very different, the reward for exploring just a little more of the level was far more rewarding due to alot more of your time being at risk. And the atmosphere due to the risk is also more intensive. i think the clunky and janky controls also helped with the risk reward and intensive atmosphere in the older games aswell

I don't normally comment stuff like this and frankly I don't like to, cause I don't want to come off as rude, but I gotta be honest, this is the worst review I think I've ever heard.
It's the definition of "I don't like it, therefore it's bad.". You can't just say the game is bad because it's not good for modern gamers or because it requires a lot of skill to beat.
Also, have you even heard anyone's opinions on this collection? It most ABSOLUTELY lived up to our expectations, if not surpassed it, all we were expecting was just texture and lighting changes, but this remaster not only enhanced the game's graphics excellently, it managed to keep the nostalgic vibes of the original classic games, even keeping the original music and audio, not to mention they added some great smaller features such as subtitles, boss enemy health bars, and highlighting interactable objects, such small features yet they do so much to improve the gameplay experience.
Also, you outright admitted that you have never played the original tomb raider games before, who are you to speak for everyone else by saying that this game "tarnishes the nostalgic adventure of Lara croft." when you yourself have no nostalgia associated with this game to look back on?
Look, I'm not trying to be b*tch, please don't take this comment the wrong way, if you don't like these remasters then that's completely fine, you are entitled to your own opinion and I get that this remaster (and game) is not everyone's cup of tea, but you can't just say the game is bad simply because you don't like it.

"It's something you're going to call 'skill issue'" - I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but let's see what you have to say.
"Tomb Raider reboot trilogy that kicked off in 2013, sort of the closest thing to Uncharted..." - I'll give you props for identifying that the reboot trilogy is much closer to uncharted than it is to the original games. I played through the survivor trilogy recently, and while they are enjoyable games that have a good sense of exploration, their platforming is incredibly "floaty" and imprecise compared to the original games.
"Short-lived and much derided tank controls" - Tank controls have some very distinct advantages over modern camera-relative controls. The most obvious is that you don't really have to care about the exact positioning of the camera when performing complex actions. Concrete example: Say you're lining up a long jump from a 1 block platform that is against a wall. You line up the jump, walking, pivoting, and possibly using the look button. Then you tap back to get a runup, putting you against the wall and probably swinging the camera out in front of Lara or up close to her head. However, the controls are completely independent of the camera so you simply do a running forward jump as usual and land exactly where you lined Lara up to go. Tank controls also make it possible to control Lara during cinematic moments (where the camera zooms to something else, or assumes a static position). A specific example would be the boulder/spike wall sequence in the first level of TR2. The camera zooms to the boulders as the dramatic music starts, it then then positions itself in a static position when you fall to the pit with the approaching spike walls. The first time (or few times) you do this sequence, you're probably going to die or scrape through it clumsily. Coming back to that sequence with a good grasp of the controls you can use the precise movements to pick up both the ammo and the jade secret without taking any damage (to be specific: left flip, standing forward jump, right shimmy, and a precise stop)
"Many were playing on consoles that didn't have dual analog sticks, or even one" - I will give you props for identifying that the games were released on platforms that didn't yet have standard analog control inputs. Many important parts of Lara's move set in the traditional control scheme are tied to tapping a directional button (back for a runup, jump plus a direction for a standing jump/flip). Many people (including myself) find these moves much easier to pull off using the D-pad rather than the analog sticks, since that's that they were designed for.
"Entirely unable to land the first jump in TR2" - You then proceed to show multiple attempts at doing a running jump instead of a standing jump and completely overshooting the platform. Even with modern controls, all you need to do is walk to the edge, line up the jump, and then press forward and jump together.
"Requires archaic timing of jumps that you simply will not get used to" - Except there are many, many people that have gotten used to this system and enjoy it because of it's precision and consistency. All of Lara's moves position her exactly in the game's grid system, once you understand how they work, moving her is a joy. A lot of the games' secrets require this understanding of Lara's moves and often use several highly specific moves in sequence (this colosseum secret in the first game is my favorite example to point people to: th-cam.com/video/H7ohzuCJnzA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=nIabbd3Ev_iypkGe&t=172 )
"Your dodge is the opposite of every dodge you've seen for the past 20 years with a baked in 180 degree turn." - That's because it's not a dodge, it's a roll, and the 180 degree turn feature is designed mainly for movement/platforming (as a quick turn when running from a boulder, turning around while falling off a ledge to grab it, setting up for a running jump in the opposite direction). In combat, the roll is meant to be used with jumps to keep enemies in front of Lara so she can keep blasting them. The remaster added the jumping roll to TR1 which makes makes many combat scenarios easier.
"Fails to take into account modern gaming conventions" - That these games pre-date and were not designed for. Just because something is unfamiliar does not make it inherently worse. Modern games are much more polished and approachable, but they also do quite a bit of handholding and water down their base mechanics in an effort to appeal to the widest audience possible. The OG Tomb Raider games have a learning curve, both Croft Manor and the Peru levels of the first game do a great job of teaching you how the controls work (Croft Manor is explicit, Peru has many jumps that are over water/not all that high.
Given the evidence you presented throughout your video, I would call this a skill issue. The most glaring evidence is your lack of understanding about the difference between a standing and running jump that is explained in the Croft Manor tutorial by Lara herself very explicitly.
Also, the content warning you mention at the end wasn't about Lara's appearance, but the depictions/stereotypes of certain ethnicities. I don't personally see the need for the warning in the game, but if you're going to mention that controversy at least get the content/context right.

I played these game on release with no analog sticks, I found the analog sticks so weird when they where released.
It was so easy for me to straight back to d-pad for these games and funny part is before this remaster was announced, I still played TR occasionally.
"Requires archaic timing of jumps that you simply will not get used to" It's actually quite easy, I bet he went straight to "Modern controls" aka "TR Legend/Anni/Underworld controls" Even though I use Tank, I gave Modern a try during Lara's Home and the first level before I went back to Tank.
Yeah, its definitely a skill issue.
And the content warning was weird and unnecessary. Lara's appearance 😂 she looks fine to me.
Similar to TR, some people tried that one with a Japanese game(can't remember the name) calling the female character unrealistic and no women looks like that.

You have to understand that these games do not work AT ALL without these particular controls. The levels are all built on a grid system and traversing them requires these controls in order to have any form of consistency and precision. Understanding how the controls work but not liking them is perfectly normal and that's just an opinion. Which is ironic as Tomb Raider Legends are just that and they were pretty mediocre for it. Tank controls are not a product of a by gone era, it is a intentional design choice that makes games like these possible with the the more slow pace methodical platforming and puzzle solving akin to the original Prince of Persia. I'm glad this remaster celebrates those times instead of just nuking it from orbit like the aforementioned Legends.

Legends is far superior because of that. You want games to be preserved? Then let them be in their actual original state, without remastering it. To be different enough to actually justify its existence. That way it doesn't compete with the original.

I love it, those games are original Dark Souls game, you play one game for long, remember every level, die so many times you get use to it....and love it when you win and get all pickups and secrets. It is a very specific title aimed at a very specific demographic. A lot of people might not like it, but I have yet to see a release that has matched the expectations of its fan base more closely than this launch. It is remarkably good. It is a perfect example of a remaster done right. That being said, it is also a mystery that it was ever developed and released.
Because it is certainly not for everyone. But a company hiring modders of a beloved franchise and then giving them free reign to recreate a classic in a modern look, and then those developers sticking so closely to the source material is simply astonishing. I didn't think it was possible.

I applaud you for actually interacting with people in the comments, but I would encourage you to be more open for critique. It might be a good idea to do a bit more research on the titles you review, and maybe focus a bit more about who the game is for. This release sits at "very positive" on Steam, 75 points on Meta for critics and 79 from players. That is quite surprising for a release of an old classic. If you fuck up a remaster, you risk pissing off all the fans of the original.

@@VaughnJogVlog Why are you even bother responding, if all you are going to respond with is bile?
Yeah, sure... I'd admit that my initial comment was a bit hyperbolic, but so was your review. You completely ignore what the game aims to achieve, while at the same time claiming that it sucks. If you want to succeed as a reviewer, you need to research the products you are reviewing more thoroughly. The general population on both Steam and Metacritic seems to disagree quite strongly with you, so does the majority of professional critics. Now, are they all wrong and you are right, or might it be because you are making judgements on the game based on the wrong qualifications.
Stating in a review that this might not be intended for you if you align with current video game conventions is completely fair. The classic Tomb Raider games are definately not for everyone, and I do not hold that against you. But to say that it sucks is quite hard.
Thing is, you have a lot going for you here. Your presentation, your editing, your narration and your voice are all of good quality. Being able to establish a career on TH-cam covering games is hard, as there are thousands upon thousands of others trying to do the same. I think you might have a chance, but if you want to make it, you need to avoid mistakes like this. Based on this review, I am guessing that you are not that old yet. Take some time and learn about video game history. Play classic games, get to know the history behind how games have developed over the years.
I mean this genuinely, I hope you succeed. I would love to be able to pull it off myself, but I do not have the presentational skills, nor the ability to structure my arguments well enough to be able to pull it off. I am able to somewhat recognize what it takes to be a successful reviewer though, and if you address this criticism, you might actually have a shot.
And I also applaud you for responding to comments. It shows you care, even though you seem to be a bit too quick to gravitate towards insults and snark. It is not a good idea to insult your audience.
      Best of luck!

Yes the modern controls do suck, they definitely need some work but in the meantime there are tricks to work around it. It's a remaster not a remake, it's not made for modern conventions. Expecting something more is squarely on you. I may be nostalgic for the OG Lara but i can also see that modern Lara is a far cry from what she was, the focus shifted massively and i hate the modern games for it. The dodge is not meant to be a conventional dodge but a quick turn as for the 'archaic jumps you never get used to', that's purely a skill issue. New controls suck? I agree, I managed to play with it for a while but it really wasn't my cup of tea since I'm used to the tank controls (apart from the obvious missing movements). Now, the whole game was designed around the old controls, they work perfectly, it's not that hard to understand if you actually listen to what Lara says and still you chose not to understand because "you will not get used to", then you shouldn't have tried the game at all even less making this video. You knew it's an old game and that it's just a remaster, meaning they didn't change anything apart from the graphics, you should take your time to actually learn it and then make a review about it instead of being like "Oh, games had bad controls, I can't learn this, it sucks".

Let me explain: Lara's movement with the tank controlls are the basis of the entire level design, puzzle design and enemy encounter meaning that controlling her is vital to the game. The modern controls where implemented for babies like you who if they don't understand something within 5s they throw a tantrum. If you'd actually spend some time and learn to understand the controls you might have made that jump but watching that seeing that you simply did not comprehend that Lara jumps the same distance every time I understand why you hate the controls. The fact that the remastered changed nothing from the originals aside from the visuals is exactly why this game is great. Modernizing it for a modern gaming audience and pandering to suit current ideologies would not make this a true Tomb Raider game. The modern Tomb Raider games by Crystal Dynamics do this but they aren't true Tomb Raider games. Yes, the controls take some time to get used to. Once you get used to the default tank controls (the way it was meant to be played) its alot of fun and wholly satisfying experience. Every jump takes some planning, timing and patience. It will take a few hours to get out of the modern controls mindset for sure, though. Modern controls don't work well with the way the game was designed like a grid puzzle.

The analogy to the old controls being a different language to modern games is actually one that I find quite apt. It is significantly easier to learn languages when you're young or when it's the only language you're exposed to. But if you try to learn a new language as a full adult, you'll need a lot more mental adjustment to even get the basics down; hence why parents start their kids on being multi-lingual early. People talk about how they got through these games as a kid as though that was some kind of handicap, when in reality it may have been more of an advantage. Even moreso if these were the only kinds of games you spent your time on.

This remaster is not perfect, but it's absolutely the best way to play these milestones of videogame-history. Tomb Raider Anniversary was a full blown new game, based on the story of TR1, so that does not count at all. Regarding the controls: the remaster defaults to the old tank-controls, while the modernised control-scheme is added as a bonus (same as the new graphics that can be toggled at will). All in all this is a fantastic deal at $30, which is what a lot of fans would have paid for just 4K60 in 4:3. Out of curiosity: what would your rating for the Metal Gear Solid Collection be?

Then it would be accepted that sometimes you have to learn a game's controls in order to enjoy them and videos like this wouldn't exist. When I heard about this release I was super sceptical, fearing that a modernized reboot would do away with the control scheme and the old story. Finally a game that doesn't hold your hand.
The most important topic of a review of a remaster is how close they resemble the originals. Thankfully, it seems to be close.
I've replayed the originals both on PC and Playstation numerous times, and I strongly disagree with you. These games seem to target the old fans. I hate the reboot with a passion, CD destroyed everything that made Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider. Now lets hope they bring back the other old classics as well.
I am not saying "git good", but I am saying that you should judge a product on its own merrits and take into account who it is made for.

Also i wanted to point this out as it may help you if you do play again, you dont time jumps in tomb raider. its based on distance and if you are already moving and hold the jump button she will jump when she is suppose to. Which is one square. Which is why if you ever see a video of someone playing it you'll see them walk to an edge, hop back then run jump. Its pretty much impossible to fk up the jumps in this game the minute you realise what jump to do where.
Also rolling isn't a dodge button. Its just a quick 180 turn. Its a way of quickly changing direction

Lara narrates at her home to do something like this, but you can’t with the modern controls. If the original controls were the only option, I probably would have toughed it out a little longer.
I think the state of gaming being what it is now with so many games using nearly identical controls makes adapting to these changes too difficult for me. But hey, maybe some day I’ll give it another spin.

@@VaughnJogVlog I hear theres actually workarounds for the modern controls, but honestly I tried hem once. They sucked balls. They break the camera too which is like 95% fine if you use the tank controls and use the regular look button on them. I hear theres actually hidden inputs to do the hop back on modern and you can also trigger it if you draw your guns but honestly i dont understand how they couldnt implement it properly.
They could have had one control scheme where the dpad does the old input style and the analogue do the modern and if you wanted to pivot or hop back and sidestep you could have used the dpad for those movements.

3:30 it's because modern games are void of almost any challenge and hold your hand all the way through. These game didn't do that. It's why I find myself playing more older games these days

I can under being a little confused, but directionless with rudimentary controls not functioning as a player would expect is entirely different. I almost wouldn’t be surprised if you had to alternately jam buttons to walk players would call it amazing simply because it’s old and they grew up with it.

@@VaughnJogVlog it was built around those controls. It's basically on a grid. As for directionless? You're meant to explore... Unlike games now that drag you through a corridor by the hand

I never usually comment on youtube but wow. This has to be one of worst reviews I've ever seen.
To sum it up, you made a 5 minutes long video to say that you have skill issues.
This is a remaster, so it keeping its basic tank controls should be normal imo. The modern controls are ass I can agree on that.
If you want a different gameplay, go play a remake like anniversary or something lmao

No, it's awesome and the modern controls are amazing, I played old controls my whole life but modern are much better. Even before the patches the collection was fantastic, now after patch 4 it's perfect.
