That spakling is great stuff. I discovered it a few years ago and use it instead of the famous "ground goop" for small landscaping projects. Keep up the great work!
Good morning Tim, very fine layout. Have not saw anything on the railroad damage from the two hurricanes. People damage is out of this world. News on TV only tells about any derailment.
Both NS and CSX suffered major track damage in TN and NC. For NS, it wasn’t a major artery so they are able to re-route traffic while the repairs are being made.
Thanks Tim. I don't like Wiring 'Under the Boards' and my 2-road Staging is all visible. Thus, all my Turnouts are Hand-op. too. The Roadbed techniques were good to watch. In case you are applying the Spray-on Ballast, will you be establishing the Track Centre-line first (T-Pins?) please?
Thanks for watching. The roadbed has been sprayed with the textured paint but it is easy to identify the centerline. Stay tuned to see how much has been completed on the next video. Trains will be operating over the new line segment soon!
Hmmm. I'm very interested in seeing the track flow in the short segment between the end of the switch and the roadbed to Ragland. The camera perspective makes it look very sharp. Do you use easements on either end of these curves or not bother with your normal track speeds. As you expand, will you have any "Dispatcher-operated" power turnouts, or always manual ones? Will any track be signaled? Or just warrant control? Always fascinating to see your techniques.
The sharpest part of the curve is 24” but it does have easements. All track on the SC is operated either in Yard Limits or Track Warrants. No signals or switches controlled by a dispatcher. I model secondary lines that were always considered dark territory.
nice update... so with your helix... how many cars can you move through the helix before the train stalls?... also how many locos are you planning to use when moving trains through the helix?
Thanks! I ran a test on an earlier video with two units that were really struggling to move around 24 cars almost stalling out. My plan is to use three units pulling anywhere between 16 to 24 cars. The Birmingham storage tracks are limited to 22 cars each so it’s doubtful I’ll run anything longer than that.
"Just like frosting a cake..." So, chunks of foam and cork will randomly break off and contaminate the "frosting". The dog will try licking it, embedding fur in the process. Family members will critique your techniques and tell you the "right" way to do it. You'll end up crying in the bathtub while eating half the container of frosting, and when you finally emerge from the bathroom, the kids will have eaten half the cake despite it having been intended for the Church's cake raffle. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Hi Tim, have a look at DCC Concepts they make some slow motion surface mount switch machines which may be useful at the top of your helix.
Thanks!

I thought this was a layout update, not an ops session.
Some folks like to see the trains run. The update is in the second half.
