    The graveyards of Flanders' Fields are littered with forebears of mine - and who remembers them now? I do, a bit, and so do these magnificent singers. May their voices and their spirit last forever!

    I sing this every day walking my dog through the fields and the local forest. Rain, snow, sun. Nobody hears it but me and the dog which is probably just as well, but its so beautiful even I couldn't ruin it.

    I read the comments, listed below this simply beautiful piece of musical performance, and couldn't help but reflect on the ability of the human race to bicker about the stupidest minutae. Who cares where it originated?, who cares what show it was performed in?, what difference does it make when it was first performed? Their sublime talents have lifted notes from a page and transformed them into a performance worthy of the writer - to be enjoyed, reflected upon, and learned from. Thank You CB & S we are in your debt!!

    Yes we will sure be remembered for all of our wars and brutality, our cold-heartedness and cruelties, our inhumane, selfish, prideful ways...nearly killing everyone and everything on this planet. It's about time we get a grip on ourselves and start living a Life of Love, which is the only thing Jesus ever asked us to do...a new commandment I give unto you: LOVE.

    War Horse was the best play I saw during my week in NYC! Even though it was only their 4th performance it was amazing!

    Went to see War Horse last week, one of the best pieces of theatre ever.
    This is such an emotional song, I love it. ♥

    Smashing song and wonderful harmonies.
    I met CB&S last year at a singing workshop. They are delightful, knowledgeable and talented people; and very generous with their material.
    Given the Bonar/Sankey origin of the song, I hope CB&S won't mind if I add this to my repertoire.
    It could take a while!

    I'm 57 years old and I've never heard of this beautiful hymn before. Pastor Samson is singing it on Revelation TV. Church Without Walls. It was on at 10.30am, 8.30pm and it's on again at 1am this night time. I'm going to Google the lyrics.
    Happy Saint George's Day ✝️

    5 stars. Excellent vocal harmonies. I'd have never found this but for liner notes on the Chumbawamba album 'Singsong and a Scrap'
    Thanks for posting.

    This day will only be remembered, as it fades from today's ledger. My grieving will be relieved with my Hopes for tomorrow. .
    Our humanity’s greatest hope is for tomorrow. Tomorrow is where Hope is forever young, strong, and is always magnificent in its power to seduce dreamers, and the wretched alike.
    Tomorrow The Sun will rise, and I will answer it's call, waiting, watching, and wanting.
    Thank You for posting this musical treasure.
    Please Be Well, and Stay Strong on Your journey, Will

    "Author: Horatius Bonar.
    Horatius Bonar was born in Edinburgh, in 1808. His education was obtained at the High School, and the University of his native city. He was ordained to the ministry, in 1837, and since then has been pastor at Kelso. In 1843, he joined the Free Church of Scotland. His reputation as a religious writer was first gained on the publication of the "Kelso Tracts," of which he was the author. He has also written many other prose works, some of which have had a very large circulation. Nor is he less favorably known as a religious poet and hymn-writer. The three series of "Hymns of Faith and Hope," have passed through several editions. --from Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A. 1872"

    ONLY REMEMBERED
    (lyrics)
    1. Fading away like the stars of the morning,
    Losing their light in the glorious sun;
    Thus would we pass from the earth and its toiling,
    Only remembered by what we have done.
    Chorus
    Only remembered, only remembered,
    Only remembered by what we have done;
    Thus would we pass from the earth and its toiling,
    Only remembered by what we have done.
    2. Shall we be missed, though by others
    succeeded,
    Reaping the fields we in spring-time have sown?
    Yes, but the sowers must pass from their labours,
    Ever remembered by what they have done.
    3. Only the truth that in life we have spoken,
    Only the seed that on earth we have sown ;
    These shall pass onward when we are forgotten,
    Fruits of the harvest and what we have done.
    4. Oh, when the Saviour shall make up His jewels,
    When the bright crowns of rejoicing are won,
    Then shall His weary and faithful disciples
    All be remembered by what they have done.

    Britain, please remember that the people of both world wars died for YOU!
    They did NOT die for someone else's children, Britain should not clean up the mistakes of other countries, your ancestors died for YOU and British children. Love your people, love your history or we will die out. Teach your children your local culture and teach them history of Europe and why we fought and what people fought for.
    Thank you to all of the fallen for giving me the chance to live in a free and amazing country.

      @Nyerguds 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Please don't spoil this song with narrow-minded nationalism. Instead, consider the staggering amount of different nationalities of the soldiers who died in these world wars. You'd be surprised, even when just talking about the first one. They were called _world_ wars for a reason, you know. A lot of non-British people died for your country too.

    • @hawkstormspoems6126
      @hawkstormspoems6126 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      true, in Flanders fields fell more then coutless victims on both sides. Lest ye forget that there were not only British but also Belgian and French soldiers....nowadays burried side by side next to the army they once fought (Germany) in the same area they once fought.

    • @BaronLipton
      @BaronLipton 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      And i thank the non-British for their sacrifice too. That wasn't narrow minded-nationalism. Being supportive of your own people's history isn't 'anti someone else'

      Baron Lipton
      wasn't such but being Flemish/Belgian myself I'm just reminded of the horror of the great war. And that it has left a mark upon Flanders, Belgium and Europe in a whole.

    Sorry chum, this song was indeed in "The Big Picnic" in Glasgow in 1994 or 1995. It was about the pals battalions and was a hugely impressive production. The Ship was also performed in 1990 as you say, as part of the year of culture.

  • @hopscotchboss

    @HabbieGranny Actually it was the 1990 production "The Ship", also by Bill Bryeden with music from John Tams

    May I recommend home lads home
    Sung by Cockersdale from a poem by A poem by Cicely Fox-Smith (1882-1954),
    set to music by Sarah Morgan
    Lyrics
    Behind a trench in Flanders the sun was dropping low,
    With clank, and creak and jingle I heard the gun-teams go;
    And something seemed to ‘mind me, a-dreaming as I lay,
    Of my own old Hampshire village at the quiet end of day.
    Brown thatch and gardens blooming with lily and with rose,
    And the cool shining river so pleasant where she flows,
    White fields of oats and barley, and the elderflower like foam,
    And the sky all gold with sunset, and the horses going home.
    Home, lad, home, all among the corn and clover
    Home, lad, home when the time for work is over
    Oh there’s rest for horse and man when the longest day is done
    And they go home together at setting of the sun
    Oh Captain, Prince and Blossom, I see them all so plain,
    With tasselled ear-caps nodding along the leafy lane,
    Somewhere a bird is calling, and the swallow’s flying low
    And the lads sitting sideways, and singing as they go.
    Home, lad, home, all among the corn and clover
    Home, lad, home when the time for work is over
    Oh there’s rest for horse and man when the longest day is done
    And they go home together at setting of the sun
    Well gone is many a lad now, and many a horse gone too,
    Off all those lads and horses in those old fields I knew;
    There’s Dick that died at Givenchy
    and Prince beside the guns
    On that red road to glory, a mile or two from Mons
    Dead lads and shadowy horses - I see them just the same,
    I see them and I know them, and name them each by name,
    Going down to shining waters when all the West’s a-glow,
    And the lads sitting sideways and singing as they go.
    Home, lad, home . . . with the sunlight on their faces
    Home, lad, home . . . to those quiet happy places
    There’s rest for horse and man when the hardest fight is done,
    And they go home together at setting of the sun
