- Greetings, Programs! Today's #WatchBrando is a Movie Discussion FOR HALLOWEEN 2016 of Why I Think "Exorcist III Is the Greatest Psychological Thriller of All-Time".
[This is the “Censored” version of this video. The uncut edition was released Halloween 2016, but was erroneously blocked thanks to a bot and TH-cam’s ignorance to establish a better content ID system for small, but significant TH-camrs. This “Censored” version took over nine cuts/tries to get it live.
Changes made:

The scene where that nurse walks across the screen immediately followed by a fast walking posessed zombie with those massive human limb shears to cut her head off is absolutely terrifying.
I agree and also when the other nurse was in the detectives house and almost cut off the head of his daughter that was also terrifying.

I just finished the movie about 10 minutes ago, and yeah. That scene got me.
I was lucky enough to meet Brad Dourif at a TGIF’s restaurant when he was filming Deadwood. I told him that it was an honor to meet him as I thought his role as the Gemini in Exorcist III was the scariest character ever on screen. He seemed surprised as of fans don’t mention that role too much. He smiled, said “thank you” and we shook hands. What an actor! What a movie!

This is the movie I first saw Brad Dourif. He was absolutely fantastic in this movie. Even though he went on to star in bigger movies, this is the role I think of when it comes to him.

His character is still one of my favorites.
Blatty was a genius. He began as a comedy writer. This truly is one of the most underrated films, of all time. Great insight in this vid, cheers.
He could truly appreciate Comedy because he really understood Tragedy.
I've also discovered Blatty. Just recently in fact. I was never a fan of the original The Exorcist, but I joined the club with The Exorcist 3 and The Ninth Configuration. Now, I highly recommend the audio book version of The Exorcist narrated by Blatty himself, and his narration is amazing - shows a real talent for expression. His interviews are great too.
Comedians and pulp writers really make for good philosophical writers - I would add him to the same list of greats as Leonard Cohen (comedian turned dark satirical spiritual songwriter) and Charles Bukowski (pulp drunkard with misanthropic views), they share similar traits. I know Nick Cave would like to fit in there too - both song and prose writer, and screenwriter. It's a pity Paul Schrader hasn't done more creative writing, he sure knows the dark pits of the human condition.
Coming back to the film, predating Silence of the Lamps, it's such a pity it didn't receive more praise.
Years ago, I was bored out of my mind while visiting my mother's old folks home. I made a private vow to find the most obscure book in her library and read it. I found a copy of "Which Way to Mecca, Jack?" written by William Peter Blatty from like 1958. It was a comedic autobiography about growing up a Lebanese American in Brooklyn, and then working for the United States Information Agency. An absolute jewel of a book I've never seen brought up anywhere ever. I looked up Blatty years ago and he had gotten heavily into Catholicism before he died. There are so many forgotten masterpieces from the 20th century. That was one of them.
Blatty messed it up even worse Exorcist 2 was helluva lot better I fell asleep renting this trash zzzzzzzzz
How did Brad Dourif not win a Oscar for his mesmerizing performance is beyond me.
Brad is amazing in everything he's done, from "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" to David Lynch's "Dune" to "Lord of the Rings" to his Star Trek Voyager episode "Meld". All great.

FnA , one of the greatest character actors, has been in some of the best movies and TV show of all time in the last 40 years.
The scene in the confession booth still sends chivers down my spine. The voice and dialogue of the killer and the expression of the priest at the end, always gets me.

Yes! The old lady voice describing how she murdered somebody and bled them out, followed by her laughing. Definitely chills every time!

The voice was that of the late great Colleen Dewhurst! Soooo terrifying!
What is so spooky is that it initially sounds like an old woman. Then as it begins to reveal itself the voice becomes more hoarse or coarse, and then more sinister and evil finally leading to the death and screams as the priest is found. This movie while it did have a couple decent "jump scares", it didn't focus on them, instead it would focus certain visual cues and really good musical "pops" to give you a extremely scary fright! Much more effective as well. I wasn't exactly a huge fan of "The Heretic". Except that it showed Linda Blair as an older teenager. For me I a bit younger than Linda was. But she had become a beautiful young lady. Then like many young actresses she got mixed up with drugs, idiocy, and more drugs and I'm sure that was a detrimental factor in her career.
Finally someone said it... this film is a masterpiece. That head nurse was awesome as well as George C Scott

Right. That scene was extremely well executed. Particularly as the camera is set up in a single position with no movement when the white dressed person finally comes out with the scissors. It always scares me.
I was a teenager in Buenos Aires. On the weekend we went to a dance club that used to be on old cinema theater. They removed all the seats and flattened it, the side was the bar. They left the screen and the projector. So when they opened they would show a movie but no sound. Anyway the night I went they were showing this movie. Between drinks I was watching parts. Then while I was watching this scene occurs and I was like what the fuck! The scene was ingrained in my brain and I was weirded the fuck out the rest of the night lol
That was such a masterful scene. Almost the entire sequence is shot in a mastershot from the end of the hallway, changes halfway through, then returns to the mastershot before going in with the zoom at the end. The sheer choreography of the policemen and the nurse was brilliant. For my money, one of the best horror movie sequences ever.
Snowman Asylum Arguably one of the best scenes in horror movies. No fancy VFX needed to create a good scary scene.
Genuinely terrifying, talk about having to be peeled off the ceiling afterwards! 😂

Hey, he became world-renowned as the voice of Chucky, AND was in Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy as a moderately important villain. I'd say that's fair enough.
The exorcist three was refered to as a B movie, back then. It was under-rated. If that's not good enough reason for you, I got a dozy of a theory to go along with it. Here it is, This film starred Greorge C Scott. A man who didn't really "do Hollywood" A brilliant actor, yes, but did he "playball" with liberal Hollywood? Absolutly not. Way back in the day, Scott was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in "Patton". A great movie, I highly recommend it. Well Scott's whole belief about the Oscars was, that they were bullshit. Don't quote me on this but his thoughts were along the lines of, "What are we rewciving awards for, were actors. Its our job, we shouldn't be ararded for simply doing our jobs." and went on about how the academy was basicly not really an authority on what a good performance really is, and they only had the Oscars every year to promote themselves, stroke their own egos, and spew a bunch of liberal propaganda in front of such a large audience. And he was absolutely right, The screen actors guild is a union, unions are for workers, they aren't authoritys on or judges of entertainment. So by giving out Oscars (which back then, and I guess today as well, a lot of Oscar winning movies win because of political motivation) they are basicly judging and giving their own members awards, for doing what they are paid to do. Wow, you showed up to work, and you did your job, You deserve an award" See he was right, look at society today, now everybody gets a trophy. Inturn, we have become weak and have a scense of entitlement. Anyway, back to Scott. Scott I think thought the Oscar for best actor was going to go to someone who actually did "playball with liberal hollywood, but it didn't, he won. The thing is, he was veery outspoken about the academy, and he didn't bother to show up. It was a piece of tin to him, he had said he wouldn't be there, but I think people thought that he might. but he wouldn't accept his Oscar later either. So after that his rolls that he was offered declined rapidly on the quality scale. So my theory is that liberal Hollywood, blackballed mr. scott, as much as they could or maybe just to a degree, but he was diffinately on liberal hollywoods shitlist, and you can put on an academy award winning performance, but if you do it in a movie starrin someone on that list, it aint gonna matter to much, could possibly hurt you. Just a theory, but quite possible, it happens.

One of my all-time favorite horror film lines.
I saw many scenes of this film by "accident" as a kid beeing at my aunts house who had cable tv in the 90's. I remember sweating in the night, sleeping next to me parents bed, terrified after it. I was able to rewatch it this year after almost 30 years... i absolutly love it! A must see for halloween!

That nurse station murder scene is the pivotal event that defined the whole movie.. No other scene in cinematic history could match or beat that jump scare!!!!
If you haven't already watched it, check out "Session 9."
The Entity in the film (known as Simon) will give you chills in its initial simplicity. And its manifestation reminds me of the base plot of Exorcist 3. The final sentence uttered in "Session 9" reminds me that someone was paying close attention to Blatty's historical work...

Im from Chile, i remember my father and i loved horror films, we went to see this film at Nacional theatre wich had a gigantic screen, not like today's, the building itself was kind of huge and scary, more like a temple with big columns, and we saw this film, i remember i was terrified, it was just magnificent, i think also that the film they used to proyect in theatres was different, we were ages away from HD and all that nonsense, but it was just an experience i wish many more could enjoy. And youre absolutely right when you say they dont do horror movies anymore, those days are gone.

Brad Dourif should've gotten an Oscar for this role. Scariest possessed character in the history of film. The depth, the intensity. I learned the "Death, be not proud" Shakespear quote from this film, once wrote it on a postcard in a drunken whim when on a holiday trip and sent it for fun to my girlfriend, friends at home freaked out and thought I was losing it. I thought it was darkly beautiful and profound poetry, still do.
You do know that Seven doesn't have to be bad for Exorcist III to be good, right?
Yeah....why diss Fincher? An actually talented director? Seven is a fantastic film too, in a different way to this but still great!

True, but Seven is against everything Blatty wanted to convey with his writing- if good doesn't win at the end, then what's the point? Not saying that's my opinion, but I get why Blatty didn't want to "waste" the time of people with a depressing story. Personal opinion- Seven is decent.

He's simply comparing this to other 90s movies like Silence of the Lambs and Se7en. And he's got some great points. I watched Se7en only once, it's a good movie but I'd have to agree with him on the points he made. It's not a movie that you're going to enjoy the same way upon re-watching it because the gimmick is sort of used up. This movie however is a different animal when re-watching. It can be just as scary as the first time viewing.
horror directors need to learn more about the fear in silence and how it creates tension better than any generic high string screeeech or drum slam
I'm pretty sure every single film director is already familiar with these concepts. They are 'film' people after all. I'm sure theyve all seen the exorcist or fricken citizen cane. Watched the same crap weve watched, familiar with the same concepts.
I agree, but also think Howard Shore's score in Seven is the right way to do it the 'other' way - it just worms it's way into your head and never lets you relax. Seems a weird choice to me to prove the point when there are literally hundreds of other films that do exactly what you argued and way worse.
I disagree. Silence is good but can be overused and become just a another trope. The Shining (Kubrick's version) to me is one of the scariest movies of all time and that movie is practically all soundtrack. The score is what makes the film so jarring and terrifying.
Its not about using or not using music, its about when to use it and when not to, its the same thing with jumpscares they can actually be effective

Well, a major plot device is the brutal murder of a young Afro-American boy. So, ya know.
EDIT: By the way, that Patrick Ewing cameo is, by far, the worst part of this movie. He was one of the NBA's top forwards around the time this film was released (I think coming off career highs, actually), and it took me right out of the film.

I agree with your sentiment, for the most part, that what's really scary is what's left up to the imagination... subtlety is a lost art.
But man... don't knock Se7en, alright? That's actually a really well-made film, and it perfectly captures the arriving late thing you were harping on about in this same video. What's great is that the killer in that remains a mystery, completely, until he turns himself in. The two detectives arriving at the scenes after the crimes have been committed: excellent.
That's supposed to be more of a thriller that centers around two detectives, anyway, not a scary movie, per se.
I always wondered why this movie gets hate from a lot of people I know personally who’ve watched this. It’s a rare gem and highly underrated.
It's just not very good. Bad pacing, only one character is fleshed out. The duality between kerras and gemini killer becomes annoying very quickly. Because we see the difference but the protagonist doesn't. Only the atmosphere and suspense for some of the film makes it worth a watch.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. One of the few that actually gives me the creeps. Seriously underrated film.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time across all genres. I'm glad this review notices it's greatness, from the acting to each line of dialogue to to tone etc. Everything about this movie is Top shelf goodness.

I have closely observed this movie. With every detail: characteristics, words, clues. I have watched over well 200 times. It so much reminded me when I use to work at a Psychiatric and mental hospital. I now understand the many experiences I encountered with patients. And their many mental ailments they shared with me as testimonials. Gives me chills to realize the many supernatural occurrence! Exorcist 3 Legion big thumbs up 👍👍👍
I appreciate your enthusiasm with regards to this fine film, but the jabs at Seven are completely unfair, different film designed to be at a different pace. It doesn't make it any less effective. It also doesn't make EIII better than Seven, it's simply different and that's by design by another talented filmmaker.
The original novel ‘Legion’ by William Peter Blatty is a great read, better than the movie which is usually the case, well worth the read.
Is it in print again? It was out of print for a long time. The only way to get it was amazon or ebay used and trust me the owners thought they had a bar of gold for sale.
I think Legion's attempted explanation of the Gemeni Killer, like that of Hannibal Lecter, is too gimmicky and facile.
I remember going to the video store and picking The Exorcist III instead The Exorcist just because this actor Joe Anderson once said: "You know what's a really excellent movie? The Exorcist III" And boy he was right!!!!
"It's the smiles that keep us going, don't you think?" Is one of my favorite lines EVER. Just Douriff & Scott locked in a room together: I don't need any better acting than that. I'm really glad I found your video because I've been ranting for YEARS about what a great movie this is.
As a total fan of this brilliant movie and student of film making at the time it came out, I have to say you are so spot on! The whole cast including Jason Patric's father, and script took this franchise to another level. Thanks for creating this excellent video!

I like Brad Dourf very much. He was superb in Mississippi Burning. He was one of the glue that help the film together. True artist. I would put him in same category as Christopher Walken.

I was with you in appreciating this highly underrated masterpiece, until you had to bash Se7en for some odd reason, which is one of the greatest detective/crime dramas ever. The loud, bombastic music in key moments didn't fasten things but appropriately accompanied the gruesome imagery to a T in my opinion. Not a good comparison/or criticism at all. But still, Exorcist 3 is brilliant.

@Sauron Merciful Did someone seriously bash Se7en? Who? Se7en is at the top for David Fincher's films! It scared the holy crap out of me. Every light in the house was on all evening long for a week after I saw it!
I agree. He shouldn't have bashed Se7en to put this one a higher pedestal. It speaks for itself my guy lol. I also don't think he should've bashed The Changeling either, which is another masterpiece.

YES. You get it! This movie is what got me so hooked on Brad Dourif. His performance is amazing. I dont get why people don't talk about this film more.
As much as I love this movie; it's always irked me to know that the inclusion of Father Morning(Nichol Williamson)was a studio decision which distracted from the main story. The novel was focused squarely upon the final redemption of Karras and the erasure of Kinderman's doubts. It didn't have this extra character so the final showdown had much more punch. But I still think it was a very cool film.

I agree with the notion that the scariest movies are the slow burn ones. I'm completely desensitized to the modern horror movie. They are just boring, I literally fell asleep while watching "The Conjuring." Now for instance Jacob's Ladder(which is another underrated Psychological Thriller) is scary and unsettling throughout the entire film.

or "The Haunting" from the very early 1960s. Very creepy indeed.
The original 1989 version of "The Woman In Black" is equally as eerie.

I hear ya. The problem is that 'slow burn' scripts are hard to write and even harder get noticed by the suits that went from controlling 92% of media decades ago to 1OO% of media today. Amateur cinema is the only hope.

Most horribly overrated horror film ever. Its terrible.
Hmmm, subjectively it might be terrible to you, but in now way is it objectively overrated. At all. I'm not sure how you can support the claim this film is overrated, considering it rarely, if ever, receives mention in popular or academic circles about horror films.
@@UltimateNinja-fe6yh I agree with you. But it could have been so much better. A couple of the old infirm people could have been uttering gibberish, like regan minus the swearing, making you wonder if they were possessed or just mental. You could've had a scene where the viewer questions if someone is catatonic, or whether their movements are supernaturally caused. The infirmary scenes dragged on, weren't scary enough and this was the second half of the film.
The exorcism at end was tonally inconsistent with rest of the movie. It didn't know whether it was trying to be a thriller or a horror. First 3/4 it was thriller, then last 1/4 horror. It was a mess.
One of the best horror movies and certainly one of the most underrated.
I thought Hereditary did a good job in building up tension and taking its time. The end was terrifying.

"Hereditary" is one of the most heartbreaking and terrifying films ever made.
Hereditary is one of the scariest movies of all time, and I never want to watch it again because of how miserable it is. Exorcist 3 I'll gladly spread the gospel of and gladly watch it again and again with people who have never seen it.
The genius of Ex.III is how it exemplified how an "idle mind is the devil's workshop"... That the vacant mind can serve as the perfect conduit for demonic possession

Love love this film. And it could be the 1 time I agreed with the studio and the reshoots. Normally I'm not down for studio interference, but they got it right this time. Jason Miller was an INGENIOUS addition. Father mourning rules as well.
Wow Mathew. What a tremendous analysis of this great film. I saw the film opening night back in 1990 and was mesmerized. I've seen it at least 20 times and could watch it another 20. Excellent essay.

I’m a lifelong horror fan ,and I firmly rate this as the best horror movie of all time, such an underrated gem , way over most people’s heads . This and exorcist 1 are the elite of scary films , I have many films I love in the horror genre . The omen amongst others but none had the raw power of blattys work , a true genius who stands head and shoulders above the rest
The scenes between Kinderman and Father Dyer are some of the highlights for me. Such great and funny writing. It makes them both so likable.
Ed Flanders was terrific as well. Liked the reference to Flanders St Elsewhere during the dream sequence.
Also fun fact: The Hall Of Fame NBA Basketball player Patrick Ewing was in this movie as well… I thought that was pretty cool to cast him even though it seems very random to do so
I was living in Maryland during the time this movie was being made. I had a buddy that was employed as a Grip on the production & went down to visit him one evening while they were preparing for the shot of the doors bursting open at the church. They constructed fake doors to prevent damaging the real ones when filming the scene. Also, I was told that, to film the scene with the boy with the rose, after his initial appearance, he was driven on a scooter down a back street in order to arrive in enough time to appear again further down the street. We also saw Blatty sitting in a chair in the middle of the street waiting to begin filming a scene.

Flicks And Movies I was preteen when 3 came out and such a big deal was made about how awesome. Of course it doesn't mean it got awards and stuff. On it's own it stranded out. Great flick.

ok, just finished and I'm exhausted. It was amazing. You know, I don't think I ever gave this movie a chance because the Exorcist 2 was such a torturous pile of nothing I assumed that like most sequels it would be garbage. I was definitely wrong, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm now going to watch the rest of your video to see your analysis.

I saw this movie at the flicks when i was 13. I LOVED IT! At 42, I still love it. I love the scene where George C. Scott is talking to the priest about the carp that is swimming up & down in his bathtub.
Brad Dourif is brilliant as the Gemini killer.
Thanks so much for this awesome breakdown. Saw this as a teen when it first came out and was expecting Exorcist I. I didn’t completely understand all the psychology, great acting/performances and the emotion put into the work, writing and psychological scare that makes up the the work until many years later. Screenplay is a beast & George C. Scott nailed it, in my opinion. Great breakdown and thank you for taking the time to share with us.
Its very strange that preconceptions/expectations BEFORE you see a movie can totally influence your idea at first viewing.

Read the book and waited for a year to see Nicholson in the movie....but was SOOOO disappointed.

Could not get past the ridiculous accents and it totally screwed it for me.

Walked out of theatre before the ending...i just didnt get it.

Also read the book B4 seeing it and was disapointed.
BUT NOW, all these movies are my very favorite ones to watch...over and over again.
I believe reading the book B4 seeing the movie can negatively influence the enjoyment of the movie...BUT reading the book AFTER seeing the movie compounds the enjoyment of both. I read The Exorcist after seeing the movie and they BOTH scared the living crap out of me for weeks/months afterward. Watching a horror movie without any warning/review/reading about it seems to be the best way to really get the most out of it. I saw The Exorcist/The Thing/The Texas Chainsaw Massacre without knowing hardly anything at all about them B4 the fact.When you expect TOO much, you end up unaffected. I hope that my upcoming viewing of this Exorcist 111 movie doesnt become affected negatively due to the EXCELLENT review by Matthew here.

I remember seeing this movie when it was released, in a movie theater, and really enjoyed it.
You really out did yourself with this video. There is such great psychological depth and true pathos in this film and the original. One of the most heart-wrenching scenes, for me, is when Kinderman meets the murdered teenager. "Hey," he says, smiling (happy to see the youth again, but also sad), "I'm so sorry you were murdered," or something to this effect, and the young man has incision marks around his neck. It made me cry when I first saw it; it captured the sadness of when we dream of our dead loved ones.
A really scary and well written movie, Exorcist 3, BUT the first one, The Exorcist, to me is the greatest film of all-time.

I agree, the Exorcist is in my top five favorite films ever. But I think it would’ve been off the charts incredible If they had allowed Regan to use more of the dialogue from the book rather than just profanities. The dialogue is absolutely terrifying
One of the other reasons The Exorcist did so well was because hardly any music was used during the feature. When you look at the situation pertaining to real life such as a boy or a girl being possessed by a demon there's no actual music playing right? William Friedkin wanted that realism as much as possible during intense scenes between reagan and father merrin doing faith battles. Although there was some intermittent music added to the third installment it was not the kind one would expect from a horror film during jumpy scenes or in your face moments. Both films were perfectly executed to bring as much terror as possible to match a real life event in order to provoke your senses. Other films these days rely too much on fast paced bullet action to make a person feel absolute horror in the end along with ridiculous effects. The Exorcist and The Exorcist III didn't use CGI or cell work to create realism, they used good props that were built and harnessed atmosphere the right way with smart lighting, shadows, dim bulbs and archaic machinery to add that grittiness to a person's psyche`. And also last thing... both films held a great deal of dialogue to make each character work well with one another including supporting cast members.
The original feels almost like a documentary, thus making it far scarier for the reasons you mentioned. Great post.

This movie is for the discerning horror fan. Definitely a timeless classic. Multi - genre masterpiece. Kinderman is tough but righteous.

Yep! Completely underrated. We can thank the studio for putting out the ultra-crap 'Exorcist 2' film from John Boorman! "PAHZUUUZUUUUUUH!" LOFL! I think the public were convinced that they would never see a high quality film that referenced "The Exorcist." Blatty did a fantastic job of writing "Legion" and directing this film!

When I first saw your video, I scoffed at the idea that this movie was any good. I saw it on VHS in the 90s when I was younger and hated it. Now as an adult, I purchased the Shout Factory edition of it and it's one of the greatest movies I've ever seen, minus the shitty exorcist sequence at the end. The acting and writing were pretty amazing! The most surprising for me was the directing. Blatty is underrated and its a shame the movie suffered the fate that it did.

Lani Alvarado if you want to see a young Brad Dourif acting his ass off, watch the classic “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”- yes, the one with Jack Nicholson! Brad Dourif plays the young asylum inmate “Billy Bibbit”- he’s charming and disarmingly innocent, and a very tragic character. The entire movie is brilliant, mostly due to individual performances by many excellent actors, including Danny Devito, Louise Fletcher, of course Jack Nicholson, and Mr.Dourif. Watching these two movies really shows the diversity of roles that he is capable of- pure evil and malice on the one hand, and childlike innocence and vulnerability on the other. Honestly, I love each of these movies just as much as the other. I hope that helps! =][=
