A new BluRay is out in the US which includes an assembly of William Peter Blatty’s cut of Exorcist III. It’s a complex patchwork version that gives us a glimpse of just how extraordinary his original film might have been...

The nurse decapitation in the hospital hallway is one of the scariest moments in cinematic history. It unnerves me every time I see it.

I know, right? I've been watching horror films for 3 decades and rarely am I really bothered by something in a movie. I saw Exorcist 3 for the first time this year and that one scene still makes me shudder when I hear ice cubes crackling in a glass.

Whatever else the studios did to the film, George C. Scott's final monologue where he confesses the darkness of his own soul is amazing. I have not seen the director's cut, but it must only suffer for the lack of that speech.

I grew up thinking I was the only one who enjoyed Exorcist III, and then I decided to do a quick research about it and find out Kermode loved it, as a lot of people also do. It's an amazing film in it's own right and an amazing experience - to watch something great but clearly flawed.

Legion is one of my favourite books. The Exorcist III film is also a favourite of mine as far as films go. Such an underrated film, and so many people are unaware of its existence. Fantastic to hear it is being updated to reflect Blatty's original vision. I think I will have to read the book again. P.S. Jason Miller and Brad Douriff are mind-mindingly satisfying to watch in this film.

I love this movie. I'm not sure if the Directors Cut is "better" than the theatrical one. After I read the book I did miss the character of Dr. Vincent Amfortas in the movie. He plays a big part in the brilliant novel and is in some way responsible for the "resurrection" of the Gemini patient. I think he could have had a central part in the movie with his talking to spirits on 'reel to reel' tapes etc.

George C Scott has always fascinated me. He was a great actor. In his later roles he had this tired grizzled look to him like he was either on the brink of tears or violently losing his shit. I could definitely see him just sitting in a dark living room for hours drinking scotch and smoking unfiltered camels.

And I really liked 'Exorcist III'; Blatty's writing and direction (and Brad Dourif's performance) guarantee the chills will seep into your bones. Watched this film first 1989 at Nth Ken Fire Station London..... was the most scariest films I’ve ever seen and still is....the hospital scene where the the killer after a marvellous drawn out hospital nighttime routine quickly crosses the corridor “door to door” with the head choppers in speedy murder chase was spine chilling/ old lady on the ceiling was scary too...all the watch shat their pants ......

RedLetterMedia made a video about this film, then I watched it, it is phenomenal. The writing is excellent (except for the reshoot scenes), George C. Scott is always great, Brad Dourif gives an Oscar-worthy performance, and the editing is outstanding. It’s also surprisingly scary, but it’s not trying to be a true horror movie as much as it is a disturbing, thought-provoking psychological thriller. Only real fault I have with it is how the exorcism happens at the end.

  • @Clay3613

Brad Dourif and Jason Miller in the theatrical cut are just so much more powerful and driven than the original cut.
I do agree that the ending is overkill, but still the original was severely low-key and unsatisfying for a movie.

Mark, there's this film called The Exorcist made in 1973. It's directed by a man called William Friedkin, I think you might like it. I know Mr. Friedkin directed a film called 'Sorcerer' and 'The French Connection', but since I have no interest in things such as wizards, Lord of the Rings and Harold Potter (or the French for that matter) I haven't gone out of my way to see them yet.

Sorry, the original cut is lesser. They needed at least one more scene with the preist they added so he feels more connected - but otherwise, that ending it massively superior. A huge release after a growing tension for both audience and the main character.

I just watched this movie for the first time and I really enjoyed it, but I just though it was a good movie, not all that scary. The reason I enjoyed it is because I sometimes grow tired of modern film making with the abundance of cgi and over the top performances. This had really solid performances and the use of silence throughout set the mood very well.

I've just read Blatty's Legion. It has freaked the hell out of me! It also explained the life story of the Gemini Killer - what he did was evil, but he had his reasons which explain why he does what he does - the roots of his evil. The tragedy of what happened to him and his brother so that he became so evil is a tragedy that shouldn't have happened.... I absolutely recommend the novel. It is entitled Legion (nothing to do with the film with the same title)

Well, somewhat the new cut that Shout did was somewhat worth the watch and liked it but was rather disappointed not that it did not followed the original 1989 shooting script before the Exorcism scene had arrived, so what i did was to do a restructured version of LEGION by following the 1989 script named William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist 1990, which I thought the version I did was pretty much far better and enjoyable in my opinion, but I would say there are people who are going to enjoy this new cut, Shout! did, but, there were scenes not restored in the new cut is where Kanavan's motionless body holds his severed head in his lap and a scene which I thought would've been fine if it was restored where Karras's body is viewed at the Police pathology lab.
