It's ashame that man left this world so soon, I think he left too early. I remember attending a seminar he gave in 1995 when I was very young. He really seemed like an interesting guy. I miss those days. I also attended a seminar that was given by Bill Wallace not too long ago, and I had a blast. We really have to enjoy and learn everything we can from these guys while they're still around. RIP Joe, you will be missed.
Agree. Went to a Joe Lewis seminar in early 80s. Spring Lake , NC that Sensei Johnson had and our School, Sewell Chinese Kenpo participated in. Joe was a great guy. Rip Sensei Joe.
I was told by someone who personally knew Joe Lewis that he accepted the Lord while he had brain cancer so that would mean he's with the Lord and all believers will be able to see him again upon the resurrection of the dead.
Knew the name but never really listened to him speak. And now I know why he was a legend. To think he was impressed by Bruce’s abilities and thinking. Thats says a lot. Awesome footage.
Joe Lewis left this world way too early he was sixty years old at this time, He died August 31, 2012 from Cancer which spread to his left shoulder and hip prior to his death. He was buried at Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery in Knightdale, Wake County, North Carolina. Joe known as the father of kickboxing was one of the greatest full contact fighters to ever live.
The advice Joe gave here was GOLD. E.g. Distancing. Where not to be when kicked or punched. So many people get tagged because they don't have distancing down. Even professionals. They forget I guess. Maybe tired. So they find it harder and harder to stay out of range. Again. I find it odd Joe kept mentioning Bruce Lee (some one that never competed...would make more sense to me to quote another legendary fighter..Mohammad Ali,...though, I don't think the boxers talked much about their thinking/tctics). I'm guessing Joe still thought Bruce Lee had merit in what he was able to understand about movement...even if he was never a competitor. Or Joe would have ignored Bruce. Wouldn't have spent 10 minutes with Lee. Would any one of us choose to spend time learning from some one who never competed or a world champion? Given the choice. in Any sport.
Unlike Lewis, you irrationally limited your opportunities to learn. Why? Well, Lewis did that, too. The first time he met Bruce Lee, Lee chewed on his ear a bit, and Lewis blew him off. Irrationally. He did a show with a sparring partner, and he noticed that his sparring partner was significantly improving. His sparring partner said he was training with Bruce Lee. The rest is history. There are interviews of Lewis talking about Lee -- there is basically reverence in his voice. Bruce didn't want to point "fight" -- and that's what existed back then. Lewis tells the story of Bruce taking two 75 lbs dumbbells and, while standing, slowly stretching them both out in front of him and held them there. He was about 140 lbs. himself. Try doing that with 1/4 of your body weight, let alone over half. Can any UFC fighter today do that with more than their body weight? Maybe not. Lee was special. How many UFC fighters are more efficiently muscled than Lee? None that I know of. Ali's bodyguard has an interview where he shares what happened when he asked to spar Lee. This guy is in the Karate Hall of Fame. He said Lee had his foot kissing his head before his nervous system was able to put his hands up in his standard position. He said Lee told him earlier that he could hit him 4 times for each hit he could put on Lee. After his sparring match, he said that Lee was absolutely right. Bruce did it his way -- he wanted to be an analyst, inventor, teacher, and trainee of what he invented. He did that. Legend. More than one world champion, who KNEW first hand, put Lee as the best of the era -- period. One said he was aware of multiple sparring matches with famous guys, and he said "Lee was untouchable." There are lots of interviews of the masters masters -- they will answer your questions. As to "could Bruce Lee really hurt someone without his effectiveness crumbling" is imaginary nonsense. Relative scrubs do it every day -- it isn't hard at all for those geared to fight. Dime a dozen.
Bruce Lee taught Joe Lewis how to side kick, the one inch punch, how to punch with explosive power behind those punches and other couple of techniques on how to fight more effectively and efficiently which helped him to defeat the top karate and kickboxers at that time. Without Bruce Lee's teachings, Joe Lewis would not have accomplished what he achieved in the sport of karate. Below are some links of videos of Joe Lewis talking about Bruce Lee and the techniques he learnt from Bruce Lee which greatly helped him to improve his fighting styles th-cam.com/video/tEOa13vEcgg/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/-Cg6neMpHXs/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/6BQwM41l24E/w-d-xo.html
He says he 's seen Qi energy work in healing but not in fighting, and talks about energy as it relates to psychology. He dived deeper than we thought he would here. Joe Lewis says he had healing experiences with energy or witnessed them!
Good fighter , but with all these things , it comes at a cost to life and limbs. This is a way to understanding method/s . He fighting could have been done with less life death costs. He was a fighter like a solider in a battlefield who cares less about 'death' they got to suffer.
Joe was such a great communicator. His seminars were popular during the 80's. and 90's.

Didn't Bruce say he would be more afraid of the guy who has practiced one punch/kick a thousand times than the guy who has practiced 1000 one time.

You can only work on principles, and not attributes? Developing attributes such as timing speed coordination and power is what all athletes do.

what year was this ?
2004
Most anamalous thing he says. "I don't like guns, knives, motorcycles or anything that hurts anybody"... From a knockout king, ex jarhead!
"What's so funny?"

A great piece of recorded history. But really, he was full of blag and waffle.
