    Im from Chicago, this guy is good. Most cops, firemen, city workers and italians and irish from the far west side and far south side have the stero typical Chicago accent. If ya want to heart it, walk into any police station in the city and just ask for directions. Or even the west side border burbs like Cicero Berwyn Oak Park etc etc, they all got that classic Chicago accent, its still around, its this in your blue collar neck of the woods. You won't find it in Lincoln Square, Ukrainian Village etc, you WILL find it in Garfield Ridge etc

      Good Call! All the cops and firemen I know talk like that. I'm guessing they picked up that accent from their parents and their high schools.

      I’ve heard it in Bedford park, usually older guys tho. When I’ve moved farther from the city and deeper in the burbs, it wasn’t even a thing. My ma grew up in Stickney and it comes out once in awhile. Instead of that she’ll say dat, the=da, Jewel=Jewels, used to=usta, so on. It’s funny cause she’ll be talkin with her friends and they call her out on it. It’s a damn shame American accents are dying out.

      I'm from Garfield Ridge! Thanks for the shout out man :) moved down south when I was just 7 years old but kept some of the accent because of family.

      I’m from Arlington Heights originally, moved to Florida 10 years ago. Within minutes of talking to someone, they usually guess where I’m from. From midwesterners, they know it’s chicago. From the rest of the country, they think it’s canada lol.

      Good point. Chicago coppers had their own accent probably because of the Chicago accent combined with cop speak like "at which point the officer witnessed the offender exiting the premises and pursued him" .

    Bravo! From a life-long Chicagoan. I noticed, however, that your pronunciation of "been" is a little off. You gave us too much long e sound. It should sound more like "bin' with a short i sound. I love listening to accents, and I can usually tell where someone is from almost immediately. Your Chicago accent is superb. Most people think just replace all your t's and th's with d's, and you sound like a Chicagoan. In some parts of the city, some people still have strong d's for t's, but it's fading. You nailed it.

    I've always described a Chicago or northern Illinois accent as a sore throat. I'm from Rockford Ill, which is near Chicago. And I've noticed that when you are trying to speak coherent with a bad sore throat has a similar way as a ''Chicago accent''.

    This is the most accurate Chicago Accent I've heard on TH-cam. Almost exactly how I talk XD. Too many people on TH-cam end up doing a wisconsin accent for Chicago instead of our actual accent.

    • @narratormatt

      Very cool. For all our benefit, what would you say are the qualities to Wisconsin that people mistakenly slip into Chicago?

      @@narratormatt id say most attribute the Whiney upper Midwest tightness of the lips to Chicago, and they always get the pronunciation of our “A’s” and “O’s” wrong. While Chicago accents are whiney, it’s nowhere near as much as the Upper Midwest accent.

    I'm from Chicago and I do not sound like that. That accent sounds old and a bit exaggerated. People sounded that way in the 60s, or something. I remember the old (60 and older) Southsiders who would say "tree" instead of "three," and they sounded that way, as in the video. For example, "Yeah, let me get tree if them." Also, Northsiders, Westsiders and Southsiders sound different and often-times will use different words. One final thing, I am only referring to true Chicagoans and not suburbanites.

      @@narratormatt I'm from western NY, so all I know is that whenever I've been to Chicago I've been pleasantly surprised to hear the natives (whatever part of Chicago they might be from) sound just like my upstate NY friends and family. I've heard recordings of Ann Landers. She sounded like she just left a Bingo game at a fire hall in Cheektowaga.

      @narratormatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Greg, Great question. What I now know to be called "General American..." I myself wonder where that came from and how it came to be accepted as the standard. Similarly with British accents, the one called RP is the one people tend to lean on, even though it seems to only make up a small percentage of the accents in Britain. Want a research project?

    The stereotypical, comedic interpretation of a Chicago accent is the “Sout side” accent. In innumerable ways, the North side and da Sout side of Chicago are practically two completely different cities with little in common.

    • @narratormatt
      @narratormatt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you find though that the principals
      -hard "r"
      -dipthong-less short o
      apply? Those are my life raft. So say Yes.

    • @jjmalaprop9968
      @jjmalaprop9968 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Haynes Yes, those two principals absolutely apply.
      After watching the video again I recognized that the instructional section probably struck a nerve. You were obviously emphasizing what to listen for. When you read the song lyrics, it was pretty accurate.
      If I were to draw 4 points on the hardly recognizable accent-to-heavy accent spectrum I’d say that the order would be North side accent, your reading of Blackened, South side accent and the SNL “da Bears” skit with the first two grouped closer together and the last two grouped closer together.
      Quick story: someone once asked me “do you say Chi-caw-go or Chi-cah-go?” It was at that moment I realized I said both, and almost certainly a gliding vowel variation as well. Light bulb moment. We don’t sound like the nightly news after all.

    You forget to mention t - th reversal. As in Nort Side, Sout Side. But the real authority on this is not me. You know how the Queen of England speaks perfect English (the Queen's English) by definition? Well , there was one man who spoke the Chicago accent perfectly by definition: The Boss's English. Notice in my ling the way he pronounces the the name of the City, twice in this one minute clip. th-cam.com/video/ZN95zcQlpJY/w-d-xo.html
