Jesus, you nailed it. Felt like I was listening to one of my uncles at a church potluck.

:) Nice! Most people exaggerate the Minnesota accent, but you nailed the subtleness of it!

Twin Cities native here! You've definitely done your research, if a bit more focused on the more North woodsy-style. Only thing I'd suggest for the long "oh" sound is that the "oh" part of the "oh-ah" is a little bit more of a dropped-jaw sound, like what singers do when they need to hit a lower range. Great video!

Not that bad! Coulda mentioned some hockey. All in all, I heard my parents speak this way. Buffalo Minnesota.

MN native here. Not bad. Weird to hear the accent that pronounced coming out of the mouth of someone relatively young. The accent was right, but that strength would be unusual from someone under 50 unless they are from the north woods and rarely leave their small town.
The trick is to tense your cheeks. Keep them really tense when you do your vowels. And try to keep your lips from moving too much as well. The long /o/ is more nasal, reminiscent of the Metropolitan French pronunciation of eau. The long /u/ is also nasally.

A whimsical theory: Do you think part of this cheek and lip tension comes from speaking when outside in the freezing cold?

Great crash course, thanks for this! I'm creating a mountain dwarf character for a D&D game, and didn't want to go with the typical Scottish accent for them.

For that “O” sound, make a mouth like you’re saying “U” but say “O”. That’s the sound. Keep your lower jaw tense.
Honestly the secret is to go outside in the coldest weather you can find (below 0F ideally), stand there for about 20 minutes and then talk through your frozen face. That tense neck and jaw where you’re trying to hold in all your body heat and have a conversation at the same time, that’s exactly where it comes from.

I suspected this! Gives me confidence in the idea that the muffled muscularity of the Russian accent has similar origins.
