I like your very unpredictable flow in your speech. Sometimes a little pause, sometimes a hick up, but always with a smile and excited. Good reviews, thank you!
Wow...the new 2015 MacBook is only $200 cheaper with more than half the horsepower, no ports, and no touchscreen?!? Asus illustrates just how overpriced the new MacBook is.
grahamhg Windows 10 will support 4k plus this laptop isn't THAT heavy for what it does. And a poor battery life, yes, well this isn't really a laptop to take to work in a thin case every morning.
grahamhg Yes, and in the case of the new MacBook you pay for a mobile processor, no touch screen, one USB C port, a universally disliked keyboard... all for just $1300. The logo doesn't even light up. Apple loves your support.
Man this thing has some really good value with a 4k touch screen, good gpu and CPU, 512gb storage and 16 gigs of ram now just have good battery life and macbook design and that would be my dream laptop I only wish they had a simple asus website to buy it from rather than going to a third party site like amazon
Did you try to use the Apple Thunderbolt Display with this device? If not, which device did you use? What can you tell me about the UX501's compatibility with the Apple Thunderbolt Display? Thanks for the informative review!
How heavy is the power adapter? I have an ASUS now and the it is so darn heavy! This one looks heavy too, and with the laptop already at 5lb it might end up really being cumbersome.
I thought it had thunderbolt 3? Did I miss this in the review. I thought about using this for digital audio workshop (DAW). Fantastic review Lisa! You are the guru.
Lisa, when doe you think that this laptop will be updated with Broadwell processors? I noticed you said that the upgrade won't be very big. However, do you recommend waiting?
Could you review the new 2015 Alienware 15? Quite a bit has changed since your Alienware 18 review, and it'd be nice to see your opinion on it, especially with the Graphics Amplifier.
Abinash Shrestha Asus has the ROG equivalent called the G501. Although it's not a touchscreen IPS but still 4K native resolution. It also has a faster 4GB VRAM for the 960m card, versus the UX501's 2GB. Thus costing slightly more.
Are Asus laptops reliable? I currently use a 7 year old Gateway and it has been pretty reliable so I dont want to pay extra for big respected brands like HP, Dell, etc. I plan to keep my new laptop for 7 years or more lol
+Joe Antonio I have an older Asus laptop model from 2011, and I'm currently still using it. I've loved it to death but sadly I'm looking to replace and upgrade because it has very weak plastic hinges. One which has blown. What I like about this one is the lack of the shitty hinges, other then that mine has been very dependable.
I love your videos, but Id like to give a personal suggestion: From now on do say a few words about the internal DACs of the laptops when talking about audio. This information is a bit difficult to find and manufacturers often hide this detail, and no reviews about talk about it! As you said the audio is bad and get headphones the first question that came to my mind was would it be able to drive my fancy audiophile headphones? or will it need something external?
***** Well, I'd rather have a GPU that can actually play games, and I'd rather not spend an extra $1000. I'm only 18 years old and I can't just throw my money around like that, even though I have $6000 right now.
Mr Mike Most chromebooks don't have strong CPU's nor a dedicated GPU ( I don't know of any) and most don't even have more than 4 gigabytes of RAM. They are also build cheaply, therefore you can't compare it to chromebooks, which btw have no professional software available.
***** I'm studying computer science (bsc honors, going into second year) and my laptop needs to have very fast CPU and GPU for working with Android Studio's emulator, and for developing games in Unreal Engine 4 (along with handling gaming at 1080p when I want to have some fun). I can't just use a weak macbook air, and if a macbook pro had at least a GTX 960m and was at least $500 cheaper, then I'd consider it. But, since I'd rather not waste the money I worked hard for, I will stick to simply getting this asus computer. Although, I still have until September to make up my mind so I'm not in any rush.
hello. I just purchased one of these about 2 days ago. I really like it. Its very sturdy and powerful. But none of my programs (autocad, Adobe, Sketchup, Maxwell, etc...) work with windows 10. And, to be honest, windows 10 is awful in my opinion. I have been trying to find an answer as to whether or not I can install windows 7 without any major compatability issues. Do you know if this is a possibility?
Would you recommend this machine for a graphic designer? I am concerned about what I have read and what you mentioned about the color accuracy of the display. Can you recommend any machines with comparable specs and thin/light weight portability with a 15.6 inch display, 16gb ram, i7, ssd, other than the Macbook Pro, for graphic designers? I'd prefer a glossy screen, doesn't have to be touch. It is a challenge finding the right machine. I am disappointed to read about the color accuracy being off on this one.
Pretty sure im going to go with the macbook pro.. I really like the asus but the poor battery life and the glossy screen seem like it will cause too much problems for me down the line.. the pro is expensive.. but at least it will be reliable for at least 4years?
Would you recommend this over a Dell XPS 15? I am mostly concerned with battery life, since I do a lot of things on Photoshop and Ableton. Other than battery life, which notebook preforms better?
Alright I'm looking for a great college laptop. I'm not a fan of Macs so I've been look at Asus and Lenovo products. Any advice as to which one and which specific model to get based of of research and/or experience? I would really appreciate the help!:)
Great review! This helped a lot when deciding to buy this laptop. Is there any way to enable the Fn key so I don't have to do Fn+KEY to change the volume, brightness, etc? I just want to hit one button without having to press the Fn key. I've looked all over the web but nothing seems to work for this model laptop.
What would you recommend getting, this or the 13inch one? I'm stuck between the two, mainly because if theres not much difference ill get the cheaper option lol I need it mainly for web browsing and video editing.
+Hayley Robinson Get the version with the 6700HQ which i think is this 15.6" version, also good for gaming, cuda cores for video rendering, 45w i7 for video editing and bigger screen for more productivity.
is the keyboard backlit? does it come with ready wake (powers up with lid is opened automatically)? Also, which budget laptop (under $800) comes closest to this in specs/performance/looks? please help. thanks in advance.
Should i go for ux501 or g501? If there is no different in them im going for ux501. If there is a different between it please tell me what is the different and what is the better choice.
i have ordered an Asus K541u laptop in dubai. as my sister's bf works there. it went on sale lastweek and it was the last day of sale that time and was also the last item. i duno if i can ask a review..or even your thoughts on its specs, mainly: 15.6" FHD display intel core i7 skylake-u 6600 8GB of ram 2GB geforce 920MX
Tabesh Ahmadi lol. it's not what you think bro. lmfao. actually, she and her bf offered it to me. the reason being that Php26k here in the Philippines, you only get a core i3 and for the same price converted to AED, you already get a high end laptop. or something with decently high specs. the guy said it's on sale so they gave me a catalogue of available laptops. took me long to decide, not knowing the sale was gonna end soon. i was lucky that on the last day of sale, that particular model was also the last item. so that's that. opportunity came knocking man. who am i to refuse? hehe 😁😂😀

I was targetting the Y5070 but i bought this one instead cause it was cheaper here in the philippines, has the same basic specs and I love it. Do you think I made the right choice? UX501 over Y5070? I dont have 4k resolution but matte.
Nineshadow I think he has the FHD UX501, which is cheaper. The Y50-70 sold in most vendors in the philippines is the UHD version, which is more expensive.
I actually dont have a need yet for UHD. My uses are for .Net develpment, Gaming, and studying of 3d modeling and game development the screen seems sufficient for me. the Y5070 i was targetting if I could remember wasnt uhd either (not sure). The best one I could find has the same basic specs as my UX501. Y5070 - Php70k (same base specs as ux501) UX501 - Php53k G501 with gaming mouse and headset - Php60k
in any case, the UX501 is a pretty good choice, although I'm worried about the RAM of the notebook. I hear the FHD version only has 4gb onboard, which allows for 12gb ram.
it has 8GB Ram. I can upgrade it to 16gb (forgot the brand of ram) I can upgrade the 1TB HDD to 250GB Samsung Pro Sata for around 10k but, i feel that the speed is still sufficient for my needs. maybe ill try them after the warranty. For games, I dont have any high graphics game yet, and my fave online games are S4 League and Robocraft which doesnt seem to be that demandiing.
Hello, can I ask you question related to this Zenbook. If I want to play game and also record the game and commentary at the same time. Would this laptop be my option for the gaming/recording/video-making laptop? My Macbook Pro 2012 can't handle any of that so I am looking for some other thing. Could you help me with this question? Thank you so much.
this asus and the new dell xps 15 are by far the best windows laptops in my opinion. aside from the high end gaming laptops witch is extremely expensive.
hey Lisa @ MTR will you be reviewing the updated model (UX501VW) of this with skylake and the USB c port would like to know how much better it is then this model.
Im looking for a gaming/work laptop, will this do the job? I liked the specs of the NX500 but too much money, if i am to spend the 1500 dollars on this, will it be worth it? Thanks
trilingualkid it's personal taste, some people really like it, other don't. I didnt find it great but got the UX303 and its actually really nice. I love the design as well as the metallic touch. Fingerprint magnet though.
I love your reviews Lisa, could you please review the new lenovo thinkpad E series, especially the E431 and E440, there aren't any decent reviews about them on youtube or on the web, i've checked your website too but theres the old versions would really like to know if E440 has durable metal hinges im confused as to which one to buy between E440 and L440
Would love to see the new Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 14 (with broadwell, gt940m and digitizer) reviewed. Possibly even a smack down between this and the Lenovo!
Does it come with a 1080p screen? I don't see the point of having 4K on a 15", I'd rather everything ran faster. Games run much faster on 1080p. I know I could run them in 1080p, but i'd rather the screen was natively a 1080p.
This looks like a great Windows laptop. I have always liked the Asus Zenbook. For $1500.00 that looks like a amazing deal. I use to have the first generation but ended up selling because I needed money :(
How does this compare with the MacBook Pro retina 13 and 15 inch? I had never had an MacBook should I get this? I do a lot of photo editing and some video editing. I play games on my pc and that's all. But it's 5 years old and I want something compact and good. Will the asus be expensive in the long run thinking about virus programs?
+calis krit video editing for macbook pro 15 is the best because of the codec. it will export fast and run very smoothly. For photo editing, totally no problems for mac.
Hi there, interesting review, I thought if you could explain this whole relationship on the variants, of this model, I see one with 12GB DDR4 2133 MHz SDRAM, OnBoard Memory 8 GB , 1x DIMM socket what does that actually mean? does that mean it could be potentially almost 20 gb of ram or just under? I dont get it, I mean its not DDR4 but can someone explain that? I am referring to the skylake version
The M.2 slot was mentioned but I listened over and over (right about the 5 minute mark) but can't tell if the wireless card uses it OR is their an available M.2 slot to use for a second HD. Which is it? Anyone??? I have the machine but really don't want to take it apart just to find out, I'd rather know ahead of time. It's a great machine by the way! Games pretty well and the Samsung NVMe PCIe SSD is fast and benchmarks VERY well (like 1700Mbps) but honestly and considering the large speed gap between this beast and regular (current) AHCI SSDs, it surprisingly is not noticeably faster than my regular SSDs in day to day operation such as boot speed and most program launching. It boots quick but no quicker than my other laptop with similar specs and a Samsung 850 or 840 SSD. The HD does have a great deal to do with boot speed and program launch so needless to say, I was a bit let down.
I like your very unpredictable flow in your speech. Sometimes a little pause, sometimes a hick up, but always with a smile and excited. Good reviews, thank you!
Does anyone know what microphone Lisa is using? It's visible at 21:00.
It's official - Lisa goes to the gym a lot!

Wow...the new 2015 MacBook is only $200 cheaper with more than half the horsepower, no ports, and no touchscreen?!? Asus illustrates just how overpriced the new MacBook is.
grahamhg mac is still overpriced.
grahamhg Windows 10 will support 4k plus this laptop isn't THAT heavy for what it does. And a poor battery life, yes, well this isn't really a laptop to take to work in a thin case every morning.
grahamhg how do people buy macs?
grahamhg Yes, and in the case of the new MacBook you pay for a mobile processor, no touch screen, one USB C port, a universally disliked keyboard... all for just $1300. The logo doesn't even light up. Apple loves your support.
grahamhg nevermind douche bag. my fault for asking.
WHOA, this matches the higher end version of the Retina Macbook 15 in many ways while being a thousand bucks less. Impressive stuff from Asus here.
you still have the best reviews on laptops
Sydney AU
Man this thing has some really good value with a 4k touch screen, good gpu and CPU, 512gb storage and 16 gigs of ram now just have good battery life and macbook design and that would be my dream laptop I only wish they had a simple asus website to buy it from rather than going to a third party site like amazon
This helped so much! I'm new to PC's and was debating between this and the dell xp-15. Definitely know where I'm going now.
2:00 "And I go to the gym.... ALOT"! LMFAO anyone else get a bit scared there with the way Lisa said that line haha, nice review as always!
lisa why have you never done razer blade?
Thank you for making this video! I think I've found my dream laptop
Lisa, I'm really confused about how this relates to the Zenbook NX500. That one seems to be essentially the same laptop, but for $1100 more!?
Did you try to use the Apple Thunderbolt Display with this device? If not, which device did you use? What can you tell me about the UX501's compatibility with the Apple Thunderbolt Display?
Thanks for the informative review!
Thanks Lisa, great review.
How heavy is the power adapter? I have an ASUS now and the it is so darn heavy! This one looks heavy too, and with the laptop already at 5lb it might end up really being cumbersome.
Would this be a good architecture laptop? Going to be running Autocad, revit, sketchup, etc.
Great question, just what I wanted to know for exactly that reason. Thanks for the answer Jared :-)
I thought it had thunderbolt 3? Did I miss this in the review. I thought about using this for digital audio workshop (DAW). Fantastic review Lisa! You are the guru.

I can't wait to see the review for the UX550VE.
Could you review the new 2015 Alienware 15? Quite a bit has changed since your Alienware 18 review, and it'd be nice to see your opinion on it, especially with the Graphics Amplifier.
MSI GS60 VS UX501 OR G501 SMACKDOWN PLZZ!!
Abinash Shrestha Agree! Although the GS60 Ghost is beast!
Kenneth Ryan does asus provide various version of ux501?
Abinash Shrestha Asus has the ROG equivalent called the G501. Although it's not a touchscreen IPS but still 4K native resolution. It also has a faster 4GB VRAM for the 960m card, versus the UX501's 2GB. Thus costing slightly more.

yes it is even good for editing 4k videos

This is my dream laptop! I'm probably going to sell my dell to get it.
***** Macbook pro is like $1000 more expensive, and the GPU is much slower than the GTX 960m which makes it too slow for gaming.
***** Because it costs $1000 dollars more and has inferior specs. Unless you actually love OSX it's a no brainer.
***** Well, I'd rather have a GPU that can actually play games, and I'd rather not spend an extra $1000. I'm only 18 years old and I can't just throw my money around like that, even though I have $6000 right now.

MobileTechReview Love your reviews! Quick question, no USB 3.1 Type-C?
vs. HP Omen 15 please!
how's the gaming performance?
So for those of us who are graphics professionals what would you suggest.
get it! you won't see the difference
That's what we all have been waiting for !!!!! A true Macbook pro alternative !!!
Can you do a review of the Lumia 640 if you have time? I really want your opinion on that phone
Hey Lisa. What do you think about Asus K501Ux-WH74? It cost only $950. I wonder if something is wrong with it. Could you please review it?
best female reviwer I've found for sure.
Do you know how many external displays it can handle?
hello. I just purchased one of these about 2 days ago. I really like it. Its very sturdy and powerful. But none of my programs (autocad, Adobe, Sketchup, Maxwell, etc...) work with windows 10. Heyyyy how is the fan working for you on this machine! ! Too loud?
Just found this for $900 on amazon. Deal of the day.
The Breakfast Bros glossy screen wtf? Speakers at base? Nooooooo.......don't need to hear or see anymore.
Did you end up finding a new laptop for graphic design? I'm looking as well and I'm debating between this and the MacBook Pro 15..
+TingTing Unfortunately not yet. I am waiting for holiday deals. Hopefully soon!
+mlorb1281 haha good idea, I'll be patient as well.. Good luck!
+TingTing im having the exact same problem choosing from this between macbook pro 2015 model.
did u u guys pick anything yet? let me know
Pretty sure im going to go with the macbook pro.. I really like the asus but the poor battery life and the glossy screen seem like it will cause too much problems for me down the line.. the pro is expensive.. but at least it will be reliable for at least 4years?

I read lots of negative consumer reviews on the internet. They mostly complaint about the fan. Is that true?
after seeing this, i'm set on waiting for the Dell XPS 15 with infinity display =)
thanks Lisa!
Would you suggest using this laptop for someone looking to use software like SPSS and R? If not, which laptop would you suggest?
I am looking for a replacement for my MacBook Pro retina 15 for 4K video work and photography. Is this it? ;)
what would you go for now?
The XPS 15 is £400 more expensive at the moment. for the same SPEC...is that really worth the build quality?
The new 2017 XPS 15 looks really promising with its 4K screen option.
long term review pleasee
What would you recommend getting, this or the 13inch one?
I'm stuck between the two, mainly because if theres not much difference ill get the cheaper option lol
I need it mainly for web browsing and video editing.

MERZS Off the top of my head, the g501 has a 4gb GTX 960M instead of the 2gb in the ux501.
ahh ok ty
MERZS My g501 has a matte screen, but it seems like the ux501 has glossy touch screen.
***** really? g501 then cuz im not a fan of glossy display laptop but i like the 4k on the g501. thanks for responding
i have ordered an Asus K541u laptop in dubai. as my sister's bf works there. it went on sale lastweek and it was the last day of sale that time and was also the last item. i duno if i can ask a review..or even your thoughts on its specs, mainly:

How about the Smackdown of the HP Spectre x360 and the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro?
I was targetting the Y5070 but i bought this one instead cause it was cheaper here in the philippines, has the same basic specs and I love it. Do you think I made the right choice? UX501 over Y5070?
I dont have 4k resolution but matte.
Ernel Brian Pineda How the hell was the y50 more expensive, lol. I'm considering buying a Lenovo Y50 ATM and a UX501 would cost $800 more.
Y5070 - Php70k (same base specs as ux501)

in any case, the UX501 is a pretty good choice, although I'm worried about the RAM of the notebook. I hear the FHD version only has 4gb onboard, which allows for 12gb ram.

Would this laptop be my option for the gaming/recording/video-making laptop? My Macbook Pro 2012 can't handle any of that so I am looking for some other thing. Could you help me with this question? this asus and the new dell xps 15 are by far the best windows laptops in my opinion.
aside from the high end gaming laptops witch is extremely expensive.
is this good for gaming
+jctv 1234 good enough
Chandler Campbell can it handle the crew
I'm not familiar with the requirement of that game, but a 960m can handle basically every game to some degree
Chandler Campbell yes the 960m is a powerful GPU it can handle any game.
hey Lisa @ MTR will you be reviewing the updated model (UX501VW) of this with skylake and the USB c port would like to know how much better it is then this model.
Can you review the new ZenBook Pro with the new screen and internal hardware? No one else has done it
Dave Lee did
How about a review of the UX410U zen book? There isn't a good in English yet! it is a 14 inch.
with respect
your review is perfect and amazing
thanks
any plan to review the UX501VW version?
How's the performance of the trackpad compared to xps 15?
Does it work well with debian linux?
Hello, I was wondering if you have any suggestions for a college student in the market for a new laptop. Thank you.
Im looking for a gaming/work laptop, will this do the job? I liked the specs of the NX500 but too much money, if i am to spend the 1500 dollars on this, will it be worth it? Thanks
Great review thank you
Hey Lisa ,
Can you do a review on the Asus t300 chi
Thank you
hi could you please do zenbook pro 501 long term review,

hmmm this or the surface pro 4?? I know they are different but can the see face pro keep up with a big laptop like this performance wise?
I find asus aluminum shell look cheap :/ maybe its the pattern swivel
trilingualkid it's personal taste, some people really like it, other don't. I didnt find it great but got the UX303 and its actually really nice. I love the design as well as the metallic touch. Fingerprint magnet though.
I love your reviews Lisa,
could you please review the new lenovo thinkpad E series, especially the E431 and E440, there aren't any decent reviews about them on youtube or on the web, i've checked your website too but theres the old versions
would really like to know if E440 has durable metal hinges
im confused as to which one to buy between E440 and L440
Is this the WH74 model? I'm curious if it has a sata connector in addition to the m2. I'd like to add a second drive if i buy one.
Would love to see the new Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 14 (with broadwell, gt940m and digitizer) reviewed. Possibly even a smack down between this and the Lenovo!
I didn't want to watch the whole thing. Is there any part where she talks about the quality of the keyboard and the typing experience?
+JordanicusRex She said it was "OK".
I use to have the first generation but ended up selling because I needed money :(
you should review the new skylake version, they fix the screen color issues!
How is this laptop so thin with a gtx960m? I thought the 960m is pretty bulky.
+calis krit I"m also looking at the MacBook Pro 15
+calis krit video editing for macbook pro 15 is the best because of the codec. it will export fast and run very smoothly. For photo editing, totally no problems for mac.
+Kelvin Teng Because of the codec? U wot m8?
Hi do you have strange buzz sound when you take this computer close to yours ears? Is it okay if it does it?
Wow, really great value!
can you do the Asus g501!!?? I'm thinking about buying it
how good is this at editing 4k video?
Where can we buy it? It's sold out everywhere :[
Could you do a comparison with the Asus nx500?
returning my Dell xps 15 4k, is this Asus the best alternative to it? or is there something better with 4k and Windows? thanks
Lisa I know it might be a little funny but is there any chance you review estar takee 1 3D holographic phone?
Do you know if the 256gb model of this notebook uses a SATA or PCIe ssd?
awesome video!
IS THIS LAPTOP IS GOOD FOR 3DMAX & REVIT OR NOT BECAUSE I THINK TO BUY
did u notice the ASUS logo under the screen ??? The last "S" letter disappeared
+Leu MacThanh It's because of the angle of the camera I believe.
Have you got your hands on an ASUSPRO B9440UA yet?
Is it good for 4k video editing?
I guess I have to get this after watching your video!!!
I wonder where is the air intake for this laptop?
I know Im asking for much but this would have been a great 14'' or if you really push it a nice 13.3''
I have a problem in the system where the image is too small looked like Photoshop and tango
Is this coming to the UK
Jordan Taylor I expect it will come to the UK.
+MobileTechReview is a Lenovo yoga 3 pro for gaming ?
