This is genuinely the best story telling I've ever seen in any media. It's insane. Especially with the part about Amy. You know the entire story with her just from hearing 2 sections of audio. God, Silent Hill 2 is so amazing. Thank you for playing like you do.
As far as I know the main theory is that silent hill 2 takes place during a time without cult activity. However without any activity the otherworld is unable to manifest so instead it manifest stuff for specific people. Each manifestation can look different to another person Alternatively they could just not see any. That's why the little girl is safe in silent hill as the monsters don't manifest for her. Maria is a manifestation for James meant to torture him by giving him something close to his wife but not her. It's speculated that others can't see her.

We see that she has her own sense of identity, feelings, fears, etc. But she also has very distinct and unique memories from Mary (when she thinks “Laura would love this” and then immediately follows up with “Who am I talking about?”. I think it’s fair to say that Maria is a unique amalgamation of Mary, James, and her own personality.
One of the strangest bonus campaigns in gaming history. It’s technically impressive they made this seemingly within 3 months, but it’s just such an enigmatic premise to explore the origin story of a manifestation. Even stranger is that it’s executed pretty well. There’s a lot that could have gone wrong with elucidating arguably the most mysterious character in the game, yet they dodged those major pitfalls while still contributing to the game’s overarching story.
It’s even weirder when you think about it. Almost everything in SH2 is a manifestation of James’s, including Maria. Ernest likely is as well. So basically, two different creations of James’s mind interacted without him ever knowing at all. Lol
@@Justmemyguy Remember the vestiges of the first game, like the Halo of the Sun in the final room with Pyramid Heads? Or the parts of Eddie's and Angela's experiences bleeding thru to his? There's a _little_ overlap with other experiences. In my mind, Ernest is _some_ kind of ghost that can have awareness of people the town reacts to, and Maria can perceive him only because she's a similar creation. What you're looking for, would more be the letters James saw on the way to the Historical Society.

I think Ernest is just a Silent Hill ghost who ended up meeting Maria, who's James' creation, but Ernest himself isn't James' creation, he's just a thing that exists independently of him in Silent Hill.

Strange little tale! We got to see and learn more about Maria....but.....what happened in that Haunted Mansion? Did Earnest kill Amy? The gloves on the table at the end seemed possibly bloody. Earnest says Amy fell. What was the white liquid going to do? What killed Earnest? Unfortunately we all know how Maria's story ends if you got her ending of the Silent Hill 2 game. Her and James walk out to his car and she coughs. She is going to develop the same disease as Mary.

Maria DLC sawt out prelude to Silent Hill 2 Remake, called Born from a Wish, before the events with James happened. This is my interpretation and opinion about Maria. Maria went to Silent Hill before James started his search for Mary. This was intentionally arranged by an UNKNOWN god-like entity, with power of psychic persuasion and manipulation. The entity is connected to the summoners of the cult "Order of the Sun". Maria actually was initially from the town of Silent Hill after leaving to another town. She has a distinct liberated personality in contrast to conservative nature of Mary, although has striking resemblance to facial feature (but not body figure, it is quite different). They seem to look alike. In Silent Hill 2 DLC: Born from a Wish, Maria was drawn back to Silent Hill just to find that her gun and knife was appropriate from the monsters surprisedly found there. She helped Ernest Baldwin to find a "white liquid" from Blue Creek Apartment to supposedly, and miraculously bring her dead daughter back, Amy. She found herself doubting and delusional about the idea of resurrection. After undergoing such terror, and finding out that she was speaking to a ghost, she playfully hinted to shoot her brains out. But, the ghost ask her to be careful about James, that he is a danger. She pursues to find him, otherwise. I believe the summoned UNKNOWN god-like entity by the cult is preparing James, and Maria is one of the object to start this test. I also have my interpretations and opinion to Silent Hill 2 remake (this is it): The game is supposed to be about the UNKNOWN god-like entity, whether it be an ALIEN or a summoned demon (like Satan or Lucifer), with very powerful abilities like manipulate living body, control ghosts, heavy fog during day, open and close a pocket dimension, create disease, influence people by psychic telepathy, and others. The entity presumingly residing in Toluca Lake (history of mysterious disappearances). This entity intentionally made Mary sick, after witnessing the scene of their memorable date near a gazebo-type structure adjacent the lake, to eventually fall James to despair. After a significant amount of time fighting the disease, James killed Mary because he doesn't want her suffer too much agony. James even told Mary that he killed her because he's angry and wants to return his previous life, a GUILT James is trying to overcome because he loves her truly. This interest the unknown entity and made a way to TOY with James mind/psyche. The entity made a way for other characters like Maria, Laura, Eddie, and Angela. Each of them has significance to James state of sanity. BTW, the unknown entity, somehow, revealed its existence by giving away two clues, where there were two endings (considered as joke endings), the dog operator and UFO (unidentified flying object). The dog operator is an insult, that the unknown entity controlling James mind involves allot of dog fights, blood spills and amounts of bones. I could imagine the entity laughing its heart-out every time he struggles to kill them. To solidify this, the entity even made three people in game that actually resembles James body lying dead or sitting in a couch covered head, dead. And the UFO, literally saying UNIDENTIFIED, because this entity has no intention of telling James what REALLY is happening to him. To note, the pyramid-head man is mockery of "God made man with His image and likeness" (ideal and strong - great sword is awfully heavy), also that, a PYRAMID is always associated with ALIENS, manipulation, resurrection (rebirth) and third eye. Another clue I found was about the cult of "the Order of the Sun" in other Silent Hill games mythology has left a clue in SH2R. The Seal could be found in Room 106 Jacks Inn and in Toluca Prison. One of it is called the "SILENT seal of the Sun behind the HILLS" (the other is different, and these symbols are not made-up, these happened in reality, reference to forbidden necromantic book called Grimoire of the dead). This seal (in the game) is about the unknown god-like entity of the cult in Silent Hill. Seems like the cult, decades if not centuries ago, summoned the entity that now resides in Toluca Lake. To sum these, this unknown god-like entity's real motive to James is for himself to commit SUICIDE. This entity tested James by placing characters in his way to find Mary, like Maria. She was supposed to make entity redeemed of his mischievous actions. That there was a way to correct this entity's manipulation, in a mockery kind of way. Maria is like Mary, but different in many ways. Other characters also suggest insult to James mind, like Eddie, who kills anybody out of nothing, that his personality progresses from apologetic to insane, to point that he doesn't care if nobody stops him. To mock that James is murderer, not justified for killing Mary. And Laura, mockery of a child, who disrespects him. To mock that James do not deserve a child. Also Angela, who cares about her relatives, her mama, father and brother, which entails a feeling of disregard and disrespect to other person feeling. James didn't consult other opinion if Mary should be killed out of love. The UNKNOWN entity's primary motive is to KILL James out of SUICIDE. That he SINNED and doesn't deserve to live. Probably the best ending was for James to move on. Signified by the letter Mary gave to the nurse after her demise. Maria's survival was the most difficult ending according to players who made it. Maria is a sense that James accepted Mary's death and willing to move on. Well, there was another ending (bad ending) where he just pulls the car's gas on to speed at maximum, literally died by suicide drowning. He could not accept Mary's fate.
Silent Hill especially the Fog World & Otherworld are s type of purgatory and Hell the demon / god over the place that has been summoned is samael or satan and in scripture satan had the keys to hell and would torture the souls that had sinned when they came to hell and he would accuse them or their deeds. Obviously there are layers to SH and mysteries as to exactly what is going on and where but it is apparent these concepts exist and James was being tortured until he delt with his guilt and come to terms with what he did and in SH Remake it’s basically James had been here repeating the cycle over and over in this hell. So I think a lot of what you was saying is bang on.
I'm guessing when the game begins. That is when she is manifested from James mind by the town. She as a manifestation is implanted with memories and a padt life that never existed.

Yep, you're totally right. Maria is a manifestation of James's mind. That explains the name of this extra scenario "Born From A Wish". So, basically you're playing as a manifestation without any previous memories as well as Ernest who is apparently dead which makes things even more unsettling.

We never get any definite answer about what Maria is, but we know this much: She is a good and kind person.
I feel like to better understand Maria is definitely to better understand Mary since that’s who she directly stems from in James’s mind.
