    I am so glad that steam train fans are still busy with trains. At age 10 I was afforded a chance to actually drive a steam train to a wye and back to the station in Calumet Michigan. My friend Ronnie Toupin and I along with Mr. Norman LaBonte, the train maintenance boss operated a steam engine belonging to the Duluth south Shore and Atlantic with one passenger car and one baggage car about 3 miles. It was the most thrilling moment in my young life. It still may be despite a 25 year trooper career, a military tour, and several years trying cases as a prosecutor.

    Great to see the holy grail of steam locomotives back on the rails: The UP class 4000, representetd by 4014, is a hallmark of rail history and every true trainspotter will be pleased by this sight. Now get her back into steam !!!!! Keep up the good work !

    UPRR better give 4014 a nice mile long train that she was meant for. It'll be great to see her in service again!

    Fantastic--fabulous coverage. I spy myself at 12:02--I hope my being down there didn't detract from your shot. No kidding about it not being so easy to get out there and chase on public transit--I had to leave my room before 4 AM to get to Covina by 7, and I ended up taking seven bus trips, two subway trips, and one Metrolink trip over the course of the day. It was worth it, though.

    • @singwith
      @singwith  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I don't mind at all. How's your shot of 4014? I left home at 10PM and got Covina at 1AM. I was pretty lucky that the last two section of chasing, Metro 194 came right in time and able to beat the train from Walnut to Pomona.

Did you realise at 14:00, the rear loco has the same number of wheels composition of 4014 engine (4-8-8-4). Quite curious, or they intented to do it by purpose? Vegas Pro running?

    Wouldn't it just be fantastic if when this badass is back on the rails some UP representative says," oh, we also have an ALCO 9000 class that we wrote off as scrapped, but wasn't, and we've been restoring her at a top secret location and she'll be back on the rails in a year or two"?

    Just found out today that the Union Pacific steam crew in their search for a big boy seriously considered the4017,but it was turned down by the National Railway Museum in Green Bay Wisconsin because The museum didn't want to give it up. It is in such good condition it looks like all it needs is the head of steam and it would be ready to go.

      Green bay railroad museum is a tricky one. Yeah, the locomotive is in possibly the best condition, but the actual museum was built around her and the other exhibits as they're all on isolated tracks. The only locomotive that has ever come out of there was the A4 Dwight D Eisenhower, and even then it was a very difficult job. The big boy would be nearly impossible to remove without having to demolish the building, and as it is one of their main attractions, they decided to keep it there and go for 4014 instead

    you can just hear the groaning of that monstrous engine on those tracks. such a marvelous piece of American ingenuity. I love these engines. FAR more than the current generation. Shows a time of progression... nowadays it's just stagnant mediocrity that infests the train-yards. no progress... Or not enough to really congratulate. :/ But that horn though

      I love these old locomotives as well. The simple reality, however, is that reciprocating steam locomotives are very inefficient, and cannot be made more efficient. It's a matter of physics. So, we honor the past but look to the future.

    She is the Titanic of the steam locomotives. She will get a new life. Born in the twilight of steam era. Reborn in the time when America can embrace the past and that the now generation will work to keep her around. She is the epitome of the grand old steam locomotives. Union Pacific has recognized the value of bringing back to life the age of steam. Not only is this locomotive the ultimate of the steam era, yet she will do alot to increase Union Pacific's public relations.

    If challenger can pull 143 railcars uphill it must be mind boggling what big boy can do. I hear tbey can pull a set of c a rs 5 1/2 miles long up Sherman Hill without cracking a sweat .They must demonstrate this behemoth to nowadays generation sream locos aint no joke.

    What they should do is hook the whistle up to one of her air tanks, keep the tank charged from the diesel, and let BigBoy lead the pack on the way home.

      The whistle was hooked uup to air on these short trips. It didn't sound great, but was better than nothing! While one loco could move 4014, to be extra cautious, 4 locos were there for braking. I suspect the 10 hoppers, and all the hose, was being used as an air reservoir?

    So... the SD40-2 hauling the train with the caboose and boxcar marked the last time (or only time) the UP ever traveled on this line?

    Hey, thanks for an excellent video. Anyone know why the ten hoppers and the extra diesels was hooked up on the rear?

    Glad to see such a heavy UP police presence, everytime you make one of these moves there is always an overzealous idiot that puts his own and everyone elses safety at risk
