Hi! Jane here. I grew up in Omaha, and across the river in Iowa, Council Bluffs was famous for their black squirrels. We were all thrilled when some of them swam the river and started showing up in Omaha. Or however they got there. I think they are beautiful and love to see both kinds. I would love to see some red squirrels swim across the pond from Europe as they are so beautiful. Maybe they could be stowaways on a ship.
I have one living in my backyard here in Cleveland OH. Its a ninja and hilarious to watch. The other squirrels seem to bully it but it gives it right back at them.
It's been said all my life that one of the Kellogg brothers imported the black squirrel from China to Battle Creek Michigan in the early 1900's. I grew up with most of the squirrels in my neighborhood being the black ones.

There have been black squirrels in NJ for decades Nothing new here. First time I noticed them was when I worked at job in Princeton, they were all over the place. That had to be in the mid 80's
I’ve been working for Amazon and I’ve been seeing them in places I wouldn’t have been in my down time….. I’m from Baltimore and I don’t see them in the city
I live in WNY & you see these black squirrels EVERYWHERE just crossing the border into Southern Ontario. But not here. I remember I saw 1 on the American side of Niagara Falls years ago, but never since.

I think we can all agree that the black squirrel "problem" is in all parts of america not just dc. Theres a black squirrel problem in Atlanta as well as in Detroit to an obscene amount. Surprisingly they make up 10 percent of the american squirrel population but consume 90 percent of all american squirrel resources. And they breed much more quickly. The american squirrel birth rates are lower and its caused quite the concern. Something really needs to be done about this because we need our american squirrels back.
The very first time I ever saw a black squirrel was when visiting my 1st husbands family up near Detroit over 20 yrs ago. Black squirrels were everywhere. I was so amazed! 😂 now we have a few living on my street in southern Ohio 🎉

I saw two of them here in Georgia ... in Gwinnett county - just north of Atlanta.
We have 'em in Ohio. I love these little guys. Yes you're supposed to feed them! They'll keep you entertained for hours.
