Can I ask a question about isotope dilution? I am curious why we add a third isotope if we could measure the U-238 and U-235 (and Pb isotopes) directly since we already have two isotopes of the same elements we are examining .. is it because there is not enough of these isotopes in the sample to be measured directly/effectively? Or is it because you need a known quantity to associate with the measured ratio?
