- The Union Pacific "Big Boy" is one of the most iconic steam locomotives in the history of American railroading. A total of 25 of these 4-8-8-4 giants were delivered to the UP in two batches in 1941 and 1944. The Big Boys were originally built to handle the strenuous demands of wartime freight traffic over the Wasatch grade between Ogden, UT and Evanston, WY, but after 1944, their operating territory was extended east to Cheyenne, WY.
After WWII, the Big Boys continued to roll up the revenue service miles hauling endless carloads of peacetime freight on the Overland Route. The 1950s were well known as the time of transition for American railroads, and the Big Boys, despite their power, were still threatened by inevitable dieselization. The Big Boy’s last revenue runs were on July 21, 1959. A total of eight Big Boys made their way into preservation, donated to museums and parks across the country.
For decades, the question was asked, "would a Big Boy ever be seen in operation again." It wasn't until 2013 that all changed, when Union Pacific reacquired Big Boy 4014 for restoration. The locomotive would go from Pomona, CA back to Cheyenne, where Union Pacific steam crews restored it to run on the Union Pacific mainline in May 2019.
You’ll see the Big Boy 4014 in its first year of operation doubleheading with UP 844, as well as running over Cajon Pass, through Arizona, and across Kansas into Missouri. In 2024, the 4014 made a journey to Northern California as part of its Westward Bound Tour. Near complete coverage from 12 different cameras follow the Big Boy into Portola, through the Feather River Canyon, and then east over Donner Pass in a spectacular display of raw power!
The 8mm footage for this program is from the cameras of five different railfans and photographers, and come from the Western Railway Museum, and the collections of Hunter Lohse and Dick Donat.

I’ll be honest, I’m not one to watch hour-long videos of trains. But this video was absolutely amazing! As a model railroader, these up-close shots of the excursion cars show me how I should organize my trains when trying to replicate the prototype. Very helpful, and all-around gorgeous!
Glad you enjoyed
Great captures of the Big Boy! Enjoyed seeing the day and night shots 👍
Glad you enjoyed
A lot of interesting factorial information and history in this presentation.
Glad you enjoyed it dad! ☺️
Excellent video about the history of UP steam locomotives and the Big Boy.
Thanks, Hunter put together a good show
Excellent video Hunter! Enjoyed learning more of the big boys history and about the disposition of the original units. I also really enjoyed the older videos and especially seeing all the fallen flag railroads in the freight consists! Sure did enjoy chasing her over Donner!
Thank you Brian! Really glad you enjoyed it and that you were able to make it to see it for yourself!
That is one big Steam locomotive, the Big Boys are pretty impressive mainly their size.
Aye Bro You and Hunter are Legends for this Video on the Big Boy And Other Union Pacific Steam but I can't say it enough but this is very Awesome I'm going to see 4014 this fall🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃Appreciate you Man🙏🏾✊🏾💯
I was lucky to see 4014 when he was in Boone, Iowa in July 2019 and I actually rode my bike down to Belle Plain, Iowa to see him there on July 30th, 2019 and see him take in more water. No steam locomotive had stopped there since about 1950. I've even heard that 4014's gonna go through there again in the coming days so I'll be going there to do it again. Old Highway 30 parallels the old Chicago & North Western Railroad's mainline from there to Cedar Rapids most of the way there so I may try to chase it there.
They are the biggest locomotives in the world!
Depends who you ask. We just say one of the biggest built, but there is no denying that 4014 is the largest steam engine operating today.
@DynamoProductions-trains, Why do they blow the whistle on Big Boy 4014 during the display in Roseville? I thought when steam locomotives are on display, they're not supposed to be under steam. Are they? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Air compressor
@DynamoProductions-trains Thanks for the info. Do they always blow the whistle on Big Boy 4014 at all the display stops? I'm just asking.
I don’t think you understand. It can be under steam even when it’s not moving. They blow the whistle to entertain the crowd.
@DynamoProductions-trains OK, I understand, I heard that Big Boy is coming to Ft. Worth, TX this October soon, and I'm gonna go see it in person, but I'm sensitive to loud noises, like the whistle on Union Pacific 844 when I went to see it depart from Ft. Worth on an October morning in 2012.
Even though I'm afraid of loud noises, even booming train whistles, that's not gonna stop me from seeing Big Boy 4014 when it comes to Ft. Worth, Because last time we went back in August 2021, There was a rainstorm coming in, and do do all the lightning, the UP crews were forced to close down early, I never even got to explore the Union Pacific museum car which was pretty much a bummer to me.
But the other thing that I can't stop thinking about is that Big Boy 4014 is pulling a freight train insted of the usual passenger train consist, They're doing it again out of Cheyenne on the Heartland of America tour just starting recently, I hope they change freight to passenger consist soon. Because I want to explore the Union Pacific exhibit car when Big Boy comes to Ft. Worth, if they choose not to, then It's another bummer.
Do you have any of the slightest clues on when they're gonna be switching consists?
Also, why does Big Boy always have to pull freight on an excursion or tour? Shouldn't It be pulling.
A fine long passenger train consisting of business cars like Union Pacific 844 and 3985 pull on excursions?
@@danielmckinney5527 Rule of thumb, if you see steam coming out of the engine, even when on display, then its usually under steam 😉
@DynamoProductions-trains did you read my last comment? It says that I heard that Big Boy is coming to Ft.
