Not only doing the work by himself but also doing some nice freight work... and with a caboose! Love it! BIG BOY is making me nostalgic yet again! I understand the purpose for the diesel in prior runs and still love diesels, don't get me wrong! Love all trains.
People are getting the wrong idea about 4014 operating without a diesel. This was to test the PTC so she needed to operate alone. On the coming West Coast trip at least one diesel will still be used to save the extremely expensive braking system on the Big Boy. Parts are no longer available so brake parts need to be custom fabricated which is expensive. The diesel takes the braking strain off the Big Boy
They need to clean 4015 up and some paint, especially if it's going to the west coast. But with PTC on the Big boy they probably can throw any loco at her.
Would be cool if they took the SP heritage unit considering they're going to be in former SP territory for part of the journey. IIRC though UP1996 has some issues and doesn't run very often anymore. I could be wrong though.
An update from the UP page - Ed said a diesel will still ride along most of the time to save on the breaks and fuel, but without the hard wire between the diesel and 4014 it will be easier to stage the Big Boy for showings or for short runs. I think if any runs are done without the diesel they will be short ones near Cheyenne maybe for photo ops.
I was in that blue ford ranger pacing it when it was going up the grade at Speer, I ended up going down the access road a lil bit and ran into a UP officer who actually gave me permission to continue chasing big boy up track 3 on the access roads! Once in a life time thing getting to see that.
i've heard they want to run it next year. But of course just because they want something doesn't mean it will happen.. my understanding is they're bound by what corporate wants them to do, ie what corporate wants them to run, and where, etc.
Positive train control it's a system that required by law to run on the main, previous to this the just used the PTC equipment on the diesel but now big boy has its own so they can occasionally do solo trips, but given the price of the custom brake shoes snd lack of steam infrastructure on the rails most of the time it will still jave a diesel helper to save on wear &Tear and to strech big boys range
4:05 big boy never fails to max out microphones
Awesome! we get to see it with out a helper diesel for once on the main! keep it up!

CPR 2816 is an elegant engine ... but Big Boy 4014 looks badass!!!
Очень круто💪 я его обожаю😊❤
still cant belive we get to see a big boy heading west leaving the yard under the bridge in 2024 ,not 1954!!!

@@BarstowRailfan1996 is in storage at the moment, but I remain hopeful that it will be back soon.

Diesel is also needed for power generation for the modern passenger cars

A force on the rails! Nice video

@@carlenger9707 the depot I work at could charter the 844 for a fan trip, but one problem is that it would cost 250000 dollars

Great video well done!
Magnificent!!!!
Great video. Appreciate no commentary or music.
Nice catches!
Let's take a moment to give props to that first or second hopper with the flat spot getting the chance to do what most of us never will.
I assume the ground was shaking at Speer because Big Boy 4014 thundered on through with his weight? :3
It’s amazing that UP is the only company that has a steam locomotive is operation today. The Big Boy must have a lot of support to keep it running
thats such an american thing to say.
bro cpkc literally running a steam train across the us rn
Awesome! That whistle induces goosebumps! Was that Ed’s dog trackside?
Yes
Anyone else notice the dynamo’s are higher pitched and quieter even though there’s now 3?
More power being generated maybe?
Awesome video, I wonder how the PTC test went?
So what’s an PTC Stands for?
Something old or something new?.

9:28 lol harrison doesn't know what to make of it
What does PCYCY mean?
Passenger: Cheyenne -> Cheyenne
My opinion since it was the 4014 and all it seemed to do was leave Cheyenne and then backed up back to Cheyenne.

What camera do you use to make the videos?
