Transport Hijacker Jailed For NYC Bus Driver Fraud | Off The Rails (2016) | Full Film

  • Darius McCollum has a love of transport that has led to him being jailed 32 times, spending 23 years in prison - despite never harming any person or property. Suffering from Asperger’s syndrome, over 3 decades Darius has commandeered New York buses and subway trains, only to correctly drive their routes and announce the stops. A remarkable story of society’s failure to channel the harmless passions of a mentally challenged man into a productive life.

IN this day and age after all Darrius has been through, and the knowledge h has acquired over all these long years he should be given a job and the NYC transportation museum. He is an obsessed man who has learned a tremendous amount about the NYC subway system. Give him a consulting job with the system and I am 100 percent that he will deliver the goods. While I certainly do thoroughly understand the points of reservation made by the spokesman for the MTA (43:50 - 44:40) about Darius McCollum, the fact is that the MTA, as well as other major transit authorities, actually have legitimately employed "loose cannons" who are far more unpredictable than Darius. To make matters worse, because you never know what might set these people off, they represent a far greater threat to the riding public than Mr. McCollum ever did or ever could. Granted, getting behind the controls of a subway train or the steering wheel of a transit bus without due authorization was definitely wrong. But it cannot be denied that this man, who was a 15-year old kid when he first started this, clearly knew everything you must know to operate these vehicles safely, and he did so flawlessly. He clearly understood the gravity given the fact that he had people's lives in his hands! Yet, according to numerous comments throughout this video, he did the jobs better than some "legitimate" employees who had been with the MTA for years!

Once you come with an element of a degree with a disease or with a mental retardation or mental deflect the US justice system and as well as the psychological services do not want to spend the time or to deal with such problems when it comes to black people. Look up today's reality when it comes to Black Mental health in America it is delayed service it is bad service and it never gets the proper treatment.

It's unfathomable to expect Darrius to make any progress without a solid plan in place. His lawyer was a criminal himself and gave him reckless legal advice. New York Systems painted Darrius as a criminal with a lengthy list of offenses, and his legal representation failed to provide a substantial defense. New York should have offered better support by transferring his parole to North Carolina, where he could have been with his parents, a move that would have made a significant difference.

In a lot of ways I am Darius, as a child people were so cruel to me. I was baptized at 8 years old and just wanted to be respected and not beat up all the time. As I got older I joined on to that same crowd and began to sell drugs on top of being a heavy weed smoker. I was attempting to harden myself and change into something wicked. Thankfully I met a Woman who loved me and was patient for that season and the birth of our Son at the age of 21 began my straightening out period. I was not going to be in jail and miss time with my Son. I wonder if there is a way we can pressure them into giving him a position. Like a petition or something. If there was only a way I could fill their hearts with Love. God Bless Darius!!!

Okay, has he ever applied for any of these transit jobs? Moreover, he did not have to commit another crime because he was afraid of becoming homeless. He had free room and board at his moms home.

MTA should be ASHAMED! MARTA would have hired him soon as he turned 18 and their drivers wouldn't have been fake like they didn't train him. Ridiculous ratty city.

Watching this, hearing his new attorney's position on levels of incarceration. With the professional insights of psychologists, and psychiatrists. One solution is to sign a petition for NYTransit to give him a full, non-biased interview for employment. This is a prime example of an agency embarrassed by its shortcomings and scapegoating the individual. Understandably, operating a commercial bus, or a subway train, there are horrendous liabilities for oversights. Has not, Darrius demonstrated a stellar performance until NYT found itself in an embarrassing situation. Time to get over yourselves, give the man an opportunity to prove his worth. If the agency feels some uncertainty, as a trainee assign Darruis with senior employees on a probationary basis. The situation NYT and the city of NY, have placed Darrius in, is inexcusable. I don't know Darrius personally, few respondents here do. Based on the findings of his new attorney, that of the doctors evaluating him. I for one, would sign a petition on his behalf.

They incarcerated this BLACK MAN for 30yrs instead of found and getting him help. You know how better off he would at 50 years if someone just did the right thing.

😕 Sad story... how everyone failed Mr. Darius McCollum. The worst fears were correct. They put him in a psychiatric hospital instead of helping him. 😢

59:45 uh yeah he does have skills!! He just proved it right after girl said what she did. He should do some kind of touring as a guide
The MTA should hire him to be an MTA Police or security to make sure people DON'T CHEAT THE FARES

I’m on the spectrum as well. Pretty much all of my friends that are also on the spectrum - all of us are obsessed with Busses, Trains and Airplanes. I’m a bus driver myself (don’t worry - I’m legally employed by my company. 😂) I don’t know what it is about public transit that has us obsessed, but it’s really common. Some of these guys though, they have an obsession on another level.
