Germany is not safe? The reality!

  • I am looking forward to share my experience and opinion about is Germany really safe for girls? I know a lot of parents, siblings and other family members have often this concern before sending their loved ones to Germany. I myself have been worried before I came to Germany, but over the past years this worry has not only vanished, but I have developed a sense of understanding about how can one keep herself/himself safe on its own. I hope this video helps you.

I'm German . I can only say here in Germany there are also crimes of course ... of all kinds! but conditions like in the USA do not exist here. there are students from the usa who are dark-skinned, who say that they feel a thousand times safer here and go home alone from the train station at 4 a.m. without having a bad feeling about it. It's already very safe here in Germany, many children aged 6-7 go to school alone in the mornings, even in winter when it's still dark. At lunchtime, children travel alone by bus, tram or train to their grandparents ...
German police, is very well trained and helpful in all situations. we also call our police friends and supporters !!!. Of course, everyone can get themselves into dangerous situations, you should know where in which city, the poorly situated people live, yes we have no go areas ... they should be avoided!
An example, the German police fire 80 bullets per year, 75 of which are warning shots and maybe 2 fatal shots!

I am from NZ, but I live in Poland for work. I am now considering to change jobs and I am in a position of choosing between a few different countries in Europe. I'm fully aware of how the situation has changed in EU in the latest 10 years in regards to the refugee crisis. So, for me when I ask whether a country is safe, it is 90% related to how that crisis has impacted the normal communities within those countries. I did receive a job offer from Sweden, for example, and after looking into the situation there, I decided it would not be a safe place for my myself or my family.

It wouldn't even occur to me, that walking home after sunset would be considered dangerous. Going home at 7pm in the summer is equally safe to going home at 7pm in winter, here in Germany. Less daylight in winter is just normal and does not require a change in habit.

Germany is extremely safe, including for women. It is totally normal for women to be outside alone at night. My wife is also from abroad and she walks home in the dark all the time. Ofc sometimes I pick her up, but not because she feels unsafe.
Obviously you should avoid situations where you feel unsafe (bad guys always look for people who feel unsafe) and you should probably also avoid being drunk and alone at night.

Children and young people are usually taught at an early age to avoid potentially obscure / dangerous situations.
And depending on how well you get home from a restaurant, club, or party by public transport, you are more likely to order a taxi or, if necessary, have your partner or family pick you up. Finally, there are also areas in which the "sidewalks" are "folded up" from 8.30 p.m., especially in the winter months. :)

I'm seriously considering moving to Germany, and this was helpful. I'm a generally cautious person, and bad stuff still happens to me. If Germany is safe as long as you have common sense, then it's given me some hope. I did see another youtuber who said she experienced sexual assault at her university library, but bad stuff happens. Thank you for making this.

German man here. I've never felt unsafe. Went running in rural area at night. But also in cities. I studied in Munich and spent hours walking alone through the night. My daughter has been going home alone since she was 15.
As Nikita said: Normal safety precautions are useful. No gun, no knife, no pepper spray. Just common sense.
    Good video by the way.

I'm from Munich, obvouisly I am a man but have to tell you this: I´ve crossed parks late at night alone multiple times, female friends of mine usually always went home alone after partying, I knew parents they sent their toddlers alone to the kindergarden etc. etc. I know some weird stories though, nevertheless situations almost never end up really bad. Southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria are heavens in terms of safety.

I get your point about "Vorsicht ist besser als Nachsicht" - or in your words 'precaution is better than cure'. But I try / tried never to get into this mindset of What if... and let fear rule me! I walked alone, I rode public transport alone etc no matter when - but yes without being stupid, e.g. go through a dark park at night. All in all I think that people feel your energy. Are you afraid or sure of yourself?

  • @wesprog9809
    @wesprog9809 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Only because it gets dark earlier does not mean it's unsafe. I don't get why people think they will get jumped on the street just because it's dark outside. Most crimes are done by people you know or at least know you and not by random people who wait on the street for a stranger to come by...

I believe your daughter should be the one to proceed further with the process and take things in her hands, with you always being her support but in the back. 🙂
She should start looking for AI in different public universities and then see which course fits her. She should then check the requisites and see if an application can be sent for this course.

That was by far the most extensive list of precautions I ever heard being taken for getting home in the dark in Germany. And I mean that in the sense of: I watch a lot of expat-videos and this list beats the whole sum of them.
It really sounds like a combination of indian socialization and your personal safety level. And while I admire your level of caution, I hope you learn to get more comfortable with those kind of situations 😀

People generally feel safer in groups; and I know plenty who avoid walking around alone as well, of course also specifically in darker areas and so on (there's some recognition of this issue, so for example these days bus stops more often come with lights, parking garages have better lighting, and that sort of thing).
Unfortunately, while this might be a subjectively good thing to do, objectively it's effectively precisely the wrong thing. You are infinitely more likely to be attacked by someone you know then by someone random on the streets. It'd statistically be better to turn down a friend offering to walk you home than to just walk home alone.
But, I mean, who does that?

The little bird has left the inner circle of the family nest. For the parent birds in the nest, every place outside the nest appears like the courtyard to hell. The parent birds like to escalate into surreal fears. After all, we know that swarms of dark dragons circling over Germany that love to eat small birds.
