  • You can describe me by telling someone that I am brown or I have a dark skin tone. I find it ok, but what is not ok is treating or believing yourself superior over me. Here's my story and my encounter with racism in my past years in Germany.

I come from a city called Jaipur, where the streets (old city) are full of tourists, irrespective of which weather it is. And I can so well remember that each time I saw some tourist, I used to look at them, what they wore, how they bargained with the drivers and how they handled scorching heat in summers. *This of course, was not a racist look, but just a curious one to have seen people even white skin and blue/green eyes!*

As a German I can assure you the staring and checking out is normal here. People would look at you for no reason. It can get quite awkward when you catch them staring. They mostly check your clothes, style and/or looks. It's not always staring in a bad way. Sometimes it can be admiring your style. I always feel like I have something on my face. I hate it. But unfortunately I am quite a starer myself🙈 I just can't change it.

i once encountered an Indian guy phoning someone and switching between Hindi und German all the time. I was so happy that I actually knew it was Hindi (because when I was 16 years old I was obsessed with all things bollywood) and stared at this man for mere minutes. it was so amazing hearing someone speak Hindi so fluently and mixing it with (really well spoken) German. I didn't want to be rude by staring, but this was a once in a lifetime experience and I couldn't for the life of me look away. staring is not always a bad thing, because maybe people are just fascinated by you. ;)

There is a German saying... "How you call it into the forest, it comes back!" This applies to many situations. And many people perceive the "directness" of us Germans as "impolite", but this is often not the case.
I have had many contacts in my life with people from other countries and with different "skin colour", both at work and in my private life, but I have never had any major problems with it. And certainly not because of their skin color.

      funny that you think that
direktness for us german is actually showing respect
what i mean with that is
for us beeting around the busch or lie to someone only because we dont want to hurt them is disrespectfull
most of us belive that when you dont say what you think in the first place it will get much worse
      for example
istad of telling my mother "hay can we talk later?"
i say direkt" mom stop you are talking to loud even our neightbors can hear what you say please lower your voice"
I do that because i care about her when i dont tell her that shes talking to loud and she do that at the supermarket or somewhere else..the cinema for example then that would be an uncomfortable situation for all people there
      other example's
"outch that tone was screwed up"
" you grammar .....not on point"
it may be sounds rude and unfriendly but it isnt
wit basicly means work at that
it means we care about you
and no gift above 50€ this critmast mean no gift above 50€ this critmast
we say this color dosent suit's you instad of "try a other t shirt" because we dont want our beloved people to buy something that wont suite them when we are not around

    • @inder19852000
      @inder19852000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You can talk directly to you mom or call her name instead of Mom/Mummy. That is your issue. At work place or University, to say things in a polite way is a sign of well-cultured people. If you want to see it just go to France/Britain or Switzerland. Swiss people say Germans are too direct. If you go to a German bakery and ask do you have this bread? Standard answer would, ´No, we dont have it´. You can put the same thing in a different way, ´I am sorry, we dont have it´. German directness may be polite in Germany, but not in 99% of other countries in the world! Customer service in Germany is very bad. If you go to a supermarket and ask something they will always answer you back in an unfriendly manner with an emotionless serious face!

Having this "racism" label in your head all the time can be very dangerous. When you expect racism you will probably experience "racism". I have met immigrants who, whenever they were rejected or not treated well always blamed it on racism. The real reason was probably completely different.

Whole heartedly agree. The West or the Left leaning Academia which is operated by the LEFT thrive on division, they adore placing RACISM in the heads of young minds. Those who constantly think about racism or any other thought; will fulfill that prophecy. Example: If you always talk about how bad tail gators are in your city and that you always experience this when driving, you're creating your own reality and thus it seems everyone is tailgating out and about. Its as though you're looking for what you are thinking about.

In some cultures it is considered rude if you don't have a 30 minute chat with whoever you are talking to, before you actually state your problem.
I've noticed this with Americans in particular.
They probably perceived the caretaker as rude because he didn't go "How are you? How was your day? Blah blah blah" but jumped right at the problem... which is rather typical German behaviour.
I've noticed that a lot of German culture is actually based on not wasting other people's time. It explains so many things: The directness, the lack of empty small talk, the super-speed cashiers, etc.

    • @faultier1158
      @faultier1158 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah, that's true! Idk about the other students' individual experiences, so I'm not going to judge them. But yeah, the politeness standard is very different: I am actually actively annoyed by people who do smalltalk before they tell me what they actually want, so I try to don't waste other people's time either!
But there ofc is actual racism here, too. There are, for example, statistics that show that people with arabic/muslim names have a lower chance at being invited to job interviews or finding a flat. A lot of that is subconscious bias and no active hatret, but it is still real and has a noticable effect on people's lifes.

    • @Ari33sa
      @Ari33sa 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it might also be a 'class' think on top of that. Not just that the caretaker might have actual reason to be in a bad mood if he's doing all the work their and nobody values it and then is called 'rude', 'cold' or even 'racist' ... But I also think that those characteristics you named that are true for most germans really are mostly so for working class people. that might be a complete stereotype but I grew up as the daughter of academics and I get the feeling that working class people are a special kind of people: even more honest and direct. Maybe ... 'less posh' you could say. I don't mean that in a negative way or anything but that's my experiance. Also my experiance with most caretakers I've met so far. They are local people who speak the local dialect, alltogether nice people, I get along with most of them ... but whatever 'stereotype' you might have that applies to people from a certain region does even more so for them :D And if you're not used to not only the 'german culture' but more so the 'local culture' that might come as a bit of a shock... even more so when most of your newly learned german flies out of the window, because they talk in heavy dialect.

If this comforts you: Rude housekeepers are an experience EVERYONE makes from time to time, no matter which nationality or race. Many are frustrated because they do not feel their work is valued. They just cleaned the floor and someone throws paper on it. He has just repaired something, and someone has broken it again. In the company I work (German, 55 years old) people joke that you have work on your relationship with the boss - and with the caretaker.
Smile at him, tell him he did a great job, and you will have a friend for life.
So, I believe it is also about "class", not only race. I often see that people with higher education behave arrogant towards those who have a less well paid job. I am not talking about you, but you may see the result from many bad experiences he made.
Nice video that makes me wonder if I treat those guys always the way they deserve.

wait until you start applying for jobs. I have PhD from a german Uni, coming from Asia as well, got 2 scholarships (for my bachelor & master), got rejected mostly during document screening. It's sad, i got my bachelor from the best uni in my country, master from top 10 uni in another country, and a phd from a german uni with magna cum laude. I have a job now, but compared to my german husband (not even bachelor degree, took him 2 applications and thats it), it took me a LOT of applications to land a job. Well that's my experience dealing with implicit racism (which is the worst kind of racism - in my opinion). You might be able to avoid this if your doing your PhD in computer science / engineering though, or if you stay in academics. And i have C1. After seeing how easy it was for my husband to get a decent job, I am sure that these rejections are mainly because my last name doesnt sound german.

Arabs are literally so full of themselves that they consider other nationalities being inferior to their own. I wouldn't say there are no good traits in Arabs; in fact sometimes I am amazed by their generosity and kindness. It feel like they juggle two personalities, one being of kindness whereas other of sheer superiority over all other nations. I would go as far to say that most, if not all, problems in these countries are because of the nation actually looking down on not only non-muslims, but Muslims from other countries as well. Whether it is because of their affluence or because of them being the direct descendants of the "most superior" religion Islam, is debatable.

@Nikita: Everybody has a different experience and you are among the lucky ones!
It is true everywhere that there is an existence of mixture of people or rather mixture of personalities! Racism is not about only skin colour! Racism has different ways to come out!
Some 'German' behaviour from my experience.
    1) Germans think they are the superior most race even among the Europeans. My colleague was Italian. Brightest and excellent in the group.
All the time I have the feeling the other two German colleagues were talking about him and there was a considerable amount of effort to represent his negative sides to the Boss. I have especially heard talking negatively about 'Italy and the Italian people' during coffee time. Germans can't take that any other country people coming to Germany and picking all the fruits!
    2) Germans find fault among others and define it as 'Criticism'. If any other other country people or other race do that, Germans would define it as 'Gossip'.
    3) Germans can't think about there are the existence of other developed countries and/or races as well other than European countries.
I told my Colleague that I went to Japan and the trains do not even run 10 sec late. My colleague replied that those were very expensive and also started commenting on population dynamics and non-expressive nature of Japanese people. Well, being/for an Indian, Deutsch Bahn is not cheap either!!!
    4) Now, I come to student house experience. We had a common and shared Fridge. Once I was on a trip and when I came back from my trip, I saw my name stating ' Sarika, please clean the Fridge'. I asked him why he has written my name over the Fridge when I was not even at the student house for the last 10 days. He replied 'It is not your dirty India that you keep your water in the fridge. You can take the cold water from the tap directly!' I was surprised by his way of words toward me just because I kept one bottle of water in the Fridge. He did not need to use the word 'dirty' in the entire sentence. After two months, two other students came, one from USA and one from Spain. I was glad that these two people always supported me and protected me from the German Racism. I also understand that my Spanish and the American friends were educated and hold a different view. So I forgive that German chap who has never been out of his country.
    5) Contrary to my 4th statement, education doesn't define mentality. I have worked with educated Germans. It was a mix of people but I was surprised when the Chief says that 'Dresden is the Indian province in Germany with a bundle of cheap people!'. Then looked at me saying 'Please do not take it as despicable'. I really do not know what he meant by that. I left that group within few months.
I am sorry to write all these but I am glad that you had a very good experience in Germany.

The previous comment was an appreciation rather than a criticism towards one's country.
First of all, India should feel proud for people like you, who have started finding such basic answers, which pushes them to find the ground reality. And finally such people can do, can achieve something on global front for what India can take proud in true sense.
Our glorious culture, the message of truth and non-violence, multi-religious people makes me proud to be an Indian. If you travel through the country you will find different people of different religions, but every heart gives the same hospitality. India is a country of love, care and affection. In today’s world of selfishness, we in India still respect our elders, care for our mates and traditional culture. The pledge “ All Indians are Brothers and Sisters” is believed and followed by all of us. Thus, I feel very proud to be an Indian and lucky too.
Here are some reasons that will surely make people aware about what our country is all about :
      1. ENVIRONMENT RICH WITH DIFFERENT FLAVORS:
India’s environment is rich with many different flavours. Beautiful Mountains, Graceful Rivers, Aggressive Desert and Dangerous Wildlife to name a few. The world praises its natural beauty and that’s the reason tourism in India is the largest service industry with the contributions of 8.78% of the total employment in the country.
      2. LAND WITH EMOTIONS:
Being an Indian the emotional bonding are much more. India is rich with emotion filled moments; rather a speech by a politician, a scold by a teacher or care by a mother. A feeling at home on Sunday or daily workload at office, No water supply one day or unclean roads, List is endless. We Indians are no doubt rich with variety of emotions. “Tabhi toh Sochte hai ‘Dil Se’ karte hai “Dil se’.”
      3. YOUR LIFESTYLE, YOUR CHOICE:
India have a flavour of the amazing diversified culture from all over the world. The Indian culture has been rigid and that’s why it’s surviving with pride in Modern era. An Indian Family is rich with every kind of people, A Grandfather with Dhoti-Kurta, a father with formal and a grandson following latest trends.
      4. BEST TELECOM MARKET:
India is the fastest Growing telecom market in the world and has the lowest call rates on earth. So here the connectivity is better than many other developed countries of the world. Indian Telecom analysis (2008-2012) says that Indian telecom industry has undergone a tremendous change during the past few years.
      5. MEDIA, THE FOURTH PILLAR:
India has the largest number of news channel in the world and largest newspaper market in the world. Our Free Media is a largely asset and the greatest achievement for our country. Media serves as the fourth pillar or like a family member to us. From the local issue like a chain snatching to the national issue like Lokpal bill or international updates of Olympics, our media is always with us.
      6. THE AMAZING BOLLYWOOD:
Bollywood normally termed as Hindi Cinema with about 400 films every year is the largest centre of film production in the world. We Indians are like in Love with Movies. Fourteen Million Indians go for a movie almost daily. Although, movies made in America have edged into India and American and British theatres showing Bollywood Movies on a more and more frequent basis. Indian Movies are day by day becoming more and more famous around the world.
      7. NATIONAL RURAL EMPLOYMENT GUARANTEE ACT OR NREGA:
The Indian Job Guarantee Scheme came into existence on August 25, 2005 is the largest ever-public employment scheme visualized till date.
      8. SECULARISM:
India has been declared a secular state by its own constitution. Here we can see different religions and castes like no other place in the world. Together locating the temples and mosques. A friends group is rich with different castes and religions, which proves us how the cultures and castes of India diversify.
      9. MOUTH-WATERING CUISINE:
Indian cuisine is rich with wide variety of regional natives to India. This cuisine varies because of soil types, climates, occupations and influenced by cultural values and religion. Our Spices, vegetables and fruits are rich with mouth-watering tastes and it’s also the fragrance which creates magic. The variety is immense, colourful, aromatic and inexpensive even at top rated hotels. No wonder, it’s the third most popular cuisine in the world and nor it will be surprising when it becomes the first.
      10. INDIAN WEDDING:
In India, there is no greater event in a family than a wedding. Wedding in India are beautifully celebrated like nowhere in the world. We dance; we sing and celebrate it like a national festival. It symbolizes our tradition, our culture and heritage. They extend to a week celebration and filled with emotions, glamour and glazes. Various events bring Chuckle and laughter while some other makes we cry. They vary from region to region because of our diversified traditions. Now this has set a trend in foreign countries too to marry in royal way like Indians do.

Let's not fight guys.... Let's not argue on this topic. Everyone has his/her opinion! It's absolutely fine. It's good to understand and getting aware about various things rather than criticising each other's country. Every place has good players as well as bad. It's not just in India, infact every place on this earth has positives and negatives. But that doesn't make the whole country to be blamed for. It's just a few stupid people who promote such things like non violence, dowry etc. True! I agree to this. But that doesn't make you forget the achievements and the great contribution of one's own country.... It's the way how you perceive things..... For me I see more great contributions rather than the negatives. And I am sure that you people now agree to this.
Thank you so much people for taking interest in this discussion. And let's be the one from the crowd and not the part of the crowd and stop arguing!

You mentioned towards the beginning a story of an Indian student claiming to be rejected for an internship for "racist reasons". I can easily see a factual basis for that: a particular practice Indian students are reknowned for (more than other nationalities) is to apply for internships in a scattergun approach - apply everywhere, and hope that one of the many will succeed. From the POV of the people the students apply to this is bordering on spam, and they treat these applications accordingly. Thing is: if you are from India your application may automatically be seen as "one of those", simply because noone wants to spend a lot of time separating the genuine from the spammy.

The teachers, professors and bosses aren't racism either. Of course they like students, who make their work direct more than students who are lazy, and there the 'racism' begins. German people are taught to be diligent at every time. Most foreigners aren't so diligent, and thats something germans don't like. The 'lazy people' from another country then think that we are racism, but we aren't.

Hi Nikita, thank you for sharing your experiences which I find encouraging. I'm a biological german myself and I believe that your experiences shall and will be the normal case. But we cannot ignore the other side. There actually is racism and intolerance existing in Germany, especially against muslim people, but more in a general, diffuse way. That means, that large groups of people would say they don't want to have muslim people in the country, they should go away, but they would exclude their muslim neighbors or acquaintances because they know they're fine people. This makes racism more abstract but nonetheless it exists and there are many occurrences of verbal and physical violence against different looking people. But I will hope that the majority will behave like the guys you met in germany. Good luck to you.

    1. tbh you dont look "brown" in the sense of "must be foreign" you get away as european. i dontthink there is much racism from one european country towards another. negative stereotypes, yes, but racism? i dont think so. the type of racism that happens in europe is usually directed at non europeans. mostly against people from north africa, middle east and africa in general. i think its mostly a mix of fear and cultural differences. i think india is on that list too because of incompatible cultur (aggressive behavior) and fear. an example that "proves" that is for example chinese people. no one fears or hates chinese, they have a reputation of being polite and peacefull.
2.universitys and young educated people in gerneral are very open and i believe that is true everywhere in the world.
    3. you are a pretty woman that may influence on how young male react towards you. iam pretty sure i would have done the same as the guy in your train story, but iam also 100% sure that there is no possible way that i would have bothered to even consider such an action for a guy.

necrionos how is India on the list for aggressive behaviour????? china is the one trying to take over Asian countries. we are peaceful people.

    • @necrionos
      @necrionos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

china is aggressive as a country, against other countrys. basically like russia ( and the usa) but more local. and china is aggressive in a sense of its government against its own population when it comes to individualism or minoritys. so its government is very aggressive, the country as entity is aggressive.
but if i walk on the street and a group of chinese people crosses my path i consider that situation even less dangerous than a random group of people from my own city. i never heard anything about chinese people being violent
if i walk on the street and i see a group of (male) indians the first thing that comes in my mind are those frequent rape news. the second thing that comes to my mind are probably stereotypes like a general different view on the role of woman and men , religious issues a more physical and loud way to solve issues and such stuff.
personally i consider a male indian person as a possible threat. not as much as a north african or arabian looking guy but way above "normal".
it may be just feelings or incomplete / onesided informations but that is the way it is.
and a chinese, kroean, japanese person does not trigger such thoughts ( to be honest iam not sure if i would be able to distinguish just from a quick look so iam throwing them together ). i dont see a single chinese or a group of them as a possible threat. in every day situations they behave generally even more civilized than european people.
as i said that may come from missinformation or onesided news reports. and i wouldnt even travel to china because i consider the country itself as dangerous. but i wouldnt travel to india too because i consider the people dangerous or incompatible with how i used to live.

if i spend the whole summer in the sun, my skin colour becomes pretty brown, but if i would go to india or an arabic country you couldstill point at me and say "thats a north european guy" even if we had almost the same skin colour. the same goes for southern european people, they usually have a pretty healthy skin colour, but no one would refer to them as "brown".
i couldnt even give you a list of things that make you "brown" as in "clearly not european". her general apearance does not look foreign to me. i also watch the videos from this "Bharat in Germany" guy (which are pretty good too). he has the same skin colour but he apearance says clearly "brown".
i would go so far and say "brown" has not much to do with skin colour and is more a word for "foreign", "apearently not one of us"

    • @necrionos
      @necrionos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

maybe i am not very differing or not looking at details or not knowing enough details. i look at someone and either he/she "feels" foreign/different or not, feels like either a threat or not and either that person has something i am interested in or not. i am not interested in people with 3 "not".
also there are turks (or more likely kurds in my city) who look foreign and others i couldnt identify as turks if they had a name that i could pronounce.

It is more the way you behave and/or "blend in" / approach people than you are black, brown, asian or whatever. It also depends on how you define "racist" or "nazi". There is a big cultural and/or (maybe better) ideological war going on in western society but especially in germany and the power of "wording" is used by the left against others. Everyone who has open eyes and walks through bigger/university cities can see it in the streets and in the toilets. Also the migration crisis has its part in it.
I don`t know that much about india but as far as i was told it is a multicultural society. I don`t know how exactly it is organised but i think there are still borders (and if only in their heads) and conflicts. Maybe you can explain some things about this.

More often than not a lot of people from India accuse people of being 'racist' when these guys are just not qualified or are suitable to the given position. I'm from Bangalore but doing my bachelor's in TUM and never have I ever faced any racial DISCRIMINATION in any academic or professional situation. One of my cousin studying in the US east coast and now living in Paris, even he says he never felt alienated or discriminated against. There might be discrimination somewhere sometime but definitely not the most prevalent behaviour.

I lived about two years as a white person in Ruanda. And my experience is racism is a human problem not a white problem. People of color has the same racist mindsetting if they are the majority.
Tribalism is also a sort of racism.
Everyone can be victim of racism. Not only people of colour. It's a minority problem. And people of colour are a minority here. So they often are victims of sterotypes.
I have some friends in Germany which are from asia or africa and more than a half of them reported racist experiences. Sometimes experiences in a subtle way.

As far as I'm concerned, germans are "known" for their staring. I myself do it probably too without realizing it. But it's more the fascination than a "bad" staring. And very often it has nothing to do with the color of your skin. However many of us white people find the darker skins very attractive. And old guys like me still like to look at beautiful young women like you. We just don't remember why. =;-)

Hum, I can't say for sure about Germany, but here in Norway (a culture that's very similar in a lot of ways) racism differs quite a lot from racism in many other countries in the way that you get little of things like race motivated violence or other forms of overt racism.
Instead what tends to happen is more low key racism.
People having a higher threshold to hire people with a non-norwegian sounding name for instance.

If you go with open eyes through your city, then you will see all sort of racism. So, I feel actually more comfortable, that Nikita did not made these bad experiences so far.
