A Day in NDG (Notre-Dame-de-Grâce), without a doubt one of Montreal's most underrated neighbourhoods. I explore NDG with Leigh, a local to NDG who moved to Montreal from the US when she was younger. NDG is a residential area of Montreal, that looks great to live or visit.

NDG is in my opinion the hidden gem of mtl. I moved here in 2017 after a lonely first year in the city and immediately felt so accepted and enveloped by the community. Getting a job in this neighbourhood and being introduced to the local crowd changed my life, for many years I actually watered one of my regular's plants while she went away in the winter! Best food, best people, diverse and loving community. I seriously can't say enough about NDG.

My parents moved from Massachusetts to Montreal when I was two, in the late 70s, and settled in NDG. Ive lived in this neighborhood all my life and for as long as I live in Montreal, will never leave. Protect this neighborhood and keep it from becoming a gentrified hellhole, its a gem.

I LOVE NDG! Moved here back in 2014 from Ville St Laurent, it's my home now. ^_^
Lived in Cote Des Neiges, TMR, VSL, can't see myself living anywhere else but NDG now. ^_^

I stumbled upon your channel by accident, but I enjoyed seeing how someone new to the city sees it with fresh eyes. I was born outside of Montreal, moved to the South Shore with my family and as soon as I could moved into the city in the early 1980s. I worked, studied and partied all throughout the city until opportunities brought me to Ottawa, Whistler and Kingston. Through it all I would come back to see family and friends and feel the vibe again. It's always in motion, hot spots come and go, trends change, neighborhoods evolve and that all adds to the mix. I came back again in the winter of 2019 only to find my old hood of NDG still standing, but much ... much more expensive than my old student days. Still, with a bit of searching, I found something that people in Toronto, or Vancouver would die for. "The Deege" is still in my opinion one of the best neighborhoods in MTL.

Very solid video. I’m a native anglophone Montrealer and I will say that the anglophone community spends a lot of time in NDG, especially in the Monkland Village and Sherbrooke areas. Others do too but definitely one of the more anglophone and multicultural neighbourhoods. Tons of pubs, restaurants, cafés, chill atmosphere. You explored a good chunk of it!

Also FYI the modern building at the start of the video next to Vendome station is the new McGill University Health Centre! Finished 5 years ago. One of the biggest hospitals in the country.

DUDE! YOU MISSED CHELET BAR-B-Q!!! How does one walk so close to Chalet Bar-B-Q and not get drawn in by the smell? It's like walking down Atwater and not noticing the Forum!
Ah NDG (aka No Damn Good)! The neighbourhood that William Shatner, Jay Baruschel and I all call home!
That mural next to the Provi-Soir (or as it is now known, Couche-Tard) on Sherbrooke at Madison is very well-known. Our Lady of Grace! The mural with the child and the Rubik's Cube is my favourite and I didn't know what it was called until now. I think that it's on the northeast corner of Sherbrooke and Decarie Boulevard facing west not too far from the border with Westmount. You can see it from the legendary Chalet Bar-B-Q at the corner of Sherbrooke and Addington on the west side of the Decarie Expressway.
Hahaha, Vendome Station. It looks like a moon base. It's pronounced "Von-Dome" and it's one of two stations in NDG. The massive modern-looking multicoloured building is the Montreal SuperHospital. The other Metro Station is Villa-Maria which is on the east side of the Decarie at Monkland. It has a red/orange/yellow colour theme with some circles of those colours (and for some reason, also purple). Vendome is a short walk down a few steps and is right under the street but Villa-Maria is DEEP because the gradient of the land rises considerably as you go north. This is especially noticeable on Girouard between Sherbrooke and Terrebonne.
NDG is incredibly beautiful with its huge old Sugar Maples providing somewhat of a shady canopy over the streets and avenues. They give NDG its tranquil atmosphere. The Monkland village has some great restaurants and boutiques.
NDG is one of the last bastions of Anglophone Montrealers, a stronghold that has endured despite not being on the West Island.

0:51 that'd be the GLEN hospital :). It's cool to see my old stomping ground (from 1991 to 2010) I lived on Benny, Grand, Decarie and NorthCliffe which was just a street over from Vendome. Spent my youth there attending higshool/cegep and university. While quite a few things have changed some stayed the same. So many good memories.

Glad you found the neighborhood. It's great in it's walkability and full of small shops and restaurants. You missed chalet BBQ though which is legendary in the area. I'm happy la louisiane is still there after 20+ yrs. Had a good birthday dinner there once. The Empress used to be cinema 5, a repertory theatre and I saw lots of films there like The Terminator. It had a great interior and if you sat in the front row you could put your feet up on the stage and dump your coats and bags there in the winter. Too bad it's been left to fall apart like that. The neighbourhood has always been great, but recently rents have been going up and people are being priced out like one guy in the news who has to move to Brossard.
You should check out Cote de neiges next!

Just stumbled upon your channel and seriously, you've got some great content on here. I especially like that you're showcasing parts of Montréal that just don't get the love they deserve. I really hope that in the next few years, more tourists will dare venture off the beaten path of Downtown/Old Montreal/Plateau and get to truly experience our beautiful city.
You should totally do Ahuntsic next, which is another of Montréal's hidden gems in my opinion. Gouin boulevard, Île-de-la-Visitation nature park and Fleury street are some of my favourite spots in the entire city.

After some reflection, I realize that a major reason I've enjoyed this lovely video so much is that it doesn’t report on a tragedy or violent crime. I hadn’t realized how over-saturated I’ve been with video footage of our beloved neighbourhoods showcasing only tragic news events or wild weather (such as the tornado-like storm that hit NDG Park in 2017, which, btw, was the last thing I remember watching about NDG until I came upon your vid). Thanks!

Huge thumbs up to you The New Travel for taking the time to show off NDG. I'm a local guy who spent about two years in NDG living in a 3 1/2 on Madison avenue. NDG has some nice restaurants, parks and relatively cheap housing ( I think, anyway, as it's been over ten years since I lived there). Because of all that, It's a good place for uni students to live since it's also only about 20-30 minutes away - by bus and/or metro, to reach any of the campuses on the island.

Hi Dan, I really enjoy your videos and I appreciate them. I'm also from Winnipeg, and I moved to NDG over a year ago, and your videos really helped me make my decision on where to go. As an Anglophone, NDG seemed like the best place for me to land in. I'm glad you enjoyed the area and that it treated you well, not to say that I've had a different or worse experience.
All in all, NDG is a beautiful borough and Montreal is a beautiful city with so much history and culture. I've lived here, in Hochelaga, and on the Plateau, and I've worked in Dorval, Mount Royal, and in Saint Laurent, and so far I like it here the best.

Thanks for filming my childhood neighborhood, aka the neighborhood nobody goes to except people who live there haha. The big modern looking building is the new super hospital. Sherbrooke street is the hipper younger area, the monkland village is the most gentrified posh area, and deeper in ndg near fielding and walkley is the "ghetto" or so people used to call it. Other great restaurants are the persian cafe toranj, they serve their food on golden platters, bangkok express and tacos tijuana. Cosmos is also an establishment, but more greasy spoon style. It also has akhavan market, which I miss terribly with bulk nuts and olives, and a few korean markets. Ijust needed to dump this information here.

Cool! You should have walked residential streets too, some streets have really awesome brick houses, if you're into architecture... cheers

Looks like NDG is a great neighborhood - very diverse architecturally and ethnically, and the kind of place to easily call home. That pulled pork sandwich looked wonderful! Too bad that great Empress Theatre has to be taken down - hope they can retain some of the facade, as they do not do this architectural detail anymore.🐢

If you want to easily remember the paths of your visites, you should use a running/biking app that records your route.

If I'm not mistaken, the Empress theatre will be demolished but the facades will be kept which is half the good news.
