One of my Facebook friends has a video of 8099 on her wheels and moving under her own power. The side that she was laying on shows damage to the handrails and other various damage.
@@needles_sub3307 ok. In the video I saw from Pitcairn, pa. I did not see a second engine pulling her. I just assumed she was moving under her own power.
The main thing is that the crew is okay. A loco can be replaced, human lives can't, so praise God they made it out alright. As for 8099, I'm sure she'll be back on the road eventually. As long as the frame isn't bent, they'll get her back up and running, even though it will take a while.
The first thing I look for is that the crew is fine, the crew is more important than a locomotive but it sucks 8099 derailed, I'm just glad the crew is fine
We missed seeing this by a few minutes on 12/11/21 between Chicago and Elkhart. So disappointing. We really really hope it can be restored and back in action!!! The struggle is real to see a beautiful heritage unit in this state. Thankful the crew is safe though!! Wow!!
For anyone who doesn’t know by now, 8099’s pretty much fully repaired now. Pictures were leaked this week of 8099 with a brand new coat of Southern Railway paint. She’ll most likely be back before the end of the month.
I have some good news you all railfans 8099 is being rebuild in the altoona shops right now TH-cam also shows it being towed to altoona and on the heritageunits page there are pictures of it sitting in juanita !
They rerailed the 8099 yesterday afternoon. I saw a picture of it afterwards and the worst damage it has is the front part (from hitting the rocks probably), the conductor side handrails are bent in, and the conductor side has some bad scratches. It’ll be back on the rails at some point, the big question is how long will it sit in Altoona waiting to repairs. The most important part is that there were no injuries.
First of all I’m glad everyone got out okay that’s the main thing , second this hurts my heart seeing this happen to a heritage unit on any railroad they are like celebrities of a non forgotten past 🙏 it gets repaired and back to work soon
8099 was seen on VRF Elkhart at 5pm Saturday headed east out of the yard. The sky was brilliant evening sunshine against some amazing clouds. Sad it turned up wrecked that same night at Beck's Run Pittsburgh.
That's the heritage unit my family and I saw at the Horseshoe Curve a few years ago. I'm glad the crew was alright, but I sincerely hope the #8099 will be repaired and back in service.
Hope 8099 will be restored to its pre-accident splendor. May the new head at NS smile kindly on plans for restoration. It has looked a little shop worn lately, as any good unit functioning in mainline service since its Spencer Shops debut with its 19 siblings.. Glad crew is recovering well. Thank you for this posting.
Good point Jack, I forgot about that... Wick Moorman was behind the Heritage program at NS back then. Now that he's gone, it's anybody's guess what they'll do.
The heritage program stood out mighty tall amongst the other class 1’s and with the engine being fairly young thats one of their babies she’ll be back in service before too long, if Stanley Crane was still living he would have seen to it……ms~~~
8099 is back on her wheel and moving under her own power. Last I heard was that she was in a Siding at the Pitcairn intermodal center. No clue where she is now since I had to work in another part of the state.
Thank God there were no fatalities. Two GP-7s from the Central Railroad of New Jersey went off an open drawbridge into the Newark Bay in 1958 looking a lot worse. Both were rebuilt and served for many years afterward.
To think if 8099 would have been trailing, she would have been as good as scrap. The damage on that second locomotive looks beyond repair. Painful to look at.
Important locomotive but say it be clear . Human lives more important any day all day . Prayers for crews . This could been much worse happy to hear no major injuries .
There are around 20 cars still waiting to be scrapped including NS 8175 with heavy rear damage and another loco that is a pile of junk.No sign of the heritage unit I assume it was sent off for repairs. Almost 3 months and still not cleaned up.

Bummer. Thank goodness the crew's alright. Well for 8099, its off to the nearest NS repair facility, in this case, Juniata Shops. With 8099 sidelined, will it mean that the Conrail heritage unit will be pulled out of storage?
That's enough to break your heart! I remember when the Southern Crescent derailed, in Virginia. I believe, if I remember correctly, the E-8s were totaled. Thank GOD no one was killed!
Thanks for the update. I hope that that skilled people at the Juniata shops can get her going again. Most importantly is that there were no serious injuries. Maybe in the future, NS would consider some type of barrier that would trip an alarm, as this area is prone to slides.
I live near Pittsburgh...I had no idea this happened. NS has had more than a few derailments in the area in the past few years. Altoona is not that far away. Including Altoona, that is about five derailments in the past two and a half years. Too many!
I was pretty torn up about the southern heritage unit being derailed. (it's really the only one of the ns heritage units I've seen). but with what happened towards the end of 2021 I think the tornadoes in Kentucky was much worse than this. (it was almost Christmas and I feel like the folks out there didn't get to have much of a Christmas). now I still really like the ns heritage units a lot (though I really wish they would give them all a new paint job cause they're not the same as they were 10 years ago). even I found out the cn grand trunk heritage unit was involved in a sideswipe accident with a boxcar in green bay wisconsin at the end of April. (though the damage on the gt heritage unit isn't as bad as the southern heritage unit as it just needs the handrails fixed and a few touch ups here and there). so I hope the grand trunk heritage unit will return soon as I really like the cn heritage units. just need to wait for that soon.

Glad the crew made it out alright. I have caught this unit a few times and pretty confident it'll be repaired in the next few months like what happened with NS 4001.
I used to work for the railroad and I sure hate to see any Locomotive get torn up! Especially these beauties here! That GE ES44AC NS # 8099 Southern Railway Heritage Engine of Norfolk Southern is one of my favorites. This is a shame! I'm sure they will take it to the Juniata Locomotive Works in Altoona, Pennsylvania to rebuild this one like the GE AC44C6M NS # 4001 that got wrecked.
Why does this remind me so much of the Hiram Derailment (at how NS 8099's position being similar to that of NS 8133)? Of course, circumstances are different as well as the power and one of the units being scrapped. Still reminds me of it.

As of today, there is still equipment up there from the cleanup, but rail traffic is moving through
Why did Norfolk Southern ES44AC # 8099 The Southern Heritage Unit land or flip on its side and ES44AC # 8175 flip or land and get damaged by the rock? Also I am interested for the 1 crew engineer get out.
I can't imagine Not getting hurt rolling a train. There's nothing soft and cushy in that cab sept the seat cushion. An interview with an crew who's been in a roll would be interesting.
Okay, let's get this prioritized. Human lives were spared and the environment was spared. This is a Diesel locomotive, mass produced but specially painted to the delight of railfans and railroaders system wide. It can be rebuilt, repainted, and most importantly, replaced. Let's not go into mourning. Save the grief for when it's necessary.
The rail lines and bridges arounds Pittsburgh are notoriously poorly maintained in general, not to mention lacking in normal measures to prevent rock slides (I know this firsthand as a regional resident). Highways and most hillside roads have nets and large fences or walls to keep such rocks out of traffic yet apparently NS thinks they don't need similar measures. Then there is the issue of them and W&LE not maintaining any of their bridges and simply having company inspectors rubber stamping very poor structures of all sorts. It was what led to a 7 car derailment in 2018 near Station Square that could have been disastrous as it crashed just above a fully occupied trolley station. Now NS wants to send double stack container cars and tankers carrying oil and natural gas over these same tracks and bridges. It all equals a disaster just waiting to happen. Rail oversight by the FRA needs to be immediately expanded because otherwise these companies will never look out for what's good for both their workers and the locals in residence around their lines. That all said, a real shame that the heritage unit was damaged in this incident.
Luckily none of the crew were killed! We hope the 2 that had to be extracted are going to be ok..... If they total this unit one hopes they repaint another to replace it!
She'll be out of commission for a while but the only real damage I can see is her pilot's messed up, probably some bad dents on the grounded side, and the handrails need replacing. This is not accounting for any possible internal damage but even then I'm sure she'll be up and running sometime in early 2022. Believe me, this looks bad, but its NOTHING compared to BNSF 4479 at Kismet back in 2006 which took an oncoming train head-on and looked like king kong used it like a stress ball with how badly it was mangled - half of the front end was straight up GONE. A year later that same locomotive was back on the rails looking pristine as ever with a new coat of paint to the point you'd think it was a completely different locomotive they just reassigned the number to, but nope - the mangled wreck somehow was able to be reconstructed and returned to service. NS 8099 basically has a fender bender compared to BNSF 4479.
As new details emerge about this derailment, I will post them here and in the video description.
One of my Facebook friends has a video of 8099 on her wheels and moving under her own power. The side that she was laying on shows damage to the handrails and other various damage.

Is the unit repaired now?
Is that locomotive damaged beyond repair???
I'm sure it will be repaired and it will look like new the day it was delivered. Glad the crew is fine.
I’ve seen some people saying it will be pained in NS colors after being repaired.

This might be the first ever major derailment involving a Heritage Unit.
