      I have a tr-1 Diamond 7 speed freewheel. The smallest cog has a spacer as part of it. It has a lock ring you tighten by hand. It has the plastic spacers like you have in video. This is for a Huffy 26" Outlier. I put it back together but now I can't get the hand tightened lock ring to reach thread to tighten. Largest cog fits fine. The next largest appears to fit fine but when reassembled it doesn't lay flat on spacer. I think this is why I can't eventually get lock ring into thread. Any suggestions? It's hard to explain here. Thanks in advance. Do you have an email I could send you pics of this?

    Thank you very much for showing this. This is literally the only video I found on the internet that shows how to disassemble the freewheel cogs. I needed to modify the freewheel to have 6 gears instead of 7, but all of them one step outwards (because the chain line was too slant after installing mid drive motor). This would not have been possible without this video.

      Hi. Did it work? I have a 9 speed cassette and need to make it 5 speed. Possible right?

    • @kleavenae
      @kleavenae 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@EducandarioGoiasOFICIAL If you have a cassette this video is not for you. This not not a cassette, this is a freewheel.
      But yes, it worked, I have 6 gears now instead of 7 and all a them 1 step outwards.
      But I'm not sure if it's possible to remove 4 gears, that sounds like a big difference. You can give it a try (if you have a freewheel and not a cassette).
      But you have to create spacers for the missing gears. I used an angle grider to cut off the teeth of the removed gear to use it as a spacer.

    RJ, thanks my freewheel came apart after a bit of cleaning, the lockring just fell off , its a pretty old bike 15 yrs old, so i ordered a new freewheel, but its interesting to see how it comes apart, i thought the spacer was missing on the smallest cog but it turns out its part of it just like on this video, some of the teeth are broken on the smallest cog too, but my cogs are ridiculously dirty ! thanks for the good advice 🙂

    Great - Found a solution to my problem. Shimano is no longer making its 14-34 six speed freewheel and my 34T cog is worn out. Going to buy thier 7 speed 14-34 and replace the cog on the six speed.

  • @I967
    @I967 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I came here to confirm that what I was doing was correct (unscrewing the smallest cog to take the freewheel fully apart). Thank you for the video.
    I was cleaning my 6 speed Shimano MF-TZ06 freewheel and out of curiosity I decided to take the cogs off. I used one chain whip and an old chain wrapped around a long piece of wood as a second chain whip.
    No chance. Absolutely no chance breaking the smallest cog loose.
    I almost broke my chain whip and that's when I decided to stop.
    I dumped the whole thing minus the clicky innards with bearings into benzine and into an ultrasonic cleaner. Brushed it a bit after sonic cleaning, then put it back together with grease.
    Unless you are an absolute cleaning fetishist, it's not necessary to disassemble the thing and I'm not buying two Park Tool whips.

    Cheers, l just disassembled two Shimano TZ21 freewheels and used the three spacers from the one to utilize on the other. The six spacers are all the same diameter, as this particular freewheel body is similar to a freehub body; as in it's not 'stepped', unlike the freewheel you're working on in the video. l chose one of the 18T cogs to use as my single speed gear. The 14T/lockring is holding it all together. I've 'locked off' any leftward chain travel using the L screw on the derailleur. Can't wait to see how she runs on the road. Very useful video, RJ

    Thank you for a really helpful video. I have a bike with a 14/16/18/21/24/28 freewheel. I am mostly interested in the low gear end as I have lots of hills to deal with. I bought a 14/16/18/21/24/34 freewheel. I can now see why there is such a big jump at the low gear end, because they have to fit the 14t to hold it all together! I miss the 28 cog. Is there and reason why I could not build the freewheel to be 14/18/21/24/28/34? Losing the 16 won't bother me. I rarely want to go that fast and if I do, it's downhill! Thanks for a great channel.

    So all I need to do is buy that FR-5.2 tool? Or should I get the TL FW30 tool?
    I wanna put a single freewheel cog on it, and also buy spacers for it, how do I find cogs for the freehub body I have?

    2:48, true story...1996 somewhere beneath the Pacific Ocean surface, some submarine sailors, in all their bordem, decided to have some competition fun. The mechanics of the boat put together this bolt/nut contraption which looked simple enough, and if you could break the nut free with just hand tools you would get your choice of a pack of cigs (yes back then you could smoke in shaft alley or the aux machinery room), can of chaw/dip/chew, smut magazine, or some sort of geedunk. One of the machinist even proved it could be done (he put a field jacked over his hands and hand tools). Sailor after sailor...even the few strong buff aux Navy divers couldn't get the same nut broken free. So here comes this nuke electronic tech...he asked for two adjustable wrenches...BAM! My dad, who learned from his dad, taught me the two spanner death grip lug breaking technique. So what did he choose for his prize? I'm not going to tell you :) Now for this Suntour Freewheel, I don't have two chain whips so I've secured the freewheel to a 2X4 held in my wood-working vice. I secured the freewheel by use of screws holding the largest inboard cog. I've allowed PB blaster to penetrate for 12 hours, lightly tapped with a small ball-peen on the face of the smallest cog (just to encourage some movement), and I've even used a larger ball-peen to tap the chain whip, again for mechanical shock movement...NADA! I am trying to loosen CCW as well. I'm about to put my MAP gas torch to it...just don't know if there are any plastic components w/in...wouldn't think so.

    RJ, wouldn't this be the easiest way to make a single speed? Just remove all the cogs but the one you need and use spacers. I've read of people using the spacers from other freewheels to make up for the unused cogs space. Also read about making pvc spacers. Seems a lot easier than adjusting the real hub/axle or redishing

    Is it possible to get new cogs for a reasonable price? I need a freewheel with a 12 tooth, and dont have $50 to spend on a whole new freewheel. I have access to lots of different frewheels at the local bike kitchen (none are natively 12t)

    Which brand is which? What brands and series use which style of construction? The screw on small sprocket does not require a special tool, which is probably why you chose to take it apart. That makes sense, but what brand is it?

    I have a 5 speed cassette with no lock ring on the outside and i used 2 chain whips to try and unwind that smallest gear counterclockwise and after a couple of efforts still cant budge it. I even bend the steel handle with so much force. I also used a heavy punch on the teeth to shock it loose but no go. Are any of these reverse threaded?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may come part differently. No, it wouldn't be reverse threaded, as it would unscrew as you pedaled.

      @@RJTheBikeGuy yeah i just went and tried again using a long steel tube to add length to the steel handle and ended up breaking a chain link with so much force! so dont know about this one. Going to leave this alone for now as have other ok cassettes.
      Can i swap the 5 speed for the 6 speed i have on the bike now knowing that the 6 speed thumb selector i only use 5 positions, or is the 6 position selector different proportion movement and thus wont align the derailer correctly?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      5 speed hubs are typically spaced at 120mm. 6-7 speed hubs are typically spaced 126mm or 130mm. I am guessing a standard 6 speed freewheel won't fit. Why are you trying to remore the cogs anyway. Just replace the freewheel. You can find 5 speed freewheels on ebay.

    • @xx3868
      @xx3868 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RJTheBikeGuy I like to recycle things and the 5 speed cassette seem to be in perfect condition but i already tried to fit it and couldnt get the gears to engage correctly due to the slightly diff spacing yet when i put them against each other they seem to have same gaps between gears. I wanted to make one good cassettee from a few however if the gears have built in spacing then it wont work. I have a source of old bikes i can get parts off so will just do that maybe.

    • @andreicristian1625

      Just keep the chain on a large cog and insert the chain whip trough the frame, and undo the small cog while holding your foot on the pedal, as it helps keep the frewheel from turning. So chain whip goes towards the back and the pedal towards the front

    Mechanics should take care to reassemble a freewheel with the cogs in the original orientation. If you accidentally flip a cog over, it might fit but run noisy and be harder to shift. Because spacers can be different widths, it's best to lay each part out in an orderly manner, so you don't forget which spacer goes with which cog.
