The amazing applause is well deserved probably however this audience didn’t realise that they were listening to what would become IMO the finest performance ever of this remarkable work. 60 years later it still hasn’t been surpassed and I seriously doubt it ever will be.

It took me many years to understand Elgar’s two symphonies. Now that I can appreciate his genius, I realise that no other composer can touch the soul as he does, the finale of this symphony is almost of another world, absolutely extraordinary. Thanks so much for posting this rare recording, the great Barbirolli (I only saw him once, in London) conducting the great B.S.O. at the top of their game.

The Boston Symphony, especially during the Leinsdorf years, loved playing for Sir John, an outstanding conductor and an entirely amiable person, and their applause for him and their refusal to stand and share the ovation he invariably garnered, was almost ostentatious as a display of preference.

I agree. There’s a huge difference between the average Leinsdorf and the great Barbirolli

The first movement is totally unlike his recording from the same year, this live performancehas so much more excitement

Well, I think maybe it is just because the Boston Symphony is a better orchestra than the Hallé.

I’m hearing so much more detail, especially woodwind passages, and the brass are just in another league from the Halle crew (much as they always played their hearts out for JB). This is just a rich, wonderfully paced & finely characterized performance from a conductor with the kind of expansive spirit and warm heart to deliver this symphony and convince listeners of its power and importance. Grateful to have heard it.

Elgar really looks like a rogue in one of his pics..like you could have a drink with him. His imagination had to be interstellar.

Well he was a bit of a lad in his youth. Liked jumping out of trees on his mates. But for someone self taught he's remarkable. But his music isn't English its universal.

Fine performance, indeed, even though I’m not a great “Marvelous John” devotee. Missing from this radio recording, sadly, is the sonorous, patrician announcing of the late, great William Pierce, a voice probably more identified with the BSO than any other ever will be. Let’s hope symphony orchestras and radio broadcasts may somehow survive a while yet.
