    I was raised in the late 1950s and early 1960s on performances by Boult, Barbirolli and Weldon of Elgar's works. How wonderful to hear an interpretation so grandiose, lyrical, passionate and inspired by a young handsome Frenchman. Lionel Bringuier is amazing here as is his interpretation of Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 6, also on TH-cam.
    I await eagerly for more of the same.

    Elgar - the master of the mixture of the noble and the melancholy. Once heard, readily
    identifiable and returned to with pleasure. Thank you for this particular very special
    pleasure from Koln (Cologne).

      Nice description from Koln in Cologne.. Thank you.. I find a lot of Elgar's music beautiful yes but often with heart wrenching sadness and poignancy...
      This symphony, his Elgar concerto, and Enigma Variations.. Just three examples

    • @TimLake-tg7hg
      @TimLake-tg7hg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      His Cello Concerto.. That should have read..
      Even something a little joyous. Like Chanson du nuit has a bit of a sad air to it... I must also say that I find that melancholy theme in his work a bit addictive.

      @@TimLake-tg7hg The English tendency towards melancholy seeps through Elgar's
      music, relieved by the composer's ability to write stirring finales. The ending of the
      Enigma Variations is a good example as the composer's own theme brings this
      fine work to a triumphant conclusion.

    Thanks for uploading this. I had never listened to Elgar before today, but he really is interesting. I only just started listening to the first movement but it sounds different from anything I've heard before, yet similar to everything, kind of like a remix of it. Thank you!

    Missed it when premiering! Beautiful! Edward Elgar: Symphony No.1 was highly acclaimed at the very beginning, nothing has changed since. English composer, wonderful French conductor Lionel Bringuier I like very much and impeccable WDR Symphony Orchestra - irresistible pleasure! Streaming it again while writing a comment.

    Lionel Bringuier stood in for Sir Andrew Davis. This symphony may have been relatively new to him, but he really has the measure of it and his obvious enthusiasm is infectious. A very heartwarming and well-played performance from the orchestra.

    Alongside the Walton First, one of the two greatest British symphonies, and this interpretation is one of the best I've heard. So, I'm wondering ... might we someday hear the Walton First from this same crew? (Including Maestro Bringuier! He's a real talent!)

    The theme that introduces the symphony and recurs in the last movement is the greatest ever written in a symphonic work but then again Elgar’s masterpiece is among the greatest of all time anyway. 😁 Personally I think a slightly faster tempo would be better, however overall it’s beautifully performed with excellent sound. Thanks for the upload.

    As a Brit, this is almost superb music. Its almost as good as the Germans. I love the sad and noble sentiment nonetheless.

    • @davebarclay4429
      @davebarclay4429 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Almost as good as the Germans"??? The first performance was conducted by Hans Richter who was Austro-Hungarian, educated in Vienna, a protégé of Wagner and knew a thing or two about German music. (He had conducted the premiers of Brahms' Second and Third Symphonies and Bruckner's Fourth and Eighth among others). He introduced Elgar's First to the players of the London Symphony Orchestra with the words "Gentlemen, let us now rehearse the greatest symphony of modern times, written by the greatest modern composer - and not only in this country."

    • @57monks
      @57monks 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Almost??? ‘This is superb from first note to last. An absolutely glorious piece of music wonderfully conducted. The love for this symphony is clearly obvious on the conductor’s face.

    My history as a listener and observer of orchestral performances is that great music has often played stiffly and rigidly. The great musicians can do that. However, in doing so the atmosphere misses an element for the intensity of a work, body language reflecting the intensity of the work, not just skill being displayed. This orchestra added the body language. It was a bit scary watching it. Who might get poked in the eye or slapped upside the head. This added more spice to the performance to go with the intense body language.
