  • Hewing 6"x6" black cherry with the Gransfors Bruk broad axe. Using both left and right handed axes. This log was sitting on a log pile for at least two years. All the sap wood was rotten. The heart wood hewed nicely.

    Gute Arbeit.

Nice! I was just wondering: are these latest two videos by any chance affected by my suggestion to slow down occasionaly and show parts of the process in detail? Anyway, I think it’s great that you did that now. And I also want to ask: is there a reason why you don’t do any scoring before the hewing?

Thank you. Yes, these latest two videos were slowed down at your suggestion. There was no real purpose to me not scoring. I did not score doing any of the faces. There wasn't much to remove, and the wood was paring off so nicely. However, I did have to work back and forth a lot more because of not scoring.

I’m glad to see you found my suggestions useful!
There are different ways to hew, of course. I’ve seen hewing without scoring before, but on a pine log the last time. That didn’t look very practical because of the long fibres. A bit different from cherry. Maybe I’ll try to skip the scoring cuts some time to test the difference. For one thing, there’s no risk of ending up with a smaller beam because of scoring cuts running too deep …
Looking forward to your next video!

@@olalindberg833 Good information about the pine log. By not scoring on this cherry, I had to be sure to not try to take off too much at a time, otherwise the wood wanted to tear. The times I accidentally dug too deep, I had to change directions to stop it cutting too deeply. Thanks for your comments. It's good to hear from you.

Just happy to see some nice hewing popping up on TH-cam, if my comments are helpful that’s great.
I just started a new channel myself, I’ll probably do a bit of hewing there down the line. Felling trees for firewood at the moment though. It’s here if you want to take a look!

I can tell you doing this is super fun. But man, it takes like 147,657.85 times longer than using a chainsaw.

Haha! I was thinking it was 10,000 times longer. But I think you're estimate is more accurate.

I tried it once to use a chainsaw to prepare for the final hewing. Takes longer. One try and I only use the axe after that. We have very nice pine in Sweden though. Log at my “Hewing yet another log” and you’ll see. 😀

I am going to use this timber with a few others to build a timber frame saw horse.
