Hewing a Black Cherry Log. Part 1 Rough.

Part 1 - rough hewing. Part 2 will show the fine hewing for the 4x6 timber. About 1/3 of the log is rotten. The log is at least 2 years since being cut, but it's still pretty green. It is a little splintery, but I think even very green black cherry is that way. The Home Depot axe (5lb) was terrible for joggling. It had too much wedge I think. It wanted to angle inward to deeply. Also, it was a ...

      Hahah! Thank you! I agree 100%. My neighbor was confused when I refused his offer of his log splitter. I did 12 of these over the course of the week and am kinda sad they are all split. Thanks for the comment.

      @@MountainHighTimberAndStone I have my difficulties with hard maple and can see why workbenchs are made from it, just completed an oak slabs top using two 7' x4"x15" and joined with two sides 4x8x30" hopefully to keep the slabs from changing too much. If it wasn't for the excessive amount of mortise and tenons the project might of completely been discarded, also had to use 6 lag screws that I didn't intend. Greatest challenge was having two perfectly flat surfaces to join/glue together but with patience anythings possible. Amazing how useful a well oiled farm jack can be with such projects, needing a gantry crane more and more these days.

      Thank you sir. Styling the beard this way is a lost art and likely won't be coming back any time soon, because although the Sumerian's perceived the long, curly, well oiled beard as a symbol of masculinity, status and wisdom, today's version of masculinity almost seems to require a look that says: "I have better things to do than curl my beard:" a philosophy of which my mom would have absolutely agreed, may she rest in peace.

    I can tell you doing this is super fun. But man, it takes like 147,657.85 times longer than using a chainsaw.

    • @MountainHighTimberAndStone
      @MountainHighTimberAndStone 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha! I was thinking it was 10,000 times longer. But I think you're estimate is more accurate.

      I tried it once to use a chainsaw to prepare for the final hewing. Takes longer. One try and I only use the axe after that. We have very nice pine in Sweden though. Log at my “Hewing yet another log” and you’ll see. 😀

    Ever inspiring as it's been a few months since I've had the chance to make a few timbers and my failed attempts using aspen, closely splitting in half a full 4 ft during the drying process but always a lesson to be learned with different material. Thank you for sharing your efforts and is greatly appreciated.

    Nice! I was just wondering: are these latest two videos by any chance affected by my suggestion to slow down occasionaly and show parts of the process in detail? Anyway, I think it’s great that you did that now. And I also want to ask: is there a reason why you don’t do any scoring before the hewing?

    • @MountainHighTimberAndStone
      @MountainHighTimberAndStone 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. Yes, these latest two videos were slowed down at your suggestion. There was no real purpose to me not scoring. I did not score doing any of the faces. There wasn't much to remove, and the wood was paring off so nicely. However, I did have to work back and forth a lot more because of not scoring.

    • @olalindberg833
      @olalindberg833 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m glad to see you found my suggestions useful! There are different ways to hew, of course. I’ve seen hewing without scoring before, but on a pine log the last time. That didn’t look very practical because of the long fibres. A bit different from cherry. Maybe I’ll try to skip the scoring cuts some time to test the difference. For one thing, there’s no risk of ending up with a smaller beam because of scoring cuts running too deep … Looking forward to your next video!

    • @MountainHighTimberAndStone
      @MountainHighTimberAndStone 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@olalindberg833 Good information about the pine log. By not scoring on this cherry, I had to be sure to not try to take off too much at a time, otherwise the wood wanted to tear. The times I accidentally dug too deep, I had to change directions to stop it cutting too deeply. Thanks for your comments. It's good to hear from you.
