  • This week on the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast we cover a winless opening of the San Jose Sharks 2024-25 season, and a surprise Mike Grier press conference. What does Grier have to say about Will Smith, Macklin Celebrini, and the beginning of the season? We cover it all here.
First, we discuss the development plan for Will Smith as described by Mike Grier. (02:52) We discuss load management, Smith's recent play, and what we think the goals are for this year for Smith.
Second, Grier provided some clarity on the severity of the Macklin Celebrini injury. How long can the San Jose Sharks expect to be without their young superstar? (17:15)
We cover the AHL play of Luca Cagnoni and Kasper Halttunen, and whether Grier thinks they stick in the AHL the whole year or get sent back to the CHL. (22:50)
Grier gave a quick update on the Quentin Musty/Sudbury Wolves situation. (31:25)
Finally, we discuss some of the bright spots in a so far winless season. Toffoli, Eklund, Granlund and Zetterlund are providing s spark in an otherwise poor opening for the Sharks. (43:00)
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!

The Sharks will get another top 5 pick this year. Maybe even another #1.

Perspective, they’ve had 2 home games. 20% of their October games will have been at home. That’s hard on any young player. Warsofsky will be fine, Smith will be fine, it will be okay. People just need to touch grass for a bit.

Bring back Askarov celebrations! Hockey is missing personality from their players. Also we all need to chill on the pessimism - team is not built to win now. Process over results at this point. R-E-L-A-X

If the Sharks' plan was always to sit out Cellebrini and Smith for some games, does Mike Grier not think that they are competing for the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year? The dynamic duo won't be beating Michkov if they get fewer points and action due to a slow development plan. Maybe MG is protecting them from chronic losing syndrome and realizes Sharks will not win 50% of their games and reach playoffs, so they will be able to watch the veterans re-group after losing rather than immerse themselves in a big losing season. It provides some detachment from what looks like another season of missing the playoffs.

He told the team he wouldn’t report if they drafted him, would you risk drafting a player who has all the leverage once he’s your prospect?

@@HitmanHockeyCardsSo why was the rumour out there? Grier defenitly played it safe and it was the right move. You don't risk a 4th overall Pick.
