  • This week’s topic started with us wondering what 10-year-old sports car we would buy. It turned into a discussion about one of our favorites from a decade ago, the Z4 M Coupe. With Michael Prichinello and Zac Moseley from The Classic Car Club Manhattan.

Ford Fiesta ST. It's not old, but used ones are on the market everywhere for mid to high teens. If you haven't driven one don't count it off just because front wheel drive and cheap. It wont be the fastest lap time anywhere but it makes you want to take the back way home every day.

Guys, that turn from the hip feeling Prichinello was talking about ... I could never explain the sensation, but to me that is the most exciting gifts a good handling sporty car could give me, as a driver. I have only felt it once before, and believe it of not that was in an 87' Honda Prelude. I think the secret is in the long front hood and the driver sitting further back.--- Any other cars that you know of that fit this type of entertainment? I'll be in the market in a few months.

Z3 M Coupe for me its the peach, because of the looks, the rear E30 suspensión, the S54 motor and the overall drive.. had the z4m but sold it because of the Z3MC!
S2K is another great machine.. it has the best shifter of its class 👌

Funny because when I bought it, I knew in 8-10 years , it would be the last 'real' sports car around. Nat. Aspirated, straight 6 pulling in a perfect straight line, and responsive as hell with perfect balance. The first time I broke the rear end on purpose and drifted 100 yards, it came back so natuarally that all you can do is smile. Nothing else felt like that. Not a 911, not a cayman, and on and on. I want to put it in context with older sports cars in terms as feel…but I haven't driven enough to do so. Like a modern 67 stingray with modern steering, suspension, and just enough gruff..

I own a 2007 Z4 M Coupe and a 2002 Z3 M Coupe and I have to say they are both amazing cars in different ways. Aftermarket Clutch Delay Valve (CDV) is a must in the Z4M. It's much more refined than the Z3M Coupe and also does not have bottom end rod-bearing issues like the early S54 cars. If you can't afford a Z3MC for $45,000+, then get a Z4MC. In the numbers game and in reliability the Z4MC is a better car. Less wild, more refined, faster, and easier to live with everyday. I'll create a video channel on here with detailed repair info on both of these cars and show how affordably you can own a BMW Z sports car.

2008 BMW 335i sedan, sports package, 6 speed. Easy, cheap, and reliably make 400whp with 2k and about 4-5 mods. Motor, trans, fuel system can handle the power easily. 4 doors makes everyone happy. BMW drives, well, like a BMW. Have a little more money to spend? 2009 CTS-V sedan or wagon if you can find one. Want something less practical? C6 Z06. Those would be my top 3.

Crossfire. I've bought one, it's rare, looks stunning and still very modern, cruises like a proper GT, has more than enough speed (6.7s -60 & 155mph) great engine (3.2 SLK V6) and handles really well, even if it feel so rather numb to control. It has plenty of equipment, it's comfortable and all this costs very little money now.

The pendulum motion you described happens because it's exactly opposite as you described. You are sitting closer to the rear wheels so you are at the end of the pendulum which is pronounced. Small input in front of you, large output behind you. It makes for a feeling of as you stated, rotating. A car that truly rotates on it's center is like driving a bumper-car.

You don't get them in the US and they stopped building them in 2006 but my choice is the Vauxhall VX220 turbo (Opel Speedster in the rest of Europe). Mid engine Lotus chassis, GM 2.0 turbo bullet proof power plant. Weights 930kg, half a tonne lighter than your average Porches, Ferrari's and your Z4. Totally out grips the supercars. Bucket loads of feedback. Standard 0-62mph 4.7. The average mpg for me was 35. On a run through Germany 44mpg siting mostly at 85-90 mph. The engine is very tuneable for reasonable cost and 300 bhp will give you a torquey delivery and 0-62 around 3.5 (depending on tyres). Nice turbos are fetching £12-14,000. Its a performance bargain. You can drive it quickly at 90-95% in any weather, on any road. The last 5% requires a lot more concentration 8) Nothing will match it on a twisty B road. I've had two and I'll most certainly be having a third. Spend £10k tweaking a VX in the right places and you end up with something very special.

The car that got me into cars was my old zx3. I lived in it, and I had to fix it weekly. It ate my paychecks and screwed me out of a job once. But god damn was the suicidal ideation on backroads fun. Going 80 in a 35 in a car the rattles and screams at you really gets your blood pumping, especially when you truly are ready to die.

S2000 is a pick for a 10 year old car and one you've talked about on this show a bunch. I'd love to get my hands on that modified Z4M though. F20C and S54 are the pinnacle for naturally aspirated inline 4s and 6s. I don't think we'll see them again soon.

/Drive my pick would be a 996 mk ii, ideally a 40th anniversary (jahre) by not necessarily as all the mods can be done on a standard car. Add a roll cage, good tires, adjust geometry (on lowered sports suspensions or GT3 suspensions) and you have a car that is as great to drive as a 911R with less power but still super fast. Some 40th anniversary have been converted to GT3 competitors android are tracked and traced. Awesome car.

Does the Z4M have the same frame crack issues the E46 chassis has?
I have read that on these the sway bar mounts rip out of the chassis and have to weld them back in, specially if you use stiffer sway bars. You have to reinforce the area by welding sheet metal on the chassis to prevent it from cracking again. Also the chassis is weak enough that you can tell if its been tracked. If the panel gaps are off, assuming it has never been in a collision, chances are the car has seen hard track use, the chassis will actually tweak enough to throw the panel gaps off.
BMW has had a very bad reputation with frames tweaking, bending, cracking on normal day to day use, especially 10 years ago. Its like if you hit a pot hole, BAM, chassis is bent. Mini coopers, Z8, all E46 chassis have weak frames. I have seen E46 M3s were the previous owner had covered the wide frame cracks with duct tape and painted over to hide them during a sale. Eventually the cracks can get so bad that the rear sub-frame will actually completely separate from the chassis. How fun would that be on a HWY in a high speed turn? Some of these you have to cut the entire floor board out and weld a new one in. Very expensive to do and may not be worth it on a cheap used car in today prices.
For the E90 M3 they redesigned the chassis but still managed to find a way to screw things up with that model. Rod bearings prematurely wear and fail, resulting in catastrophic engine failure. People are recommending changing the rod bearings every 50,000 miles! E60 M5 has the same issues as it uses the same bearing sizes. I can't see any of these appreciating in value like the old ones. If I have to weld sheet metal to the frame to reinforce it so that it won't crack again, its not factory original anymore and non reversible damage.

This is total BS. The best 10 year old sports car one could buy is obviously a Porsche Cayman S.

    • @robertwilsoniii2048
      @robertwilsoniii2048 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, when we're talking 10 year old sports cars in general, nobody said anything about a track. Given price, comfort, and driving experience, the Cayman seems like the best 10 year old sports car (not race car, sports car).
If you're talking aftermarket racing, well then that's entirely different, and there are hundreds of cars that can work well, but the Porsche is good to go right off the showroom floor; it's like a 300hp Scion frs, but nicer. In comparison the z4 feels like a small Mustang.

Maybe one day an m will be mine
think the coupe looks great though, we need a coupe shape with a hard top retractable roof, best of both worlds, probably not possible to make and it would be too heavy, the e89 looks ok but still not as great as the e86 coupe
Great to see the z4 getting some love, rwd, great engine, classic looks with the huge bonnet (I'm British lol) given those features it's not really talked about much

The z4 3.0si coupe is an excellent alternative to the Z4 M coupe since it's 200 lbs lighter (all in the front end) with a magnesium block engine, and still excellent power. The 3.0si coupe is one of the lightest BMW rwd sports cars.

A little over a year ago I bought an '07 Z4 M Coupe, black on extended black leather. An unknown past and 100,000 miles on it. I drove it before I bought it and what a beast (lol, especially with the Sport button on). I LOVE THIS CAR so much - I've had a lot of Mustangs including a Saleen and also owned an '04 Honda S2000. All shite compared to this god of a car. I've never driven or been in a car with so much soul. I will pay for and replace anything and everything this car needs to keep it for a very long time. Engine blows? So what, I'll replace it.
Reliability? For many years I avoided used BMW's cus I "heard" they were unreliable. Dead wrong. 107k and 10 years old and this thing has been faultless. It literally drives like it's brand new and I've had not one problem of ANY kind with it.
Lastly, if you own one of these do yourself a favor and get the Stromung mufflers. Not too loud at all for this old guy but still quite beefy.

    As a Z4M driver I agree, though I might be a bit biased ;-)
But that S54 engine is just a masterpiece, I honestly don't think there is any other engine in that price range which can beat it. Good power output, driveability, decent torque, revs to 8.000RPM, sounds awesome, decent fuel consumption (11-13l/100km), reliable, not to heavy
