I taught two people to hang glide in the late 1980s. I sure wish I had this kind of instructional training at that time. It would have benefited my students greatly. And certainly a tandem flight or so to introduce flying at many hundreds of feet AGL is of great benefit.
There was this kind of training then here in the flat land of platform towing . Finding a practice hill was always difficult for ground handling .. Transitioning to tandem tow launch was then easy as was landing . Finally learning to thermal and finding lift and LZ . Thanks for reminding to have FUN
I'm so glad to see you teaching on flat ground. My lesson (at Green Dragons) here in London outskirts was sprinting directly down a fairly steep hill, with the hang glider. And yes, by the way, I crashed. The instructor kept saying, stick out your chest, stick out your chest, while I'm shitting myself because I've never done this before, and I'm sprinting with this heavy thing down hill, top speed. I accidentally pulled the hanglider towards me, rather than away, and I ploughed straight into the ground. I fucked up his expensive harness, almost broke my collar bone, and 2 years later, I'm still suffering a pain down the back of my thigh, because I tried to rescue his glider from slamming into the ground. I totally tore my ligaments and muscles in my right leg. Now I'm a bit intimidated in ever trying this again.
Ouch! That was a terrible Learning experience to be sure. There are probably other schools with a better progression, as you saw in this video. Another alternative is to go to a flight park where you can fly tandem within an instructor. That way you got a feel for flying and how the glider behaves without having to take on the difficult task of launching. Good luck!
There are good instructors out there. It's best to find a reputable school that has been around for quite a while. Single-instructor 'schools' should be suspect unless they have a very good national reputation. There are only a handful of very good schools in the USA that could be recommended. Have no idea about schools in the UK or EU.
Ellenville, good remembrances with Tony Covelli around 2003. Now, I am returning to recycle and fly again. Nice to see the new generation following the parents footsteps. Thanks, very well done instructions for the new flyers.
I am 81, took up HG at age 45, had an extremely poor teacher,. I flew HG for 15 yrs. and then switched to PG and at age 80 quit PG . Just like building a house the foundation is a key element to a proper project. In spite of not the best of instructors I only broke one arm while HG and that was from landing in a field with no wind sock and no other indicators of wind direction and a thermal kicking off on the last 20 ft of height burnoff.
Whow... I can´t believe what I´m seeing. Please correct me... Minute 3:49 to 4:00... is there a small bird teaching this student how to do it right? seems to start flying and flaring nicelly as the student does the run.
No one is more surprised by how many views this has than me! But I think hang gliding is an interesting subject to a lot of people, and the fundamentals of how to teach something are applicable to anything and everything…
He just showed up one day... and stuck around for a few weeks (until the weather turned cold). He would get really close, and eat the bugs that we stirred up while walking in the grass. We named him Jerry. :-)
Hi. Great video. I was just wondering what harnesses you were using on those videos. They look really well padded and comfortable for the standing/supine position. Is it the Charly Knee hangers (Finsterwalder) or some other type? I am really interested in purchasing one. Cheers and happy landings!
Ryan, I like the steps in training...was going to start trying and learn...where is this training taking place and contact info for training?? I know whether it is gymnastics...or dog training...the above steps are the best way. Thanks for your response
Eu bem que gostaria de aprender mas aqui onde moro não há nada parecido, voar como um passarinho é meu sonho, tenho cinquenta e nove anos e ainda pretendo realizar esse sonho, nem que seja o último.
Jose Reynoso it is Fly High Hang Gliding, in Ellenville NY. www.flyhighhg.com. However the owner (and myself, who made this video) have since retired from instruction. Check out Lookout Mountain Hang Gliding for a great destination/school that teaches very similar to this. Thanks for watching!
About 5000 euros in Russia (~2000 for the glider, ~2000 for the harness and emergency chute and some extra money for smaller goodies like helmet, bags, radio, etc.). Other expenses are negligible, unless you pick some expensive service like towing with an aircraft.
@@RyanVoight I've always thought about heading over there and getting some hang gliding or paragliding lessons. We've been climbing in the Gunks for decades and have property below the Yellow Wall in the Trapps. Maybe we'll pop over the hill one of these days. Thanks.
@@bonefishboards I've kinda retired from teaching, but there is still a school in Ellenville. There's also a school in Middletown at Randal Airport where you could do a tandem flight and really get an idea what hang gliding is like. Careful because it's engrossing ;-) The flying in Ellenville is best when the wind is from the NW 5-10 mph so that's when you're most likely to see people out there (year round!). At the end of the day we land in the field on Hang Glider Rd in Ellenville if you want to check it out. Friday (day after Thanksgiving) looks like it might be good and I'm hoping to fly... happy to answer questions or anything helpful...
@@RyanVoight Excellent beginning teaching strategies and techniques! Yeah, bet all those dislikes are from those who subscript to Don Burns' style of launching, with much too high a pitch angle. Look up www.andesengineering dot com for his description and reasoning of a 'proper' nose-high launch technique. He and his students could never do what your vid demonstrates. His launch technique creates too much drag with the glider at such a high Cl.

This is without doubt the best way of teaching a student in my opinion and reminds me of the ground handling work I did when learning to paraglide.

am i the only one that noticed the little bird flying with you and stopped when you stopped around the 4 minute mark? thats adorable
Scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else had noticed too
Nicely shot, good script, good drone usage. Nice primer for new instructors. Yes, please do another. Thanks!
