And Thad Jones would pass away the following year, August 20, 1986 (aged 63) Such a pair of losses. To coin a phrase, If there's a jazz heaven, you know they got a hell of a band. The Big Wheel Keeps On Turnin' ~
Superb, enticing, relentless, remorseful, nostalgic, those wonderful, loyal, solid friends, that endless tradition, that quality of performance, musicianship, power, love...
Thad Jones is the man had the pleasure to work for him with the Basie orchestra, subbing for baritone great Johnny William's for a week ,and let me tell you it was going to the promise land
Omg this is what a big band should sound like. Mr. Basie, who passed away the year before, was looking down and smiling. Shout choruses have given way to more solos and less ensemble playing. For me, this is as good as it gets.
Might want to dig Harold Jones who anchored Basie unit for several Chico O’Farrill showcase arrangements in mid-60’s, earning album credit mentions of Count himself. Saying, “Harold has really brought us together” is sole member cited. Cats in the band said no pressure to take material led to some band favorites and it shows. The O’Farrill arrangements of standards is perhaps high water for covers.
Amazing performance. This is what big band jazz is all about. Wish the Basie Band would record this on a new CD without a live audience. The 2 versions of "The Heat's On" available on CD are not up to par compared to this performance. Kenny Hing's solo is his best version of this classic. God I miss the Count...James, Columbus, OH
This is the best version I have heard, and Kenny sounding great. I find concerts bring out the best in Basie. Dennis Mackerel is a great big band drummer - wonderful break before the crescendo. A pleasure that he is now leading the Band.
well personally I think Thad's conducting is a bit redundant and as for the drummer, he aint bad but I think he's a bit heavy handed, it ain't jazz/rock; can't listen to Basie without hearing the long list top drummers he had working for him.
@@NINT3ND0masterit does feel a little less heavy because of the fact that the tenor solo is different and the piano plays chords during it. The original is hot with a hot drummer! So the drummer tried to play like that! You are right but I see where he’s coming from

Great musicians are fone. Great musics stand are with us fortunately.
Great performance! Thad Jones - one of the great big band conductors of all time!
Amazing that Freddie Green is still playing with them 50 years later!

懐かしい💙💙💙👌✌️👍❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗
Dennis Makrel is my favorite Basie drummer. I think that is Lynn Seaton on bass.
Thanks! I was looking for the drummer's name. He's awesome here!

Have to play this song for jazz this year, hopefully we could get everything on point like these guys can. Jesus they are good
The absolute mad lad himself. Thad Jones. Whatta legend
Damn! If I had a band I'd want it to sound this good. That was a lucky audience and I'll bet they knew it.
This tune really cooks!!🎉😂❤
I know right! Such a classic
Ascoltare la bella musica e un piacere
look, this is gold you've been looking for
Dennis driving the bus!
Very splendid!
awesome!!!!
It's baby Dennis Mackerel!!
It's the longing of the big band they're doing.
Does anyone have this whole concert with Count Basie Orchestra Nancy Wilson and Joe Williams?

Denis turns up the wick.
某ベイシーのS原さんは現場にいたのでしょう。
このバンドが山野ビッグバンドコンテストに出たら何位くらいなんやろ?
オモロイw💦
...if Basie did it seated at his piano - primarily because the guys knew what to do and when - why is Thad up there dancing and gesticulating?
😢Where is Basie?
who is the 1st trumpet?
Byron Stripling, I am sure he wants that last note back....
Byron Stripling!
🌱💛🌾🙄
drummer was decent .my favorite however will be Butch Miles at Montreaux.
I thought this would be Glen Frey cover.
You obviously know bugger all about big band drumming......he's tremendous.
Tony Berry he’s a stupid drummer
Tremendous!
Dhruv the Percussion Maniac Fuck off

I think you're wrong about the drummer. He's great.
He’s a stupid drummer
Dude what, it’s a heavy handed song! How could you.
The drummer is a little heavy, true-in his fills. And the Basie band never needed a conductor. Good tenor solo.
