    Thanks for posting!
I house rule that the colored die determines the number of spaces to add to move the horse. This gives both dice meaning individually.
I've run and played this game at gaming conventions in the Midwest. The players rave about how realistic and fun this game is. You win the game with the gambling aspect not collecting purse money owed to the owner being of the horse that came in the top 4. With the right rolls, jockeying the horse, it's possible for the long shots to win, but like in real racing, it doesn't happen very often. One of the realistic aspects of the game the players enjoyed was how the horses fanned out across the home stretch coming out of the turn. How outside post horses at the start are at a disadvantage headed to the first turn. How horses would get nosed at the wire. Having to check up before exhausting all movement due to turn order and track position, particularly in the corners, and jockey skill (veteran or apprentice). Finally. Bankroll management is key! The game takes a bit of time to play and by race 4, some players give up, either tired of the game or flat broke.
Fun, strategic game that is enjoyable even for someone who knows little or nothing about horse racing.

Chris, I like your house rule with the colored die. I plan to try that. Your description of the races makes me want to go put my game on the table and start rolling right now! Great commentary.

Hello, I am attempting to modify this game to make it even more realistic. While I think the differing move allowances for each horse are interesting, I don’t necessarily think they accurate reflect how real horses run. I don’t think horses run further (or less far) per “turn” due to more energy or something similar, represented by the move allowance, but due to running style. For example, “S” horses don’t run fewer “spaces” per turn in the beginning because they’re less energetic, but because they simply want to hang far behind the pace. I think a better way to represent this would be to make all other running styles, other than “E”, dependent on the number of “spaces” run per turn by the E’s. In other words, if the leading E running style horses in the race run about 9 spaces on a particular turn, the E/P’s would run just behind those, the P’s in the middle, and the S’s all far behind.... and then over time, these roles will switch as the race progresses. As it is now, even owners of S types will try to outrun E’s even in the beginning of the race, which is unrealistic. Hope this made sense.

@@historyandhorseplaying7374 the horses are already made to its running style. The leads, pressers, stalkers, and closers will run to form. The "white" die will add to each horses allowable moves evenly so that doesn't change a horses running style. If a horse hits a bonus during a turn, then the horse can move an extra 3 spaces. Now, if you want to make a house rule that allows you to hold on to bonus moves, then that can possibly work for you. I'm currently working on a 3yo season and a 6-race program.

In the copy that I have the "house rule" you refer to is not a house rule it is in the rulebook. I mean in the rulebook it says add the white die to the movement but its the same thing.

Earle...your previous video had inspired me to take out and play "APBA Saddle Racing"...now this video has me taking out and playing my "Win, Place & Show" game. Great job with these videos (simple, yet thorough).... and thanks for inspiration. Pete

I played this game with a friend for days on end. With only 2 players we concerned ourselves with the betting aspect exclusively. We even had to write up new denominations as we had figured out which horse was most likely to win each race. In the end we were placing billion dollar bets.

Earle, you do a superb and thorough job explaining the rules of this game. I wish every game reviewer took the time to explain the details the way you do (most just gloss over their game reviews and spend half their time boringly opening the box).
I do not care for the bonus die rule and see little point to it, but maybe that's just a blind spot for me. I never fool with the gambling aspect but jump straight to the races. I use Bruno Cross's charts as a guide, but modify his numerical values on my own index cards in order to fit the track I prefer, which is the smaller track of the Quarter Pole horse race game (60 spaces). Don't care for the WPS track as it looks less like a real track than Quarter Pole's. I use the fine horses from the Turfmaster game for racing. Since I own 3 Turfmaster games, I own 24 horses, many of which I painted uniquely in order to create enough different horses to run tournament-style races, as follows: 4 heats of six horses each, the top 3 horses of each heat facing off in two semifinal heats, with the top 3 of those two heats heats facing off in a 6-horse final for the championship. The Turfmaster horses look great swinging into a turn and, as you can see, the look of the game is very important to me. My horse's index cards are advantageous to me in a way neither Bruno's charts nor the original game's are, for I took the time to number each furlong for easy reading in a 10-furlong race. Without my own index cards, I'd always be getting confused as to which furlong I'm on. I've inked the cards in colors to match the color of the horses, again to avoid confusion when rolling dice. The whole effect is quite colorful and interesting. No two races are alike, and it's fun watching a front runner like Seattle Slew match up with a great closer like Native Dancer and powerful horses like Secretariat or Citation. Other horses I've modified from Bruno's charts are Spectacular Bid, Ruffian, Man o' War, Seabiscuit, Phar Lap, etc. Occasionally I'll run a match race as I recently did with Seabiscuit and War Admiral, War Admiral reversing the real-life outcome and beating the Biscuit by a nose at the wire. Sometimes my family plays, sometimes I must go it alone. Anyone who's still with me has got to be thinking, "This guy's got too much time on his hands." True. I just retired (finally, after 42 years). I wrote this hopefully not to bore anyone too badly, but just in case other players might be interested in hearing how one guy uses this great system, just as Chris Payne did 5 days ago (see below). As an old APBA baseball fan (Koufax: Grade A&C, XY for strikeouts, Z for control) I must say I enjoy the horses even more.

Good point about other reviewers wasting half the video taking the bloody thing out of the box. I never do understand why they think this is so fascinating.

Is there mistake here? The shite die determines the first horse to move, right? Then the colored die is the amount of the move ?

He has it wrong in the video. According to the instructions, if you get the “bonus” move, you get 3 spaces extra.

Seems a bit complicated and fiddly for the depth of the game. Lots of little modifiers and little rules. Any reason to play this over Long Shot or Camel up?

Tabletop Baseball Plus how do the horses bought on eBay look on this board? I'm thinking about getting some for my copy that is the same as yours. He sells horses with and without bases. I like yours without bases. Which would you recommend for this board? Thanks and great channel 😀

I think the horses from ebay would look just as good as the do on the Apba board, but they are much smaller.
