    This was my dad's favourite game as a kid. I've bought the 70s version for Xmas day but I was dreading figuring out the rules. This was insanely helpful! Thank you!

    An excellent explanation of the game, I thought Dark Warrior would win. I have the large box version with the metal horses. Thanks for uploading the video.

    Two years since my last viewing of your video and posting a comment, and now here I am, at it again!
    We pulled this one out for a run at the weekend. The version is I have goes back to 1978, plastic horses and jigsaw type board.
    As you said in your video, this is an old game so don't expect any fancy game mechanics, but I must admit, we did have fun. I don't like the board however, having to flip it over from training track to race circuit has always been a bugbear of mine, your older version is better, but a totally separate board would be best of all.
    With some heavy betting before the Off, the potential winnings, including the purse, was pretty high, but I should have known, such things wouldn't concern me, with my usual skill at betting, the horses I backed are expected to finish the race sometime on Friday.
    So despite its age, Totopoly can still deliver fun and enjoyment. A new versions would not be a bad thing, with the amounts of money spent on purchasing horses and various bills being given a hefty increase to make it more realistic for the present day, but even an older copy is still well worth picking up if you see one.

    Great that you made this video. I had a lot of fun playing this game with my mates in Melbourne, Australia from the years 1979 to 1983, from when I was 14 y.o. to 18 y.o. My favourite horse? Dark Warrior.

    My brother and I played this endlessly back in the early sixties, our version was in a large box, big enough for the folded board, which was printed on both sides. We had our own race meetings with names of horses taken from the daily paper racing pages lol. So many memories.

    Played this brilliant game early 80s...friends an i would just walk the training side of board with bare minimum basics avoiding all the comoplicated stuff.We just auctioned horses (so sometimes one player would pay ALL his money for one strong black horse and another would spread his wealth over maybe three lesser nags. All the cash paid went into winners pot. The race was where the magic happened for us😊 and winning horse won it all.

    Just bought a 1949 version on Ebay. Perfect condition and also apparently never played before. We had the 1970s version as a kid but we didn't play it very often which was a shame as I really liked it. This video has been very helpful so thanks for uploading.
    In my version, the final paragraph of the instructions says as follows:
    "WINNER - The winner of the game shall be the winner of the race, irrespective of whether he has the most money at the end of the game, as a player without a horse in the first three may have had a heavy bet on the winner, and thereby finish the game with more money than the winner of the race."
    That doesn't make any sense to me. For one thing, what is the point of betting on the outcome if there is no reward? (Also clearly they never expected females to play!) Also what is the point of giving the winning owners prize money? I seem to recall that in the 1970s version, the winner was the person with the most money at the end, which makes more sense to me.
    I also agree that there will have to be some house rules to deal with issues not covered in the rules, eg. how to deal with forced sale auctions when only 2 people are playing.
    Overall though a great game, and I can't wait to play.

    Great fun. My brother had this as a kid in the late sixties. Your channel was the first board game channel I watched and yes, you've done it again...my copy of Totopoly is winging it's way to me right now. Boring update......First Race proved that the "Throw exact number to win" can be a killer. The leading horse got within 1D6 of the finish way ahead......and finished last! No fewer than 4 horses landed on the falling over space. Two didn't finish at all and a rank outsider one. Glad I'm not a betting man.

    Dear Box, I had this doubt: if a horse is ordered to move back a length (or two) but the box is occupied, how should it behave? Stands still? Pass sideways? (sorry for a bad English..) thank you very much! Guido

    • @BoxofDelights
      @BoxofDelights  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question. If there is a vacant track outside the spot they moved to, they should take the outside track (i.e. sideways). If all tracks are occupied, they should consider themselves 'baulked' and go back an extra space to the space behind. Hope this answers! best wishes, Ricky

    I have a later version of this game, and in both it seems it doesn’t mention if the betting occurs privately, which I don’t think it can if there is an elected bookmaker as they will know what everyone has bet. Therefore if everyone knows what each other has bet, couldn’t play be strategised by sacrificing one of your horse in order to ensure someone else betting on your horse couldn’t win?

    • @BoxofDelights
      @BoxofDelights  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is why you should bet on your own horse?

  • @MurrRockstroh
    @MurrRockstroh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 12:13 you moved the red horse No. 6, six spaces when it should have been four spaces. The result would have been a Vet Report instead of a Stable Report. Haven't finished watching so not sure if you correct it later.

    Wow, that's the oldest boardgame I've ever seen. My dad had an early 60s edition of Risk, which had been tweaked a bunch by the 80s, and I had a friend that had an Indy 500 game his father had bought in the 70s, but the 1930s beats them all quite badly. And in amazing condition too. Did you get that at a house sale or something? Looks like it got bought and then stored away during the war and forgotten about.
