What I found out, after getting this, is that you have to consider the grind. Percolators don't work well with a fine grind, like you'd use for espresso, and possibly a drip coffeemaker. You want the grounds coarser. There's a French Roast we favor that has a fine grind (it comes whole bean as well, but can't easily find that around here), and I've just stopped using that with the Farberware--probably wouldn't work well with any percolator. There's a coarser ground Italian Roast from Lavazza that works pretty well, but I'm looking into getting an adjustable grinder. We have a very basic one now, with just one setting. I like making it this way. Very simple. There are drawbacks. To pretty much everything, I would guess.
I grew up with a perculator on the stove. Best way to brew a great cup of coffee! I don't think I have ever timed mine, always went by how it smelled lol.
Why does it take more coffee compared to a drip machine? Or am I just not letting it perc long enough? I do get good coffee if I put 25% extra grounds.
@@camplapidary It is strange how automatic drip perculators work. They actually heat the water before going through the grounds. With perculators the water starts flowing over the grounds before it reaches the maxime heat temperature. So it is a slower process of extracting the flavor out of the grounds. Allowing the perculator to operate longer gets that maxime heated water flowing over the grounds. Test it out and see if it makes a difference with less grounds.
I have tried! Nobody wants to watch me pour a cup of weak brew! :D lol. And I don't want to drink it either! I do drink it and I'm glad to have it, but... I mean I've let it go for up to 30 minutes of solid percolating. I have seen that turning up the heat to very high does help a little. I watch the glass knob for color. Over and over I find that it just takes more grounds to get the same flavor as a drip or french press. Just seems weird to me.
@@patriciabock4299 The one thing I really like about the percolator is the aesthetic for the videos. The steam rising, the happy morning sounds of the percolating. Just makes for good video in my opinion. If it costs a bit more in coffee grounds to have it, so be it. Have you ever tried those moka pots, I think they're called?
I just bought my 12 cup Farberware Yosetemi percolator.I graduated myself from the 8 cup one to 12 cup..lol I use 1 heaping tablespoon of coffee to each cup… the coffee is amazing it’s strong like I love.. If you don’t want as strong just don’t use heaping tablespoons but I find a tablespoon a cup..works.. Praying you find your way 😂🙏❤️
Hello! I've been putting 1/2 cup which evidently works out to 8 tablespoons (not heaping). Which is what I put in the drip maker for a 12 cup pot. I guess I need to try your brute force method. Next trip! :D
Very nice percolator. It's good to have multiple coffee makers. Can't go without coffee! Hahaha. I've been adding chaga to my coffee lately. It is super high in antioxidants. It barely alters the taste. Anywho. Thanks for sharing, Marc.
Thanks, Shawn! I did a trip last year I think it was, completely forgot my little tub of grounds. Brought everything else.. Does make the mornings less enjoyable when it's absent. Somehow I survived. :D
Pretty good set up there , sounds like you still like that Louisiana brew , if the spoon dosent stand up in its not strong enough LOL , Had some dirty water they called coffee at a casino in Mississippi a few weeks ago , thanks for sharing my friend
I've never considered my coffee to be particularly strong, but I suppose others might feel differently. I can certainly notice it if I don't use enough grounds. Thanks Wil! Always appreciated. :D
Hi, CCC! They do sell an 8 cup version, which is probably what I should have bought. This 12 cup version is quite large! I got the bigger one in case of any social camping situations. Enough coffee for all! :D
Good morning, Moose! I've used this a few times now. Makes a nice mellow brew(to me). It does take a bit of heat and time to get percolating, really gotta crank it up! Sorry i'm not much of a commentor, please do know that I watch all your videos, one of the thumbs up is always mine! lol. :D
Hello! I have been on this kick of going back to a percolator and found your video. I believe I’m going to buy this one! You have had some time since this video, have you mastered the art yet? And do you like this model? Thx
Hello! I think I have made only about 5 pots of coffee in this percolator so far. I bought it for camping and I just don't go that much. I hope to use it more this coming camping season, it's cold here now. I like the unit. Comparing it to my at home electric drip machine it does take a bit longer to get to temp and start percolating, so the coffee takes a bit longer to make. Using the same amount of grounds as in the drip machine results in fairly weak coffee in the percolator. I have been informed to put extra grounds... I will be trying this. The unit is large at 12 cup size. I wanted large but I wonder if the 8 cup size would be better for me as I'm mostly solo camping, I like to make extra in the morning and have some later in the afternoon. I got the 12 cup to supply others with brew on the odd chance I'm camping with others. If you have any other questions, I'm happy to answer!
That’s a good point with the size! Wife is into this farmhouse style and I told her I was getting this and she thinks it’s crazy! 😂 we camp here in Michigan as well and it seems a better option than dragging the drip model around! Happy camping!
On second thought, you might be asking why the second burner is going while not being used. This stove burns or combusts terribly if I don't have the second burner going. A bad yellow orange flame. So I always use both burners on this stove.
@@camplapidary yes I do! I’ve kind of become the unofficial cook for our fellowship group lol. I’m one of the older gents that gets up when the sun rises, so I make sure coffee is going. Was cheating with instant coffee and boiling water( hey… we’re roughing it right?🤣) Now I’ll be able to make a proper pot of coffee immediately instead of a bucket brigade of boiling water. In all, the coffee had a smoother taste with less acidic aftertaste.
Hi, Captain! I've heard that many Europeans do enjoy instant coffee. I tried a couple of brands when I first started motorcycle camping and it was fine. Super fast and easy to make! :D

For my 9 cup percolator I brew my dark roast coffee for 15-17 minutes and it comes out great!
