It's my humble opinion that the judges really don't care about the time clocks for serving unless it really gets out of hand. Otherwise, they'd call it way more often. It doesn't usually effect the match, the time to start the clock is a very gray area, and the changes with the towels indeed influences the time players need between points. Set the clocks to 30 seconds from when the crowd dies down and then be done with it.

John McEnrone was the most bad tempered and indiscipline player in the Tennis history, on the other hand Rafael Nadal is one of the most disciplined and decorated player in tennis history. What a joke McEnroe talks about Nadal discipline. How dear you man!!!
I've watched Nadal from 2008 and he always takes full time to serve. The clock always goes to zero but seldom does it go past it. And whenever it does a few times he gets a warning or loses a serve. Nothing wrong with that at all!
@@Lifszyc ok. That’s the most naive comment I’ve ever seen. clearly you don’t know much about tennis. Nadal has an excellent serve. He wouldn’t win 22 GS if he had the worst serve on tour. He wouldn’t win anything
I watched the Rafa interview, it wasn't Mc Enroe's comment, iti wasn't Rafa's answer. IT WAS THE VICIOUS JOURNALIST, he even tergiversed Rafa's answer and re-asked him "so you think the rules should change because you sweat a lot"
McEnroe's comment was disingenuous. The clock's purpose is to speed up the game. So that a player does not take excessive time and thus prolong the match. The clock being 25 seconds is arbitrary. Who said 25 seconds is the ideal time factor? Why not 30 seconds. That seems to be more conceptually easy. Rafa is right. Towels used to be handed to the players so they could quickly wipe off and then hand it back to the ball boys. Now the players have to go get the towel, which takes 5 seconds and then walk back which takes five seconds. That is 10 seconds off the clock. Plus wiping off takes 5 seconds. That means a player has 10 seconds to serve. That is tight. I would make the clock 30 seconds, giving them 15 preparation seconds, if they have to go get the towel. The average tennis match is 151 points. Times that by 5 additional seconds would translate to 12.5 more minutes per match. Big deal.
This is exactly why there is a certain appreciation leeway from the umpire. Bouncing the ball on the base line for 30 seconds is not the same than, as you well described, walking to the towel, wiping off, walking back and then serve. The clock is to speed the game but also for the opponent to relax and not wait in tension for an excessive time till the server finally hits the ball.
He still did not really clarify. John didn't mention that Nadal was doing before the clock was put in. That's the reason for it. Then he got the MOST time violation penalties in tennis and now has adjusted. He's not getting away with anything
McEnroe does call Rafa out from time to time. But the journalist suggested it would affect Rafa's legacy because of Rafa's uncalled out time violations...that bit is preposterous.
Have you checked out what McEnroe did during his playing days?? Read a few tennis biographies and interviews to know that McEnroe and Connors were outright bullies and rogues both and off the court. Rafa is like St.Augustus compared to them.
Even though the journalist was chicken livered to try and use McEnroe as the basis for his question, John is lying about not saying these things. I heard him say it numerous times in commentary during the French Open this year. Own your stuff John!
Nadal is trained to serve taking as much as the time allows because his trainer didn't want him to serve too fast risking less control. Also mind you he's not in his 20s anymore, every extra second of rest counts.

McEnroe is so dishonest. He harps on this question constantly. Ignoring that 1-Rafa gets no advantage from taking longer as his serve remains mediocre; and 2-he is the fittest guy out there and does a favour to rivals but letting them catch their breath. If a player gets nervous having to wait for the Nadal ritual before a soft serve, then he has a weak character.

It's pretty commonly known that Nadal and Djokovic take longer to serve than average. They do get warnings and occasionally point penalties though, so doesn't seem special treatment to me.
Its pretty clear actually: the clock is started manually by the umpire after he says the score. So after a long rallye he can take a few extra seconds to tell the score and then start the clock.
At the same time John McEnroe said US government should have allowed Djokovic to play in this tournament, so breaking the law of country is fine! How about that for a fairness??

Will there be a real difference?: RN takes 3 seconds more. That means at 40 points he could serve per set, approximately 120 seconds. In a match to 3 sets he add 360 seconds and to 5 sets, 600 seconds. Of an approximate total in game of 7200 sec in the first case and 16000 sec in the second case. Doing it at all points in all games would have taken 2% more time. Will it be relevant to make controversy? Tabloid media and embittered reporters.
Well put. Plus, if it means Nadal is 2% better I'm all for it. He's a legend. Any viewer who can't stand a 2% longer Nadal match isn't really a tennis fan.
And it is not that the other tennis player needs to do push-ups while waiting, he is also resting. Do a few seconds break his opponents concentration? Well, then they are not much of good tennis players are they?.
When you have 25 seconds, you can serve on 25th or 20th or 9th or 3rd or 2nd or 1st Why umpire would call ? Umpire & RAFA both are doing fine. Neither the Umpire is giving anyone free time nor Rafa is violating any time rule.... Have more precise watch to count
Not just that, if you notice rafa always looks at the time and utilises the full time but seldom goes beyond the 25 second mark. And at the end of the day, if you have a problem with him not receiving time violation question the umpire, why question the man's legacy!?? Funny how McEnroe who was famously known for his on court outbursts have the galls to call out nadal, who's one of the most well behaved players on court, simply because he is too much of a novax fanboy!!!!
And even if he takes some extra time, so what? It’s Rafa Nadal, he has given and continues to give us so much joy. For 16 years, he makes us jump out of our seats. Please give the man the time to shoot some FH DTL, dropshots, smashs, make some tweeners and ombeliebable volleys!!
Yes. These guys (especially Corretja) are trying to say like he was just pulling stuff out of his ass, or that he came with something vague ("heard a friend of a friend say something"). No, those are documented things McEnroe has said. Plenty of quotes to be found online.

This video doesn’t clear McEnroe’s comment about Nadal, but watch till the end and Wilander makes it even worse. WTF is wrong with these people, instead of appreciating the unique player that Nadal is, they come up with such absurd remarks about a “special treatment”. 🤨
Nadal had always abused the serve time rule. His sweat isnt special. Everyone else sweats too and seem to make it back to serve on time. Noise, no noise, sweat or no sweat - make it back. The folks who should be called out are the Umpires who let him do it constantly. The tourney will drag on for hours on end without some sort of serve time. The journalist had a point so he asked Nadal. McEnroe needs to be quiet on air if he doesnt want to be called on his statement and calling a journalist stupid is very telling of himself.
I beg to differ his sweat is exceptional. Some sweat more than others and he is one. Nevertheless Rafa doesn’t appear to be delaying the game, what seems to be happening is some sort of OCD ritual. Please don’t make have to apply to the ADA for an IPP(individual player’s Plan). It could happen.
From my observation the crowds are more intense for Rafa matches, screaming, shouting etc. The towels are further away for a player as intense as Rafa who sweats in accordance with the work he is putting in-Give him a break guys!
I don't give a --- what this is all about. Nadal has led a privileged tennis career,.media & sponsors helping him, and the US Open doing all it can corruptly to help him.
What the fuck are they talking about..every match Rafa plays, the commentators are talking about his waste of time between points..now when someone brought it up, they dont understand anything..hypocrits…if he stopped with half of his tics it wouldnt be a problem for gods sake👊
It's a guide not a rule and up to umpire interpretation and context. The different conditions and towel and sweating, it makes sense. More of a guide of good conduct.
Why does McEnro criticizes Rafa every time he has a chance? Is he envious? Rafa is not only a great player, perhaps the best, nevertheless he Is humble and a perfect human been .
McEnroe always makes negative comments about Rafa. I think that John does not want Rafa to win anymore majors. Either McEnroe is envious of Rafa or pro- Novak….in my humble opinion.
I'll begin by saying that the clock rule is really hard to implement given that there are many factors to take into consideration. Not really a clean cut situation. Maybe the journalist didn't phrase it correctly and in my opinion it could have been that English is not his native language. What I heard him say was that Rafa gets preferential treatment because of who he is.... something that Mc and Wilander clearly think as well and then we get the shot of the average time that says 28 seconds.
maybe they do or don't give Rafa special treatment. Rafa is one of the main reasons why so many people even follow tennis $$$ "Never look a gift horse in the mouth" Vamos Rafa💪👍🤙
Nice try McEnroe, you started this whole thing about Rafa taking too much time and not being penalized. Now you want to backpedal. Still a gutless wonder I see.
He takes too long between serves. I think this is a fact. If anyone in the comment section has ever played tennis can see how this could annoy in a long match. And yes they overlook it because he is Nadal. Which it not right. It would definitely help if we could have the ballboy give the towel to the players. Now how the journalist phrases the question is another issue.
random guy1: i think there's a dent in Nadal's legacy random guy2: oh yeah? What did he do? random guy1: his average time between points is off by 3 seconds now you can sit down for a second and realize how dumb this exchange is 😅
This is a very simple analysis actually: 1- Does Nadal take more time than usual to serve? Yes. 2- Does he get penalized as much as he should for time violations? No. 3- Why? Because he is Rafa Nadal. Him being a legend, a winner, very successful, loved and respected by everyone and a sportsman has nothing to do with any of this. This is about rules and Nadal isn't called out for time violations as much as he should. Either change the rule, remove it altogether or enforce it the way it's supposed to because otherwise it totally is preferential treatment.
Tennis ain't track and field. A couple of seconds doesn't matter. Stop persuading the public that Rafa is getting special treatment. It is all about his mental fortitude and why he keeps on winning. His opponents are just inferior to his skills, so stop blaming him for taking a few seconds of his time.
I’ve watched Johnny Mac since the 80s. And I’ve always thought that he was pretty cool. But I’ve heard him mention Rafa negativity before. I know he’s commented on his rituals. I think John has been semi pissed over Rafa, Roger and team Europe tearing up his World guys in The Laver Cup. To me he wants the players to buddy up and tell him whatever...I don’t know, John’s lost some of his appeal. And I hate that.
Nadal should not get any special treatment, and I think he himself would agree. If he goes over the limit, give him a time violation (which they usually do). It is ridiculous, however, to say he should be ashamed because he uses most of his allotted time. If anything the umpires need to not be hesitant to call it if Nadal takes too long.
John & Mats played in arguably the greatest tennis match of all time - the 1982 Davis Cup quarter finals in St. Louis - clocking in at 6 hours, 22 minutes (9-7, 6-2, 15-17, 3-6, 8-6). McEnroe was victorious & the USA, under the leadership of captain Arthur Ashe, would go on to beat France in the final.

The clock is not intended to penalize players, it's to prevent matches being too long than necessary. Let's put it this way, would you wanna watch the Tennis matches where players can only play 90% of their ability (due to their style of play/sweating too much). I believe an extra 5-10 sec is reasonable after having to play long strenuous points like he does all the time. If you take that away and it means that his game drops 10-15% and that we would not be seeing the great points & matches like he's given us in the past?? I would say that he definitely deserved them because it's not that he's trying to play mind games with the opponents.
The question about fairness where the clock is concerned is legitimate. It would have been more appropriately posed to tennis administration rather than any player.
Don't care - I have given up the US Open because the US Open is now a political shitshow. Novak should be there and now you are trying to cancel McEnroe?! Pound sand! I am done with Tennis. Thanks for giving me back my evenings in late August and early September.
I think the new rules concerning serve time and towel use are great. It prevents the momentum of the game from being lost through constant towel use and ball bouncing. Like with everything else, the umpires should use sound judgement when enforcing the rules. And I think they generally do. For Nadal too. The whole thing is a non-issue.
What the oponent should is just playing more intense, tougher, stronger, and more accurate than Rafa to beat him. Thats all, the rest is just bullshit. Rafa has been giving us all a permanent sample of tireless play and corageous fight for every single ball, from neg to bottom, from corner to corner in rallirs over 15 shots… what the fuck matters 5 or 10 fkexible seconds?. Crowd needs time too to end there applause and slow down the heart beats and emotions caused by Rafa play. 💪💪💪this is just envy of those unable to manage the devotion and gratefulness of tennis world to Rafa Nadal!!!
A few things need to be pointed out. 1. His average time between serves IS 28 seconds. The rule is 25. 2. Barb, Mats, and John are all in agreement that Rafa has been doing this for the last "10 or 15 years" Not much else to say. The facts are there. People want to make excuses because the journalist asked the question in a confrontational way? At the end of the day, the facts are there. Either apply the rules, or change the rules. But don't have a rule and then not apply it to one player, but then apply it to others. That inconsistency is not fair. It seems like favouratism for sure. Maybe they need to go back to 30 seconds, or get the towel brought to the player like it used to be.
It is not a rule, it is more a reference or recommendation, if it were a strict rule to serve a second later it would be penalized, but it is not, what you receive is a warning, and Nadal receives warnings, Anyone who denies it is lying. Nadal's legacy is not going to be ruined for two fucking seconds, and anyone who thinks that those two seconds gives Nadal any advantage is just a fucking envious and a fucking hater. These journalists are only looking for the drama, they are nut pickers who lack objectivity.
@@lorddemon8019 Actually, yes, it is a rule. The problem seems to lie in when the umpire starts the clock. There is an inconsistency in that; sometimes it's from when they call the score, sometimes it's from when the point actually ends. Also, some umpires allow leniency because the service motion has started; you can see this in some matches where you can see the shot clock clearly, and when the player begins their service motion, the clock stops even before they hit the ball. As for whether it gives Nadal and advantage, is probably debatable. Anyone who is rushed may not feel 100% ready. Many players have their own routines and idiosyncrasies. Maybe even call them superstitions. And they like to go through these as a way to prepare and settle the mind, because this is how they have trained themselves. But that isn't the entire story. It's also that OTHER players feel like THEY are not being given the same latitude. In that respect, it has nothing to do with Rafa directly, other than him being a reference point in a completely different match that Rafa is not participating in.
the definition of cheating is when u get a advantage and when Nadal forces his opponents to wait for his set-up/ocd routines we can argue the clock when he serves but not fair it effects the ryhthm of the server when goes through routine to receive opponents serve constantly and they have to wait both ways !!....It is ok once in awhile but constantly every match, tournamnet way too much... Always truth if something is being talked about !!
Both journalists are right for me. If 25 sec is not enough, make it 30 for everyone. You count tonight how many times Nadal violates the rule. Just count
The real problem is Nadal really wastes opponent’s time. If you have ever played tennis even at the junior most level, you’ll know how frustrating it is to wait for the server. No doubt, he’s a legend but he should’ve learned it from Federer who gives so much importance to time. I guess this is a tactic by Nadal to get into opponent’s head.
You can't compare. Federer doesn't get a bead of sweat on him. Meanwhile Nadal is drenched by the second game of the match. It's got nothing to do with tactics, he just needs more time to towel himself down
@@GCbfan I don’t hate Nadal. But you’re talking as if other players don’t sweat at all. No one takes time as much as he takes. John McEnrone was the most bad tempered and indiscipline player in the Tennis history, on the other hand Rafael Nadal is one of the most disciplined and decorated player in tennis history. What a joke McEnroe talks about Nadal discipline. How dear you man!!!
I know. Really upsets me. The creep!
The word is : "dare"!
Ridiculous! Give him the damn towel so he can stay within the rules! If sweat is dripping over your hands and in your eyes, you need a damn towel.
I've watched Nadal from 2008 and he always takes full time to serve. The clock always goes to zero but seldom does it go past it. And whenever it does a few times he gets a warning or loses a serve. Nothing wrong with that at all!
But they start the clock late for him and I've never seen him lose a serve just a warning
@@chrisbrown2211 but it is not Nadal's fault then. It is the umpires that need to not do that. Then Nadal would learn to play within that time limit
@@monaattiah3976 true but he's getting special privileges and everyone knows that. It's like Michael Jordan not getting called for traveling.

Big deal.
Good thoughts.
I think he was saying the umpires start the clock a little later for him than they do for other players at times.
John McEnroe should have been disqualified in half of the games he played because of his nasty behavior. That is special treatment
Perfect answer
McEnroe does call Rafa out from time to time. But the journalist suggested it would affect Rafa's legacy because of Rafa's uncalled out time violations...that bit is preposterous.
Have you checked out what McEnroe did during his playing days?? Read a few tennis biographies and interviews to know that McEnroe and Connors were outright bullies and rogues both and off the court. Rafa is like St.Augustus compared to them.

There’s gonna be a lot of heat that goes down on him if he does. He should leave those comments for the media, not as a commentator
Nadal is trained to serve taking as much as the time allows because his trainer didn't want him to serve too fast risking less control. Also mind you he's not in his 20s anymore, every extra second of rest counts.
But all his pro career he has taken his time beyond the rules. Its cheating plain and simple.

The rules suits who makes them, not the athletes otherwise we wouldn't have this conversation. JM with his comments about Nadal made sure he had a bit of the spot light!
McEnroe is so dishonest. He harps on this question constantly. Ignoring that 1-Rafa gets no advantage from taking longer as his serve remains mediocre; and 2-he is the fittest guy out there and does a favour to rivals but letting them catch their breath.

JM been called out interestingly tries to deflect. awkward for JM who abused the rules and umpires all the time
Will there be a real difference?: RN takes 3 seconds more.
When you have 25 seconds, you can serve on 25th or 20th or 9th or 3rd or 2nd or 1st
Why umpire would call ?
Umpire & RAFA both are doing fine.
Neither the Umpire is giving anyone free time nor Rafa is violating any time rule....
Have more precise watch to count
Not just that, if you notice rafa always looks at the time and utilises the full time but seldom goes beyond the 25 second mark. And at the end of the day, if you have a problem with him not receiving time violation question the umpire, why question the man's legacy!??

Every time I hear McEnroe commentate on a Rafa match it’s literally all he talks about, goes on and on about it. Drives me crazy.
Yes. These guys (especially Corretja) are trying to say like he was just pulling stuff out of his ass, or that he came with something vague ("heard a friend of a friend say something"). No, those are documented things McEnroe has said. Plenty of quotes to be found online.
The ones who always complain are the haters coz there is nothing else to bring up about Rafa’s manners and sportsmanship on the court and off…i notice the people complaining are some of the worst abusers of the rules themselves…think about it
This video doesn’t clear McEnroe’s comment about Nadal, but watch till the end and Wilander makes it even worse.

It's a guide not a rule and up to umpire interpretation and context. The different conditions and towel and sweating, it makes sense.
More of a guide of good conduct.
John feels he needs to do journalism like he played tennis - throw the occasional tantrum and be outlandish.
Why does McEnro criticizes Rafa every time he has a chance? Is he envious? Rafa is not only a great player, perhaps the best, nevertheless he Is humble and a perfect human been .
Nadal wins because he plays better than rest! Everything else is BS
John was the bad boy of the tennis. He continues to pour negativity and stream fights. Shame on John. #Rafa
maybe they do or don't give Rafa special treatment.
HAVE THE BALL BOYS BRING THE TOWELS !!!!!! OR GIVE MORE TIME!!!!!
The towel issue is valid.

@@mazamamina7948 lol its a ritual
This is a very simple analysis actually:
1- Does Nadal take more time than usual to serve?
I think it should be enforced like speed limits.
Well, maybe the secret to being the GOAT, is to take as much time between serves as you can
Hahaha 😝
Exactly,Djokovic takes just as long with countless ball bounces alot of the time
Tennis ain't track and field.
“Game, set and match.. Djokovic” as we see Rafa celebrating his AO win this year
John & Mats played in arguably the greatest tennis match of all time - the 1982 Davis Cup quarter finals in St. Louis - clocking in at 6 hours, 22 minutes (9-7, 6-2, 15-17, 3-6, 8-6). The clock is not intended to penalize players, it's to prevent matches being too long than necessary. Let's put it this way, would you wanna watch the
Tennis matches where players can only play 90% of their ability (due to their style of play/sweating too much).
I'd like to see the tape where McEnroe discusses this.
John McEnroe is a joke.
Mcenroe looks like he is just waiting for some free time in order to play with his band...
A few things need to be pointed out.
1. His average time between serves IS 28 seconds. The rule is 25.
2. Barb, Mats, and John are all in agreement that Rafa has been doing this for the last "10 or 15 years"
Not much else to say.
Hate the serve clock anyway, along with many other modern 'improvements' to the game.
the definition of cheating is when u get a advantage and when Nadal forces his opponents to wait for his set-up/ocd routines we can argue the clock when he serves but not fair it effects the ryhthm of the server when goes through routine to receive opponents serve constantly and they have to wait both ways !!....It is ok once in awhile but constantly every match, tournamnet way too much...
