  • Roger Federer thrilled fans with more than 1500 matches and 20 grand slam titles over 24 years before retiring at age 41 in 2022. The tennis legend granted cameras rare access inside his private world to film the very end of his storied career for the new doc “Federer: Twelve Days.” Roger talks to “Extra’s” Billy Bush about the project, reflecting on his proudest achievement and recalling an emotional moment with rival Rafael Nadal after their last match. Roger also speaks about his wife Mirka’s incredible support and his life now doing carpool duty for their kids. Plus, he reveals he recently played pickleball for the first time! “Federer: Twelve Days” is on Prime Video June 20.

      He was the best of the best for a short while, then he was dethroned. He's great... but not the best of the best. He could have been... but yeah, 40-15. With all that talent, Roger was his own enemy. His mentality was super fragile against Nadal and Djokovic.

    Federer, Nadal and Djokovic have become such graceful speakers while being the top nudged players. Although English was not their first language, they were able to use measured words and effectively communicate with the public. I would say Roger set the example for Rafael and Novak. Thinking back, past tennis champions were either withdrawn or arrogant. They left very little legacy compared to Roger, Rafael and a Novak.

    Alright, Pickleball fans out there. It's official and settled. If there's anyone more qualified to give a well-informed statement on their initial thoughts on pickleball, its Federer. He was quick in stating that it's an easier sport for sure.

    • @supahbeebz
      @supahbeebz 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I can’t imagine anyone arguing against Pickleball being easier than tennis overall, but that’s what makes it so fun!!

    • @adamheath4599
      @adamheath4599 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You do have some merit in what you’re saying but, no matter who it is, anybody’s initial thoughts on a sport would be shallow. You can’t really use what Federer says as gospel, also he’s a life long tennis player, he has an inherent bias towards tennis.
      Also not to mention, Federer has 0 experience being a complete beginner in pickleball. He has a lot of experience being a beginner in tennis, like everyone who starts in tennis and goes to pickleball.

    • @supahbeebz
      @supahbeebz 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@adamheath4599 So I’ve played pickleball for 2 years and tennis for 20 and I can personally attest to the difficulty of both, 1 regular full game of tennis at its shortest (meaning if I won every point up to 2 out of 3 sets of 6 games) is equal to winning 2+ full Pickleball games (‘full’ meaning 12-10/22 point game) at its max. Bringing your A game in tennis means you’re going to be sprinting far more and hitting powerful strokes 90% of the time if you can, tennis also encourages power and speed with only sacrificing control when trying to effectively put in shot placement, pickleball encourages more on balancing between power/control/defensive play but more overall emphasis towards control, I can dink for 2 hours straight if I want to that doesn’t take as much energy as working on my closers in tennis.
      So yes tennis overall is much more taxing on the body/joints, Pickleball at its most competitive only really taxes the body at short bursts due to the size of the court and the pacing of the game which I totally welcome imo. I can get everyone and anyone into pickleball and to come back again for more, I cannot get a single person to come back and play tennis again after trying it once, that alone tells me pickleball is an easy sport to pick up and play vs tennis, which is NOT a bad thing and shouldn’t be taken that way in a negative aspect, but yeah I mean if there’s anyone with utter respect of anyone and everything to make a comment about how easy pickleball is and to take it playfully, it’s Federer
      The only thing that pickleball has over tennis in terms of difficulty are the hands battles which are much more engaging and more entertaining to watch over tennis, I mean sure there’s volleying battles in tennis but those rarely happen if ever, pickleball has those moments nearly half of the game which could draw the appeal for table tennis players to want to hop in on too from the speed of it.

      @adamheath4599 Federer is a tennis player who spent his life playing tennis competitively. He's a legend who many say, plays the game so elegantly, it looks effortless. If someone is that good, yet admits that it's harder than pickleball (in which he lifted a pickleball racket the first time), it's safe to say Pickleball is easier of a sport.
      Let's put it this way. I would be hard pressed to hear anyone who first lifted up a tennis racket say tennis is easy.

    • @adamheath4599
      @adamheath4599 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@MeLikeTennis as I said previously. Federer has never been a beginner in pickleball though so he cannot contextualize the beginner experience for pickleball. You’re trying to use Federer as an expert witness in something that he’s not an expert in. Playing a racket sport either ping pong or tennis will give you incredible feel, and allow you to easily pick up pickleball.
      He has been a beginner in tennis and can contextualize and relate to the struggles of grinding his way to become good at that sport. He has an inherent bias.
      Let’s put it this way, I’ve never met someone who hasn’t played a racket sport a day in their life and said it was easy. Be it, tennis, pickleball, or ping pong.
      I’ll give you a different example. I’ve wrestled for 12-13 years now. I can roll against bjj practitioners and I can find jiu jitsu easy. But that doesn’t mean bjj is easy, I have 12 years of grappling experience to fall back on as opposed to a complete beginner.

    Nadal and Federer should team up on pickleball to play Ben and Collin Johns. I bet Fedal will beat Johns.

    • @TheodenBreathes
      @TheodenBreathes 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      😂 I’d love to watch that matchup too! …but relatively few of fed and nadal’s skills from tennis would apply in high level pickleball doubles. Their baseline drives wouldn’t get them far unless they learn around half a dozen new kinds of shots that are essentially nonexistent in tennis that are necessary to learn for pro-level doubles pickleball. Stuff like roll volleys, resets, topspin drops and just “aggressive dinking” in general would be pretty foreign to them, but you can’t survive against a team like the Johns bros without those shots in your tool belt.
      Obviously, Fedal could be an amazing doubles team in pickleball, but they would still need to commit to learning and refining all these new shots which would probably take about a year for them to reach the highest levels in PB, even with all the other racquet sport skills those two would be starting with.

      @@TheodenBreathes, with some practice behind them, their intelligence in picking up the game, and their super talent, I believe that within a year, they could be the best.

    • @TheodenBreathes
      @TheodenBreathes หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@liberty5069oh for sure they could be some of the best if they were committed to adjusting to fairly different equipment and strategies. There are still plenty of mechanics that overlap between the two sports, and they are incredibly talented athletes, so that wouldn’t be surprising one bit.
      I don’t think the pickleball crowd is arguing that their sport is equally as physically strenuous as tennis. You don’t have to hit the ball as hard as tennis and you don’t have to cover as big of a court.
      That said… is the physical strain of a sport the only determining factor to how much you respect a sport and its players? Is tennis as physically demanding as rugby? Or even soccer? If it’s easier on the body, should tennis be less respected than rugby?
      I think the main source of exasperation that pickleball players feel toward the tennis crowd is the disrespect they get from players of a fellow racquet sport. The regular argument from tennis players doesn’t even make sense as an argument for why pickleball is inferiors. “I came from playing tennis, and picked up a pickleball paddle and it was super easy and I beat all the best players at the park that day, so pickleball is a joke!”
      … and? You came from a very overlapping sport and beat some random rec players? That’s nice I guess. You’ve got a head start, soooo see how far you can go up the ranks before you get your ass handed to you! It might even be fun!
      But if you decide to stick to tennis then go for it and see how far you can go in it!
      Pickleball is a young sport so the skill level of even the best players keeps rising rapidly. It’s not as high as tennis yet, but why would it be? Tennis is a very old, worldwide sport with a massive talent pool. Talent levels can’t really be compared properly until PB gets the chance to catch up.

      @@ThorD4602 yes, i do. have you ever played ? 1) you dont have a big serve any more. that is a real weakness in the game of tennis. no way should the most important shot be one in which you have total control. 2) paddle tennis is much more exacting. once you make a mistake, there is not much you are gonna be able to do about it. in tennis, there are many ways to possibly overcome a weak shot. btw, i also think ping pong may take more skill than either tennis or paddle tennis. i look at the ridiculous shots that are made at the highest level, and i cant even imagine making them. that is not at all true when i watch tennis or paddle tennis.
