This was the best episode in years. Massive props to the EastEnders team for this. It felt like a love letter to the show’s history. These are the kinds of special episodes and experiences the show deserves.

EastEnders did a great job with this episode. For long time viewers it was a great bit of history. I do hope this is a sign of some new quality episodes and storylines to come, we've all been waiting for them.
I just can't get over how well the actor playing Phil has captured his physical and vocal mannerisms. It's as if we actually are watching Steve McFadden in 1979! Rock & Chips could have been a great spin off series, but sadly we lost John Sullivan. If this is turned into a spin off, it will absolutely fly!

The first evening, we all had to sit in silence while the family watched Eastenders! It was another big cliffhanger, featuring Grant & Phil. I looked at your channel btw. Those are lucky animals to be looked after so well, and the cat hair portrait was beautiful!

Turns out Eric is more ruthless than Phil and Grant combined murdering that security guard was quite ruthless considering he found out he had a daughter and he still done it.

The security guard who got shot in this episode made me think, "Where have I seen this actor before?" and then, it struck me. It turns out it was the same actor who played none other than "Mr Steven" from Basil Brush!!!
I once read that something like this actually happened with the Kray twins and their father, He used to beat their Mum until one day (when they were 16) Ronnie hit him and told him if he ever hit his mum again he’d regret it😳.
LOVED this episode. So glad they brought so many members of the Mitchell family into the flashback. And all of this makes me sympathise with Phil even more. So he didn't just have an abusive dad, he had a murderer for a father.
best episode in years. spin-off mini series of this would be amazing, around 10-15 episodes. maybe give every major iconic family on the show it’s own flashback mini series too? this could be a fresh idea for EastEnders.

The way he says "I'll kill you" makes me smile, the actor playing a young Phil, is it me or does he look like a young Steve McFadden? (He actually looks like him and sounds like him)
it made me smile because I was laughing so much its pretty spot on for Phil's character how he threatens to kill his dad and expects him to take him seriously when only minutes before this he chickened out of another killing showing he didn't have it in him. and decades later Phil's still throwing out empty threats but never following through lol.
They’ve invested so many resources into the episode it would make sense for them to carry on with the set, costumes, cast etc even just for a mini series
By far one of my favourite EastEnders episodes of all time the character depth was amazing actors were all spot on and finally getting to see the famous Eric Mitchell was great! ❤️👏👏👏
This storyline is the first time I've been properly excited for new episodes in a long time, hopefully this is a sign that the new director is a good one. For a long time now, I've just been watching Eastenders out of habit. I've enjoyed some of the storylines, but there hasn't been something consistently interesting until this.
He really does look like a younger Phil, well done to Eastenders you did a fantastic job its refreshing to watch something different that you don't expect.
I loved this episode! Loved seeing the origins of the MItchells. The cast were brilliant, especially the guy who played Phil! The moment he beat up his father, I was like "That's Phil Mitchell!". They should do more episodes like this, not just with the Mitchells, but other families too like the Brannings, Cottons, Beales, Butchers etc.
This was so good, and they were all so well casted that it could've been a mini series like rock and chips was. The Mitchell's were always my fave EE family, so this intrigued me loads. I wish Ronnie & Roxy was in it more as i miss them
Tbf I wasn’t too fussed about a flashback episode but after watching it I was really impressed and want more! It was perfectly cast and very well executed. Spinoff series perhaps?
This was a fantastic episode so different for Eastenders but great viewing they could not have cast a better actor to play a young phil Mitchell he does an exceptional job
They casted young Phil Mitchell really well as the actor playing him is like a mini Steve McFadden and I think they did well with casting young billy as he has some traits about him that resembles Perry fenwick
This would be a quality idea for Eastenders as a separate backstory soap. It reminded me of only fools and horses rock and roll without the comedy. Bring back all the old characters and intertwine the stories. They really should do this all the time. Make a whole new series based on classic Eastenders and not just a mini series, I guarantee genuine Eastenders fans would love this. They could bring back Den Watts, Dennis Rickman, Derek Branning, all the tough characters. Have the Krays and the firm too as they were all linked to Eric. Literally everyone past and present that are included in the timeline from 1979 to now. I think it’s a brilliant idea do it Eastenders.
Lost Eastenders from PBS years ago and tried to keep up via TH-cam vids. Lost interest because PBS stopped airing it around the 2005 episodes and only a few from that era remain. Now they are beginning to bring them back! I may need to move to England.
This episode was amazing! I had an idea and maybe Eastenders could do Christmas Eve 1981 where Vincent’s dad Henry was killed by Claudette, as Claudette blamed Eric for it but could be cool to see what happened.. just an idea 😀 Good job Eastenders, loved this episode!

It’s honestly almost spooky how well he channeled Phil. I was honestly in two minds about watching this but the episode surpassed my expectations

Great episode. My only quibbles? Black plastic bin/trash bags in 1979; Peggy's sister-in-law wearing a 1972 miniskirt; VHS vcr machines being stolen.
We had plastic bin liners in the UK in the 1950s. Mary Quant designed the mini skirt in the mid '60s. VHS came to the UK in 1978. Next!
