Hey Chris great vid. I've got the same problem on my 2002 R1150RT with 90,000km on the clock. A few weeks back the clutch lever went spongey real quick and no pressure. It was the slave cylinder. I drilled in a weep hole into the recess/chamber/boss and replaced the slave with a new one. Also replaced the input shaft seal while I was at it. It was a pain trying to get the seal out with a screwdriver. Finally did it and put in new seal with a spark plug socket and was careful to seat it flat. After I got it all back together and took it for a ride but oil was seeping out of the weep hole. I must have screwed up input shaft bearing race cover and/or the oil seal. Do you have any tips for removing the input shaft oil seal at the slave cylinder end? Much appreciated, cheers, Claudio
Hey Chris forgot to add...I've now again pulled the rear end of the bike apart. I've pulled out the clutch slave cylinder and it's got gear oil in the casing leaking from the input shaft seal. I've pulled out the clutch rod and looks as if the gear oil didn't make all the way down into the clutch housing. At the moment, I've still got the drive-train attached to the gearbox. I'm planning on pulling the gearbox and drivetrain out together and then cracking the tranny to replace the input shaft bearing and seal at the clutch slave end. Do I need to detach the swing arm/drive from the gearbox to replace the bearing and seal? I'll also check the clutch hub. thanks, cheers Claudio
Off the topic but close enough: I just bought a R850 R and found that the 1st & 2nd shift form was damaged so I replaced it as ell as the bush and all bearings / seals on both side of the casings. I closed her up and tested all gears okay before and put lever on and tested after. I then put the gearbox back and assembled bike. But the 1st gear scratches and doesn't want to go in properly. The rest of the gears neutral through to 5 are all good. What am I missing...? I am in a small town in Mpumalanga South Africa and BMW isn't exactly around the corner and in SA they see you coming and will rape my wallet,
What do you think about TRW/Lucas clutches, I bought one in Germany and havn't installed it yet.. I got a little rattle going on around the transmission in neutral with the clutch disengaged, when I engage it, the noise disapears. Maybe the pushrod felt? Is the felt available if that is the issue? A little off subject, what size and where can I buy a throttle cable jam nut(threads stripped) for the throttle body cable on a 98 RT? Thanks, I love your videos! Alot of people missed you.. You look healthy!
I'm unaware of those clutches but if it fits I'd try it. Noise will possibly go away when you reassemble everything but being this post was 3 years ago you should be done and getting ready for the next project. Thanks, health is good. Sorry it took so long to reply. Clutch parts available at Beemer boneyard: www.beemerboneyard.com/clutches.html
Rattle in neutral is normal for early oilheads and not a problem. For hard to find parts search the internet. Buy as little as possible from the BMW dealers. You should know better!
Chris, one other question. Noticed that you didn't put Loctite permanent thread locker on the fixed/floating pins/nuts as per the BMW manual. I've read lots of forums and there's a lot of for and against. I'd appreciate your take on this? cheers, Claudio
Chris Harris Thanks - I had cupping on the plates on my R1200R (vazor.com/drop/r1200r/clutch/Photo%20Apr%2028%2c%203%2057%2002%20PM.jpg) and ended up replacing them - was wondering if you were concerned about this reusing pressure plates.

Matt Billenstein I replace plates when there is evidence of excessive wear, improper use/abuse, excessive oil contamination or high mileage. This machine has 33,500 on it and has been beautifully maintained. Thanks.
HI, Chris, I have an output shaft seal leaking on my R1200C and the question is, can I replace this guy by myself without disassembly of the gearbox? Clymer said NO because might be damaged everything in the transmission if put it at a wrong depth, so I need your competent opinion. Thank's in advance
Chris Harris Hi Chris! I really hate to bother you but I need your help.I just replaced the output shaft seal on transmission but it is leaking. Probably because I put it too deep?
The video does not show the placing of the new seal! The interesting part would have been the technique to insert the seal and place it correctly. But there is nothing! Not much use in this way.
Looking GREAT Chris. You lost a lot of weight and look heathy. Thank you for saving me $$$$ over the years and giving me insight on my 1150RT.
Chris , why some bikes the rear wheel spin when they are work in neutral in central Stand ..
Why this happen ??
Thanks👍

How does the shaft come apart from gearbox is the some sort of cir-clip holding it onto splines or is it just a slide on affair

+Claudio P I do not use thread locker on the pivot pin threads.
Thanks for your prompt reply. Sounds good to me. I'll do likewise next time I pull them out, cheers
Hey Chris, what do you use to clean up the pressure plates? Do you check them for flatness? Or do you true them up on lathe?
Sandpaper, No, No.

Of course you can but the transmission will need to come out and I am working on uploading that video soon. 23 12 7 705 086 SHAFT SEAL - 20X32X8

@@ldghHS The seal cannot be pushed too far in.
hello,
Did it smell when it leaks ?
my motorcycle smells sometimes when i give high throttle
Check the alternator belt condition and tension.
it's an R 1200 RT, i changed it in 2017 but it can be this, i will check it and give you a feed back
