Jean-Michel Jarre is always a good listen! 🥰 Some of my other favorite electronic artists/albums from the 70's are:
      * Tangerine Dream: the 1976 album Stratosfear, not a bad cut on the whole album, I guess start with the title cut? Actually all of their 1970's through early 1980's albums are well worth a listen IMHO. Another suggestion might be "Cloud Burst Flight" from the 1979 album Force Majeure.
      * Tim Blake: his 1977 album Crystal Machine, maybe the first cut "Midnight"? It's similar to Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream styles?
      * Michael Hoenig: As an ex-member of Tangerine Dream his 1978 album "Departure from the Northern Wasteland" sounds quite similar. And then his later 1987 album Xcept One is more aggressive and modern sounding, sort of "action/adventure cinematic"? I'd recommend the title cut and especially "Bones On The Beach"!
      * Mark Isham: I'd recommend his 1983 album Vapor Drawings with "On the Threshold of Liberty" being my favorite cut (powerful and passionate!), and his 1985 album Film Music with cut ”Mrs. Soffel”! (beautiful, sad, and passionate!)
      * Amin Bhatia: His 1987 album The Interstellar Suite is one of the best sci-fi/space adventure soundtracks that never had a movie to go with it! He composed and recorded it with minimal equipment, only a couple Roland D50's, a MiniMoog, and a pair of crash cymbals! It's worth listening to the whole thing start to finish so you can form your own "movie" in your mind, but maybe the tracks "The Ship: Main Theme", "Launch: Mission Control And Liftoff / Jumping To The Speed Of Light", and "Intrueder Alert/The Attack" would be a good sampler? (about 13 minutes total?)
      * Larry Fast/Synergy: His first three albums are top essential electronic music for me! And the second album from 1976 called Sequencer is my most favorite of the three with every cut fantastic! My most favorites are "Classical Gas" (which is a cover of the Mason Williams instrumental hit from 1968, might be fun to play the original first and then the Synergy cover for an interesting reaction contrast?), and then my most favorite cut "Sequence 14" which is cinematically dynamic and exciting! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

@@wietzejohanneskrikke1910 That's for the correction! 😎👍I had to look it up to verify and we are both right to a degree! 😅 According to his "MIDI File Track Map" sheet for The Interstellar Suite he used two Roland JX-10 keyboards, a Yamaha TX416 rack, an Oberheim Expander module, a Moog MiniMoog, and a Roland 707 or 727 drum machine. (plus the acoustic crash cymbals ;-)

I'll tell you a few things about Oxygene's A-side. All I know for now
The album begins with some very echoy notes made with the magnificent Eminent 310U electronic organ to which, little by little, other instruments are added. The human voice that makes the main melody is made with the AKS synthesizer and this sound is Jarre's favorite, according to his own words. In the middle part of the song, some low notes made with a Minimoog that was barely used on the album and that is out of the credits, give way to some powerful rising brass programmed in the ARP 2600 synthesizer. Finally we come to the last minutes of the theme, in which, a background noise made with the VCS3 will accompany us until the end of the theme while we resume with some strings of the Eminent 310U the main melody that was previously made by the human voice of the AKS. Meanwhile, some sound effects produced with the VCS3 begin to be heard, which will conclude the song, giving way to the second Part of the Album.
Part 2 links directly to part 1 of the album beginning with a rolling sequence performed on the AKS synthesizer. The sound of the bass seems to have been done with the ARP 2600, while almost all the special effects were done with the VCS 3. The rhythm is handled exclusively by the Korg Mini pop 7 Rhythmi Computer drum machine.
There is no data on what instrument he used to perform the main melody, although the flute sound was surely made with the ARP 2600. The human choirs are, of course, made with the Mellotron. The wind sound is made with the VCS 3 processed by an Electroharmonix Smalltone pedal.
Part 3. The song begins with the farfisa organ that ends in a C minor chord while some low notes of a Minimoog make a melody that will soon be accompanied by some higher notes throughout the song made by the RMI Harmonic synthesizer.. The human voice is made with the AKS synthesizer. The song ends with the sound of some birds. Surely a real recording.
These are the instruments he used on the album.
    ARP 2600 synthesizer
    Eminent 310 organ
    AKS Synthesizer
    VCS3 Synthesizer
    Farfisa Organ
Korg Mini pop 7 Rhythm Computer
    RMI Harmonic Synthesizer
    RMI Keiboard Computer
    Mellotron
Minimoog Monophonic Synthesizer (Excluded from credits for hardly being used)
ARP 2500 Synthesizer (Excluded from the credits and without actual confirmation of its use by Jarre)
Jarre has really always made sonic innovation in all his albums and as you advance in his career, you will see tremendous changes in his way of making music. Equinoxe is like oxygen but on steroids and really memorable melodies. Magnetic fields makes a radical change musically while in his concerts in China, he lets himself be influenced by the music of the Asian giant to compose 5 new musical songs that he would perform live. In zoolook the change is more radical, using the human voice in 25 different languages to create his melodies and thus, Jarre, at 75 years old, continues to this day innovating and creating new worlds never heard before, to the delight of his fans. A hug.

A masterpiece, just like his next album (less "space") titled 'Equinoxe' (1978). Jean-Michel Jarre is the son of Maurice Jarre, a great film music composer... Good genetics! We are waiting for the sequel. Thank you, Brandon.

Outside of classical music (which I was brought up on at home and school) and songs on the radio, this and Equinoxe were my first experiences of other genres when my Dad unexpectedly brought the LPs home one day in the late 70s. And while I have fonud and loved many other genres since, I still love electronica and especially this album.

  • @alexandrucozar3147

I listened this album first time in 1979 and from the beginning I imagined it to be a saga of the creation of the Earth with the primordial ocean (part one), first signs of life developing and diversifying in the water, (part two), reaching high diversity, complexity and power (part three). In the end of part three the ocean and the land starts to separate. This separation is followed by the life moving on the land and continuing to develope. Somewhere in the last two parts we witness the aparition of human beings and the last part sugests a walk on the beach in the modern times. This imaginary construction of mine obviously is related to the first version of the Oxigene album (which had just 6 or seven parts). I didn,t keep up with the subsequently developments of it.

Oxygene managed to achieve platinum record sales here in Australia - pretty sure Oxygene part II is imprinted in the muscle memory of every GenX Aussie alive! It would be interesting to see how much of that success was due to it's use in film, specifically the very tragic Peter Weir film Gallipoli (1981), starring a very young Mel Gibson.

Oxygene Part II is by far my favorite of Jean Michel Jarre's songs that I've heard so far. I always liked it's placement between the two dark parts of 1 and 3. I always vision it as a bubble of brightness in an otherwise dark area. The 1st part of Part 2 uses primarily the laser type of sounds in the background where as the 2nd part uses more of the wind/noise sounds. I'm guessing the choir part at the end was done on the Mellotron, but I'm not sure. After you finish listening to the full album, you need to watch the video of Oxygene Live In Your Living Room where he and 3 other musicians recorded this live in a studio in 2007, all with vintage equipment. If you are into vintage synthesizers, this video will make you drool like crazy.

There is so much so-called electronic, progressive electronic music that there would not be enough space here. Jean Michel Jarre himself, all his albums from "Oxygene" (1976) to "Zoolook" (1984) are "must hear". Later, Tangerine Dream, more or less from the album "Phaedra" to the album "Hyperborea" - these are the "must hear" ones. Vangelis - I think I have to recommend all of his albums. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

  • @scifimonkey3

JMJ and Tangerine Dream were the synth masters of the 70s and 80s. Hopefully you will check out the other parts of Oxygene and also Equinox which was equally great. For Tangerine Dream would recommend the two tracks of their live album ‘Ricochet’ or studio albums ‘Phaedra’, ‘Stratosfear’ and ‘Tangram’.
To get an idea of what was required to make this music search YT for ‘Oxygene live in your living room’ which is a live studio version of the album.

Back in the 70's this did feel rather good - whilst not the first to create whole albums from synths - Jarre did make them accessible enough to break through to the mainstream and his attention to detail and getting the best quality he could at the time is exemplary.
Now - it's all rather quaint and "of its time" - at least to my ears - and I don't think it has aged as well as some people think. But that's not important. It should be enjoyed for what it is and listened with the context of the mid 1970's in mind. It always reminds me of the BBC's "Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy" which I'm sure the main composer for that, Paddy Kingsland, used as an inspiration.
Already by then other practitioners were using synths as part of their soundscapes usually with other electronic and acoustic instruments - sometimes with great results (looking at Mike Oldfield and "Ommadawn" and "Incantations" and Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds") and some perhaps not quite so successfully (looking at Rick Wakeman in particular!) Jarre stuck with just synths for most of his albums - which I always thought was a shame.
For even more rather wacky synth sounds of this era you would probably enjoy the albums of Isao Tomita who synthesised many very famous classical pieces - sacrilege to many classical music listeners but fun and entertaining for most others!

Love Jean-Michel Jarre. My own favourite Albums being this one, ‘Oxygene’.
And the following Album, ‘Equinoxe’. My favourite tracks from each, the iconic ‘Oxygene Pt 4’ and ‘Equinoxe Pt 5’.
I bought the Albums on Vinyl when they were released, such an incredible sound, back then in the 70’s.

Oh yeah. Oxygene, Equinox, and Magnetic Fields are all brilliant records. His newer stuff is more modern electronica flavor and also really good.

Hahaha haven't you listen to Jean Michel Jarre and his album Oxygene before 2024 and it was 3 months ago you started listening to this album? First I had this album on cassette tape in 90/91 and then on CD, but my first JMJ album was on cassette tape which was Waiting For Cousteau which I bought in 1990 and after that Oxygene on cassette tape and years later when I bought a LP/Cassette/CD player I began to buy only JMJ CD albums I could find and came across in these music store, that my hometown had before. I have been JMJ fan since 1987 because his music was played through radios also ☺ The sound you hear at the beginning of Oxygene is played from EMINENT 310 U ☺

Great new artist! Not very familiar with Jean-Michel, but really enjoyed this piece. In parts I and III, I thought I heard a Theremin playing. Some sections of part II almost gave me Alan Parsons vibes. Years ago was a song “Popcorn” originally from 1969 that was created for the Moog synthesizer that I remember a version being released by the band Hot Butter in the ‘70s. I couldn’t remember if Jean-Michel had recorded it as well, and I see in Spotify that there is a 2024 release of “Popcorn”. It’s just kind of a quirky song. Lol

Great! Wasn't sure what you'd think because I don't think you ever commented on him here. Looks like JMJ did record a version of Popcorn under a pseudonym, and it also inspired Oxygene Part 4. I only know of that song because it's used in one of my favorite movies, the quirky "Drowning Mona"! Glad you enjoyed..

    Saluti italiani 🇮🇹😉

Great album, so ahead of its time in 1976 and still sounds futuristic in 2024... that's the hallmark of a timeless recording! When will you pick up part 4 to 6?

Hello Brandon. This music were one of the first travel into serious music listening when I began to love the sound vibes and waves (when I was 12!😉) A particular discovery as you know music realm can be so various and different, this as just the best balance of experimental experience and something more musically melodic going to proud popular spaces. The challenge here I believe were to mimic many instruments of an orchestra without any acoustic instruments, so all soothing evocative. So I understand why he succeeded in that task. Oxygen 4 was the world hit, but part 1 to 3 were the big jump in space, I believe a masterpiece on his own. Very soft, because rythmic (early drum machine) remains very gentle until the middle part of oxygen 2. A trip and travel just before the release of the Sci-fi of Star Wars one year later, but the movie didn't used synthesizers for the musical score of John Williams, only the sound of D2R2 was programmed on an ARP2600 synthesizer, the same you can hear on this album for the melodies and probably the special effects and noises, but I believe those were generated by the British EMS synthi called VCS3, the same instrument you can hear on Pink Floyd Dark side of the Moon, the sequencer "on the run". So Jean Michel Jarre were among the first creating atmospheres and ambient moods, with people like Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze in Germany, also Vangelis who were recording in England in those years. But none of them were so smooth and soothing than him then, not even Kraftwerk who were more rythmic, dance , robotic or industrial instead, you already discovered "Autobahn" 😉. He gave a brand new sound in French instrumental music. As you noticed it is also a great work who deals with the best mixing, approaches used by the DJ's later. You already heard the title from Alan Parsons project "I Robot" who were released the year after who got such a intensive instrumental mixing. Oxygen his maybe his best album ever in time, close to his next Equinoxe. His 2 other works before remain relatively unknown unfortunately but it was much more experimental and difficult to get into. Average listeners weren't mistaken I guess, and sold millions so he fully deserved the Platinum award, he certainly realized a life task and work to create that, not just lucky like loto players.

Sorry for the delay in reading this comment. Smooth and soothing is the best kind of synth music! I'm happy to hear that this excellent music has been with you since you were 12...

I had this album! Totally forgot about it I wonder where it ended up? I used to play it allot. It was during a time when I took a long “break” from pop and rock in favor of jazz and classical. I’m guessing that when I returned to listening to rock and pop, this got forgotten. Parts are definitely “Floydish” for sure. Section 3 for sure
I love the section where it becomes more rhythmic…..Section II I believe.
This is totally in your wheel house, Brandon, right? I’m almost surprised that, with your love of synths, that you haven’t heard this classic album before. It’s something to put on as you go about your chores. A new rabbit hole for you! 😁👋

Awesome, glad you have a history with this album! Yes, so up my alley. I was thinking the same thing yesterday, how I could have never heard of this genius before this channel. Looks like he has a big catalog, so definitely another much welcome and anticipated rabbit hole...speaking of rabbits, Happy Easter! 🤗

The electronic counterpart of Tubular Bells - I love it actually more. You should hear the Concerts en Chine live double LP. Equinoxe was not that successful but a perfect follow-up to Oxygene. A record he never could top even though he has been one of the most influencial musician until now. Son of Maurice who got the Oscar for Laurence of Arabia. JMJ once said, that if he would have been born in the 19th century he would have worked with orchestras, but this is the 20th century and we have computers to compose with.

You're not so far to listen to Rockets. Their instrumental songs are beautiful. Here we have the "maitre". He will open Olympics games in Paris. From 1976 what about electronic music? It's all in there! Look for his live concert in Bratislava STARMUS - BRIDGE FROM THE FUTURE. After 15 min I go to a walk, electronic is not for me, but ... is history! 😍
