i love how Trent has grown into his age, yet he is still Trent - minus the drugs and smashing insruments, but still with the torn jeans and laid back demeanor. The music industry does NOT deserve him.
As a musician myself, I could spend literally days asking Trent questions about how he makes his music, any sound he composes is uniquely-sounding. Though he struggles with the question if he should retire, he needs to choose to do it til he dies, he is one of the few musical geniuses left on this planet.
That's like asking a madman how to scribble on walls like him, or asking a painter how to paint like him, or to ask an illusionist to explain his sleight of hand, or to ask a programmer how he processes code in his head before he writes it. ... You don't. And you can't. Just be yourself and do what you feel, and if what you feel and do and see and hear is enough, others will take notice.
I don't understand why a healthy musician should need to retire. Of course, after a certain age, you probably shouldn't keep beating the shit out of each other on stage, but he'll certainly be able to compose and produce for a few more decades.
iNuchalHead im a music major myself and I can totally say that despite the fact that making music is a wonderful thing, it completely wears one out when it becomes a job where you have to force yourself to be at your best at all times.
Trent and Atticus have made some of the most unnerving yet cathartic ambient music. At this point, I've listening to their soundtracks much much more than the films themselves.
Wise choice of word - Cathartic/Catharsis… love that word! A true movement (much like the Gnostics) the Catholics and current Christian (anti Christ and don’t even know it) hated and persecuted - the Cathars. And for bloody good reason when power mad have a certain plan in mind for the world My God , literally is the Sun , but that’s just one of many single aspects of one big collaborative effort that keeps the heart pumping blood around our bodies. Think it’s by mere coincidence that it rains for the plants and trees ? Of course not , there’s a catharsis with intention , a symbiotic relationship beyond human 3 dimensional senses ….an instruction , doesn’t matter how you imagine it , since the intention is already there for all eyes to see by forces inconceivable to us It’s a very interconnected system , and very much alive and it won’t think twice about wiping our species out if we carry on the rate at which we are. No different to the human body healing wounds or fighting infection, the earth as an entire organised collective system shares the same countermeasures.
I owned a Swarmatron, and in fact sold it to Reznor. ( this was approximately 6 years ago, so either intended as a replacement, backup or he's hoarding them, lol ) Great device, yet very fragile/high maintenance, and seemingly a one trick pony...i discovered other experimental devices which offered a wider palette, hence selling it off.....still an ingenious device
I could literally watch 10 hours of this nonstop, with just 3 tall glasses of water and 5 nutrition bars at my disposal. Literally. If 50 hours of this work were available, I'd watch every second of it.
I'm glad you're one of those that doesn't have this elitist complex about analog being so much better than digital production, and I'm happy for you that you enjoy making tunes, and think highly of them. I've been producing on a serious level for around 8 years, and having the confidence you have would be awesome. But how can you honestly listen to anything Trents done and say he isn't talented? The man is really creative, and honestly composes some great stuff.
Good lord, it looks like a NASA control room in there with all those panels, knobs, buttons and switches. Sure would be fun to tinker around with if I had the slightest clue how to use any of it.
I come back to this video when I need a reminder that it’s ok to get WEIRD with music and experiment in a way that scares you! I truly hope one day I get to score a film the way TR & AR have all these years. They’re two of my biggest musical inspirations.
When i didnt realize that NIN did the sound track at the time, I was feeling like I was playing Quake again. And said SHIT thats NIN!! Loved the movie even more.
I could listen to him talk about gear all day, he's amazing, truly inspirational. Where's your pen & paper kids, you should be taking notes... again with the skull lamps.
yeah in an interview he said that for the past 10 years he's been sober and that would explain mass gain. sobriety has helped him broaden his music too i think
Atticus Ross sat there on the computer with Trent, making big albums, picking up Oscars, went to school with David Cameron and Brother of Princess Dianna.
saw him live in Boise, the opening act was horrid but omg he played so many golden oldies I had a mass melancholy goose bumps meltdown and was hoarse from singing along, can't believe he lost money on that tour doing it himself. Trent is the frigging man!!!!!
As far as I know, Jonny Greenwood uses the Ondes Martenot to create these sort of sounds. You can also hear the Martenot in "How to Disappear Completely" by Radiohead.
Theres alot of SWARMATRON in THE BOOK OF ELI. Atticus Ross used it there if my memory serves me correct. Gotta say, these 2 guys are geniuses, just listen to NIN's new album, and you'll see
Swarmatron is very high on my to-have list, now i've seen it in action. The two brothers at dewanatron.com are the true geniuses in this clip, even though one doesn't see them. They made a Dual Primate Console as well, and the text on that page is hilarious. Anyway. Back to work. In the Shoarmatron... CIAO & thx4UL
Maynard should have learned something from him in Tapeworm. All I hear him do is experimenting with megaphones in his concerts while Trent has all kinds of gear both on the studio (like the swarmatron) and on concert.
+fenryx0 I don't know, man, have you heard his newest album or see him in concert? They're very different, and I actually find myself listening to Money Shot more than Hesitation Marks lately.
alarikmarcus I really don't see how much "different" they are. The tension 2013 tour was incredible. And I actually think that both money shot and hesitation marks were awful but that's because they sounded like they were made on a pc rather than by a full band. I know it may not be that way but both albums definitely sounded that way.
Estudie en el ingles como el 85 cuando venia recien de nueva York. Me gustó tu respuesta y luego vi que eras de Rancagua. Hay un profe del UNIACC que tab es compositor y quien tab habla de Michel chion quien viene de ahí.
It makes me wonder if the same instrument was used there. If not the sounds are definitely first cousins. As, musically, are Jonny Greenwood and Trent Reznor :P
Can't believe we get to see an inner look at this genius's studio and the majority of you would rather comment on his weight. Ah, the decline of civilization. I'll bet most of you fans don't look quite as sharp as you did the first time you heard his tunes either, but everyone's a critic, eh?
Raul Cortes-Monroy The Swarmatron wasn't made until recently. I could see why you would think so, though. It does sound very much like the instrumentation on that song.
Trent never jokes, so his wry little one liners always get a good chuckle and warm my heart.
i love how Trent has grown into his age, yet he is still Trent - minus the drugs and smashing insruments, but still with the torn jeans and laid back demeanor. The music industry does NOT deserve him.

I second that man!
*****
Have been for 4 years so far, still going strong! lol

A synth soundtrack is perfect for an android like Zuckerberg.
Trent Reznor knew it all along.
You win the comments section
Yes!! Omg yes...its Extremely fitting ..
Dad can I have the keys to the synthesizer tonight?
Sorry son, its just too dangerous.
Im wiring a ignition power switch to my keyboard. Thats a great idea. Thanks for the project.
I was just wondering why the damn thing has a key. LOL
Yes son, Only use the VST Plugin version cause you're too younger to play this on hardware. 😂🤣🤣🤣
Trent and Atticus have made some of the most unnerving yet cathartic ambient music. At this point, I've listening to their soundtracks much much more than the films themselves.

this movie was just perfect with music, editing, filming, script everything
EVERYTHING
It's an absolute masterpiece.
I loved the part where Atticus talked
lol
It is cool how the music even sounds like a horror movie. It's so experimental and amazing

And an academy award, not to forget! This guy is a genius, thats what he is!
Amazing man.
he has grown quite well over the years
I love that it needs a key to operate. :)
Oh! He almost cracked a smile. ;) Love ya Trent.
Film video and society one of my favorite classes. This man should have been in that textbook! Genius! @treznor Legend
Trent is a God and a fucking genius
wow the energy in that tiny little room! can you feel it?
Everything is alive
I come back to this video when I need a reminder that it’s ok to get WEIRD with music and experiment in a way that scares you! I truly hope one day I get to score a film the way TR & AR have all these years. They’re two of my biggest musical inspirations.
Sounds a bit like an orchestra doing a cluster, only electronic and by just one person, being almost fully in control. That's really great!
Dude..Trent Reznor IS a math equation...
This movie is an example of everyone involved operating at their peak. The end result is incredible.
Absolutely stunning setup!, just a wall of epic audio gear!
Love NIN!
This dude can make a hit out of literally fucking anything.
Thanks for the info! I'm glad his music is still "him." If HTDA is any indication I'd say sobriety has been very kind to him.
When i didnt realize that NIN did the sound track at the time, I was feeling like I was playing Quake again. And said SHIT thats NIN!! Loved the movie even more.
0:41 sounds like the beginning of "There Will Be Blood"..
Literally thought the same thing.
Glad im not the only one
I think if those 2 would do the soundtrack for a thriller/horror movie, people would either turn into stone from fear or leave the theater screaming.
well...
As a recording engineer, it would be an honor to be there recording his music for hours and hours.
This thing has it's own key!!! Must be good.
Looking through the couple videos that there are of a Swarmatron demo it's like Trent's the only one that knows how to use it.
The knowledge and depth is awe inspiring.
Mr Reznor is a genius. No more need be said.
I could listen to him talk about gear all day, he's amazing, truly inspirational. Where's your pen & paper kids, you should be taking notes... again with the skull lamps.
oraganic perfectly imperfect!
OMG! I LISTEN, AND MR. REZNOR, AND I HAVE ALWAYS HEARD A "BEE HIVE" ....KEEP.UP THE AWESOME MUSIC! 😉
nice tool for atmospheric sounds ...i raise my hat for this work
"If you open this one you'll find a spider web of cables soldering and MADNESS !!! "
Watching Trent work is like watching a Michelangelo working on his next painting
i would pay mad cash just to watch him and atticus in the studio for one day.
yeah in an interview he said that for the past 10 years he's been sober and that would explain mass gain. sobriety has helped him broaden his music too i think
I so want a ballin ass studio like this one...all that analog equipment! So awwwwwe!
really intense! guys a genius!
Atticus Ross sat there on the computer with Trent, making big albums, picking up Oscars, went to school with David Cameron and Brother of Princess Dianna.
i hope i turn out someone like him in the next 30 years
Absolutely Incredible!!!!!
saw him live in Boise, the opening act was horrid but omg he played so many golden oldies I had a mass melancholy goose bumps meltdown and was hoarse from singing along, can't believe he lost money on that tour doing it himself. Trent is the frigging man!!!!!
Thank You Trent for Your Music.
As far as I know, Jonny Greenwood uses the Ondes Martenot to create these sort of sounds. You can also hear the Martenot in "How to Disappear Completely" by Radiohead.
Trent is the Dr Frankenstein of music. Truly amazing.
That is the sound of nightmares.. Can you imagine that constant sound in your head all day long?
Love to see things like this
I keep hearing The Shinning
"The Shinning" like the Simpsons Episode? :)
I love this man. Analog!
Oh my god oh my god oh my god. That's brilliant.
That would probably be just about the coolest thing ever.
Why can't this be real?
Great upload. Cheers
Theres alot of SWARMATRON in THE BOOK OF ELI. Atticus Ross used it there if my memory serves me correct. Gotta say, these 2 guys are geniuses, just listen to NIN's new album, and you'll see
Most impressive soundtrack for a long time
I wanted a VST for this but just ended up making the sounds in harmor cuz it has all the functionality to do it. I love the sound of this
two years late, but you were able to do this in Harmor? never found it to sound that great
Fun fact - this synth was heavily used on Kate Tempest - Everybody Down. Dan Carey did wonders with it!
Trent, thank You for visit Poland, Malta festival.
CIAO & thx4UL
indeed the music industry doesn't have Trent.
Maynard should have learned something from him in Tapeworm. All I hear him do is experimenting with megaphones in his concerts while Trent has all kinds of gear both on the studio (like the swarmatron) and on concert.

Four years on and this is still a stupid comment.
don't know why but it reminds me of The Shining movie.
possibly because the shining used krystof penderecki's work, which is mostly based on unisons and eery slow glissando, much like the swarmatron.
Buena rancaguino
He is really building an army of robots in that lab.
I don't know why this was in my reccomended, but hey. I'm not complaining
That fucking synth. That shits based on one of the original synths that had a similar design with the ribbon. Thats so fuckin cool.
Dad can I have the keys to the synthesizer?
absolutely agree with you 100%
I wonder if your putting music into a movie does that mean they send you a copy and watch it to put music into the film?
Exactly
I have so many questions
@@CarolynDestruction so do I
genious working
@franklottar I understand you COMPLETELY here, man. But I'm glad that when I DO need his music, it's there! :-)
In the immortal words of bruce campbell " well hello mr. fancy pants "
he's so perfect
I love their stuff. It’s a very sweet beastie. Full of wire and goodness. A little unruly but in a good way. Peace 👍🏻👽✌🏻🎶Christo
this movie did not deserve this great soundtrack
What's wrong with it you didn't like?
It makes me wonder if the same instrument was used there. If not the sounds are definitely first cousins. As, musically, are Jonny Greenwood and Trent Reznor :P
TRENT!!! awesome.
@Zorsha Agreed and he knew that, so he cut of his label and sold his music by himself. Love this man.
I love him.
0:40 There will be blood; first scene.
wow..i was dumb. the info is in the title and at the beginning of the video. thanks :)
basically, as he says in 1:53, it plays a cluster of notes, and when he turns that knob at 0:40 the interval between the notes gets bigger
The imagination some people have is truly remarkable.
Can't believe we get to see an inner look at this genius's studio and the majority of you would rather comment on his weight. Ah, the decline of civilization. I'll bet most of you fans don't look quite as sharp as you did the first time you heard his tunes either, but everyone's a critic, eh?
@OddPoPMusic You can still do it. Its never too late to give it shot.
omg I NEED that instrument! :D
Reznor should make the soundtrack for a System Shock 3 using this machine. :D
You get a very similar effect by playing with the coarse/fine pitch control on a standard analog synth oscillator
The skull lamp is perfect
There production made this movie imo.
Well said!!!
He's SO bad in fact, that he won the Golden Globe award for this!
Trent Reznor is more jacked than I remember...
I love that it needs a key.
He used the swarmatron for the Leaving Hope track didn't he?
Raul Cortes-Monroy The Swarmatron wasn't made until recently. I could see why you would think so, though. It does sound very much like the instrumentation on that song.
@facecheek
Brian Dewan. Inventor of the Dewanatron, the Swarmatron and several of other weird crazy organic sounding instruments.
