Moved up from NYC because of “safety” the Bannermann’s operated an army navy store that purchased surplus firearms (cannons and muskets and more) after the American civil war. They even outfitted the NY militia during the Spanish-American War. They use to put out a 300 page catalog that people could order cannons and early machine guns and other arms directly to their house. He was still selling mil surplus guns to civilians after World War I. But alas Bannerman's sales of military weapons to civilians declined during the early 20th century as a result of state and federal legislation. By the 1920’s he was out of business.

If I recall correctly a current case already being argued is the constitutionality of banning a person convicted of a felony from owning firearms so this would be an interesting addition. The "NFA" or "GCA" as we all know are unconstitutional however yet to be over ruled. Personally I hope we all live long enough to see the courts rule in favor of the citizens not the restriction or infringement of our rights.
