The donair was invented in Halifax in 1973 when the first King of Donairs opened up in Halifax.
The owner was first going to open up a Greek gyro or kebab type place but realized the province would probably not take to lamb and yogurt based tzatziki sauce.
So he opened up a shop that served more of a Turkish dish called a doner and it is beef. Each country has a different name for it.
But the Halifax "donair" is sort of its own original creation as it uses different herbs and spices.
And all the donair shops in Halifax seem to share the same recipe or use the same distributors of meat because as soon as you get out of the city limits then it is not a Donair to me. Then it's just spicy meet.
A donair and a gyro is totally different in the end. No comparison. I grew up on Donairs next to the original King Of Donairs. They are awesome.
